It pretty much worked for BP. The only mistake I made there was getting my initial shares of it too soon after the blast. That's why I'm thinking I wait a couple/few months on the EXC play. Only thing I'm leary of at this point though is where they have their HQ. Are they based out of Chicago or Illinois somewhere? Tax rates might get a little crazy?

Actually, they are in Naperville, Ill just a few minutes from my house. I don't know for sure obviously, but I bought in at just over $39 in a pretty weak market. I wouldn't thing they price would touch that. Seem like when we see general market weakness, we see strength in high dividend stocks like EXC and T. But then again, we are in uncharted territory....

Exc has a large nuke exposure, hence may be weaker than before. That is exactly the type of thinking I'm hoping more people have between now and the end of May. Then after people have had an opportunity to think things over a bit and they realize that the odds of a 9.0 earthquake followed by a Tsunami in Naperville aren't as high as they are in Japan, they will decide that EXC isn't as bad as they once thought.

I think you'll see a lot of buying in EXC over the next week. I'm seeing more and more fund managers on the financial channels singling out EXC as a buy.

Current % of holdings in my brokerage and IRA: KO 12% PM 12% KFT 11% HNZ 10% MCD 6% WMT 6% DD 6% PFE 5% JNJ 5% DUK 5% BP 5% EXC 4% VZ 3% FSC 3% PG 2% NMM 2% Oth 3% Others include Cash, HI, WHX, PTY, PMX, FTR.
It may look like I've got a bit much in the top 4, but I've had a hard time finding quality companies that I want to invest in that typically pay their dividends in Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct. Any help finding more there would certainly be appreciated. 3-4% yield is all I'm 'needing'. A big part of my strategy is trying to even out the income we'll be earning each month once we retire. I didn't list our Treasury holdings in this, but I won't be buying any shares in stocks paying out the second month of a quarter because out Treasury interest will make up for that cash flow shortfall.

Doing a little checking on upcoming ExDiv & pay dates.
Noticed KO dividend up from .44 to .47. That's a nice 6.8% pop. WMT dividend up from .3025 to .365. That's a nice 20% pop.

I tend not to favor dividend stocks based solely on history of dividend growth. These usually do great on the % increase scale but less on the real current payout scale.
I favor large current dividends - with price growth is great, but that has a downside as well. For example, LINE on peoples' lists. Yes, the divvy rate is still very good, but it's very good price appreciation over the last coupla years has dropped the current yield number. At some point, these formerly high distributions become lower in percentage when the price grows. When that happens, it makes sense to compare the current % distribution to alternatives. After all, it's all about your current % distribution - sometimes you should sell out something with price appreciation to invest in something else with better current % distribution, ie deal with today's payout, not yesterday's.
You can always assign some other portion of your portfolio to growth, while keeping others focused on payout.

I've noticed that when a stocks price declines that the dividend usually goes up. This gives some protection in a falling market. Yes there are more profitable ways to play the market but as a buy and hold strategy this is about as good as it gets in my opinion. No sleazy wall streeters siphoning off your earnings at the back end. The problem is there are very few dividend stocks left as a percentage of the market.

Thinking about WHX - Maybe I will make my move tommorrow. Walmart? - As a retailer I just can't bring myself to invest in a company that I hate. Be careful with that WHX. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have bought that one. I still don't really understand these energy/oil trusts. Important for you to understand they have a limited life. I expect this stock to get to zero towards the end of it's life. I don't remember how many more years' worth of oil it has to pump. If I ever see it hit $23 again (doubtful IMO) I'm dumping it. I won't ever shop at Walmart because I hate everything they represent. That doesn't preclude me from understanding there are too many in this country that don't feel the same way and will continue to shop there until it's the only retailer left in the country.

Thanks Driftr- I'll be careful with WHX - That does explain their current 16.57% Yield! Business Summary www.whiting.com Whiting USA Trust I (the Trust) is a trust formed by Whiting Petroleum Corporation (Whiting). The Trust was formed to acquire and hold a term net profits interest (NPI) for the benefit of the Trust unitholders pursuant to a conveyance to the Trust from Whiting Oil and Gas. The term NPI is an interest in underlying oil and natural gas properties located in the Rocky Mountains, Mid-Continent, Permian Basin and Gulf Coast regions (the underlying properties). The NPI is the only asset of the Trust. The NPI entitles the Trust to receive 90% of the net proceeds from the sale of production from the underlying properties. As of December 31, 2009, on an accrual basis 2.77 million barrels of oil equivalent of the Trust's total 8.20 million barrels of oil equivalent have been produced and sold and 0.02 million barrels of oil equivalent have been sold in divestitures.

Anyone have any thoughts on BMY (Bristol-Myers Squibb) ? Current 5.08% Yield I don't like their payout date being in the 2nd month of a quarter because that's the month my Treasury Direct already pays. I've also already got enough exposure to helthcare/drug stocks with PFE and JNJ. Other than that, nice yield.

I have JNJ but both JNJ & CL are good solid picks.
Both make products that people want even when the economy is down.

I'd take Cramers advice and lump it in with the advice the tarot card reader would give you at the local fair. Actually, the reader probably has less reason to pump a particular stock because she's not front running you in her foundation.

Driftr,
Check out CHKM. I picked it up two weeks ago. It's had a $2 run since to about $28.70, but at these levels still has a 4.75% yield. At my cost it has over 5%. Natural gas pipeline and transport.

Funny thing, Every time I tried to look up "CKHM" my Schwab account would tell me "not found" and log me out of my account. Maybe it's some "Secret" stock I'm not suppose to be aware of!
