Let's see, who did the best job for their political philosophy in December? The President, or the Republicans? He gave the Republicans the tax cut extension. In return, the Republicans gave in to Don't ask don't tell The Start Treaty And everything else the President wanted from Congress. All in one month. Tell me, who won the political wars?
The President imoho.

The "Start Treaty"? What is that? Are you referring to that retarded legislation that would pay college tuition for illegals and leave good real Americans behind? I thought that insane idea was out the window.

Burns, you may be thinking about the Dream Act, not the Start Treaty.

And the dream act did not want to PAY tuition ... just wanted to allow children who had been brought here illegally, and grew up here, the chance to gain citizenship through academic or service paths...

Yes of course, it was the dream act I was thinking of. Start was the missile reduction treaty, a good idea on paper. Hopefully it will facilitate real arms reduction or at least some understanding of the concept between the US and Russia.
Concerning the dream act, wasn't the government to pay their tuition? What is the point if they didn't? Maybe they think they'll recoup the money when the illegal gets a job out of it. Yeah, the check's in the mail.

Considering that Republicans were still in the minority in December, it's pretty good that they got anything passed IMO.

Thank you Mr. billisonboard. However, I clicked on your link and got trapped into a spiral of posts on the exact thread we are on. Kind of threw me but I was successful in getting out. Regards.

Link is giving credit to oped for her posting. I felt it was necessary to repost it since it was between your first posting that the Dream Act would pay tuition and your second posting that it would pay tuition. I see the problem Mr. billisonboard. I had the federal dream act confused with the California dream act which does give the illegal alien students access to state grants. Keep up the good fight though.

"Keep up the good fight though." Thanks. You also. This is why we are here. "...California dream act which does give the illegal alien students access to state grants." I do support the Dream Act but you know what, I like the idea that they NOT have access to programs to help pay for their schooling. Make them work that much harder if they really want the carrot at the end. Or take the military service route if they can't come up with the funds for college. I "paid" up front for my college by serving and it did me a world of good.

Congratulations Mr. billisonboard, good hard work on your part. I suppose the dream act without any financial or other support would not cause too much harm however with today's climate on illegal immigration (save for California) it seems anything that even remotely encourages it will be a tough sell.

I just feel for the human being that was brought here as a child, who has spend a large percentage of their life here, did the work to graduate from high school, and wants to be a productive member of American society. Just a show of my "weakness" that I see real live breathing human beings instead of "illegal immigrant".

I guess the difference is whether you lump them all in together, or recognize them as individuals, with individual circumstances...

...bills and oped... all Steelers's fans, while having individual background stories and reasons for buying a ticket to watch them play, are still Steelers fans... let me tell you about one them: back in the 70s when I rooted for the prettiest helmet teams, I... ...well, here I'll presume that you were just asking...

"...well, here I'll presume that you were just asking..."
You presume incorrectly. You say you see actual human beings so tell a story of a child brought to this country illegally by adults who has successfully completed a high school education, who has committed no crime since being brought here illegally by others, and is wishing be a citizen of this nation that they have known as home for a good percentage of their time on this planet.

If four steelers fans go out to grab a bottle of vodka, and three of them decide to knock over the licquor store... should the forth be treated exactly the same, just because he got taken along for the ride?... Yes, he might be complicit to a degree... and if he doesn't turn in the others/ is in some way compelled to participate in the act, he may be asked to jump through certain hoops/complete certain deeds before he is absolved... but he isn't treated exactly the same way... just cause they are all steelers fans... right?

Which is why he isn't given automatic citizenship... he has to jump through hoops to get it... and show his 'reform' if you will... and prove his worth... as the dream act would have required...
The story will change how we treat them... and whether we allow them the opportunity to gain legal status...

...their story will not change their status... and I'll oppose our legislating/creating any more threads for the proverbial red carpet... ...but this is a thread about POTUS in Dec10, so let's re-rail it...

To me, they are here, they are not going anywhere but here..it wasn't they who did something illegal , it was their parents..unless "the sins of the father should also be put on their children"...they speak the language, they are for all appearances Americans..I don't believe they are all Marching out there with flags of other countrys , so if they go to college{like all are going to qualify} and get advanced education tha's bad?..or to serve in our military...all that was bad? Doesn't compute to me. Maybe I missed something.

And too bad we have members here who will not heed his warning to stop all the hate speech and political cheap shots.....it was one of the finest presidential speeches I have ever heard in my lifetime and a I applaud Obama for a job well done TUCSON, Ariz. — President Obama exhorted Americans to refrain from partisan bickering and urged the country to embrace the idealistic vision of democracy held by 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, the youngest Arizona shooting victim and an aspiring politician who is set to be buried Thursday in the first of half-a-dozen funerals.
Speaking to an arena audience of about 14,000 and even more in a nearby football stadium and at homes across the country, Obama drew on themes of unity, patriotism and heroism as he tried to help the nation make sense of a tragedy that unfolded as citizens were exercising their most basic of rights, meeting with their congresswoman.
Christina and five others were killed and 13 injured Saturday in a shooting rampage as a crowd waited to meet Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head and left gravely wounded. Obama revealed during his speech that she had opened her eyes for the first time shortly after he visited her bedside.
Obama focused on memories of the victims and the heroism of those who sprang to their aid after the gunfire. He steered clear of the political tit-for-tat that has consumed much of the dialogue since the massacre while acknowledging the "sharp polarization" that has gripped the countrywww.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20110112/US.Congresswoman.Shot.Memorial/

...my problem with these comments is in the reference to "hate speech," which can be redefined as we go... and down the slippery slope we go...
