Ok, I need to toot my own horn.
I ran my first 5k of the season over this weekend and I ran a personal best of 23:23, even though it was windy, hilly and I have only been training on a treadmill.
A friend wants me to run a half marathon in the fall, but I am not sure if I am up for it. Anyone run one? Are they fun?

for you! I'm hoping to get to a 5k this year. if not an actual race, at least being able to run the distance without slowing to walk. I'm *so* not a runner! keep up the great work!

Congrats on your 5K! You might want to try a 10K next, that's how I started. I've never been a runner, but I challenged myself to a half marathon last year, and the training was a real grind. I followed this 12 week training program: running.about.com/od/racetraining/a/basichalf.htmI trained on a treadmill as well and hated it, but my schedule didn't allow for running outside during daytime (and I hated running in the dark). One positive note was that I found training on the treadmill helped me to run faster on asphalt. Finishing the half marathon in under two hours felt like an amazing achievement, but I haven't worn my running shoes since.

congrats, Archie! I've been trying to run at least one 5k a month. I couldn't find one for April (other than the one I volunteer at, so I can't run it), so I ran two this month. At one of them I was second in my age group! That's the first time I ever placed And...I'm actually running faster times now than I did 10 years ago, thanks to a really good running partner.

congratulations Arch, Karma! my first road race was a half marathon, I have done 3 ,they were a lot of fun because my goal was to finish in a decent time under 2 hours, did not have to win, I don't run races anymore, no one to train with and I need the motivation to get out there. all my cardio is on the elliptical machine now

Wouldn't your first one always be your personal best? At least until you run again? Congrats Arch! That is really awesome and I feel happy for you.
