Have you ever used one? Do you think they are worth the cost? What are your general thoughts? I've never used one and I was curious.

No. They are pretty much a sham. It's like paying someone to flush your toilet for you. Most of them know next to nothing about nutrition or physiology. You'll know more than they do with 15 minutes of reading.

Well, I wouldn't say they are worthless. The guy who lives across the street from me is a personal trainer. He is always outside doing yard work from April until October in nothing but a pair of shorts. In my opinion, he beautifies the neighborhood. I'd say there is some value in that!

Trust me...I'm getting a bargain! I thought about hiring him for real, but I don't think I can work out while I'm drooling all over myself. Too slippery.

I paid for 6 sessions with a trainer when I first joined my gym. It was helpful to learn how to use the machines and what number to put the chair on and the leg part, etc, etc. I didn't feel like everyone was staring at an idiot trying to figure out the machine when I worked out on my own.
I wouldn't pay for a trainer long term though - well I would if I became a gabillionaire

famcfo - you have a great deal there. Our neighbor is always outside doing yard work in small shorts and no t-shirt, and that dude is no personal trainer. One day my husband said "Do you think if I bought him a t-shirt he would wear it?" The cigarette hanging out of his mouth is just the stereotypical icing on the disgusting cake.

Thanks for the input MM & rebecca. LOL Thyme! That doesn't sound pretty. I do know how lucky I am. My husband thinks the trainer "likes" me and I said it's only fair because the little old lady who walks the neighborhood "likes" him.

Sounds like a great trade off Fam!! (hot guy and little old lady) When I did go to the gym years ago with a friend of mine, she paid for a trainer for both of us as she insisted she needed him to help her, and needed a work out partner to keep her motivated. I had a hard time with the trainer as our sessions were at the same time and when he would instruct her to do a certain exercise and then turn to me, she would wander off and do something totally random compared to what he wanted her to do. She wasn't serious about exercising, but wanted to make it look like she was. Since our sessions were together, I got almost nothing out of it as he was constantly trying to re-direct her. She never would do the basic cardio that he suggested - she might walk for 10 minutes, but not the 30 minutes he was suggesting she needed. Thankfully, now that I'm resigned with the same gym, they've changed their program a little. All new members get 5 30 minute sessions with the trainer as part of their membership. The first session (usually your first day) is to see exactly where you are on the charts, BP, heart rate, measurements, etc. The second session (usually within the first week) is to go over all the the machines the trainer is recommending you start with. The third session is a follow up with either the trainer for any questions, new techniques, additional help, etc or a session with a Dietitian about eating healthy. I can't remember what the 4th and 5th sessions are for.

My little brother worked out with one in Phoenix for a bit when he first left home. The transformation in him was pretty impressive. The trainer seemed to know his stuff though. He had him doing everything from sprint and interval running, to boxing, to free weights, and polymetrics. The gym he was going to had a dietician on staff as well who would put together a tailored meal plan for each person too. I'm not sure how good she was. My brother said she basically told him to eat as much whole raw foods as possible, avoid fats and simple carbs, and to be eating constantly. It all seemed pretty common sense.

Do you know how much sodium is in Rice-A-Roni? Besides, it's all made with processed bleached rice. I might as well sprinkle salt on some cardboard and eat that.
