I don't think I've ever felt that way. Just the clutching agony of my lungs exploding and the feeling of near heart failure. I keep trying because everyone says the runner's high is out there - but I have never had the joy.

It varies for me. When I'm having a good day I will reach the zone pretty quickly. Other times when I've had a tough day or I'm feeling lethargic, it takes the duration my entire workout for me to feel good again. This is why I tell people that if I were to win the lottery, my daily routine would start with sleeping in, eating a good brunch, and then hitting the gym.

I used to run 3.5 miles worth of various distance sprints three days a week and jog 3-5 miles three days a week, with one day a week of rest. I never got the endorphin rush I've head other people talk about, or if I did it never did much for me. There was a certain enjoyment in really pushing yourself to get lower times on the sprints, or to keep going for another lap or block on the jog, but physically it never felt good. Running is hard, it hurts, it takes everything out of me. It was never really enjoyable.

Sadly when I'm hiking I usually get into the zone after like, half the day is over. I'm just starting to run, so I don't know on that one yet. I swear I have the worst cardio ever even though I really try to build up endurance!

Walking and biking, gardening, cleaning the house - I can go for a long time. Working out - I feel awful and just quit. I think I have to be doing something so I stay occupied or have another goal other than "working out".

Keep it up, Cael! It's totally worth it! You'll get there. Thanks! I hope so! Boot camp is already getting easier by the day (done with week 4 now!), so I think tomorrow I may hit the gym & try a run.

I used to but now when I try to push past the gasping for air stage I wind up exhausted barely able to stand up in the shower. I guess I shouldn't be so hard on myself, I did flunk a breathing study at doctor's office and the typical inhalers for asthma don't seem to help.

I'd be happy if I just ever had some good days anymore. Cardiologist said it'd be like this but I am not patient. It appears I don't have asthma but something is messing up my breathing. I am improved from when January/February when I couldn't sleep when I had to sleep propped up and still woke up during the night. I just want a diagnosis and a treatment plan you know? Cuz this just isn't acceptable to me.

I think I've been in this zone a few times, and that is when I have a song that I am not sick of and I don't have a cramp and I don't have to pee, etc.
I swear, everytime I start jogging I have to pee!! I either stop and do it and feel unmotivated to continue, or I hold it and think about it for the duration of the jog and I am too distracted to feel a high. Do I ramble on and on or what?

Followup with allergy/asthma doctor and repeat breathing study on 4/20. And yes, the irony of going to the breathing doctor on that date is not lost on me

wvugurl26, I'm sorry to hear about your breathing problems. Good luck with the doctor, and I'm sending some karma your way.

Thanks for the karma. They think its allergies so I guess I need to try the shots if I ever want to get a good deep breath again. Talk about something you take for granted till its gone.

I would hit the zone easily when swimming. It was like I could swim forever. I used to bicycle a lot and would get into lala land but not the same zone as swimming because of the traffic issues. I have not experienced that with xc skiing, which I used to love but had to cut back on because of inflammed knees. I might up the cardio if I could in that zone, again; but that hasn't happened. I will know I hit it when an hour is up and I never noticed the time pass.

Never experience anything like a "runner's high" I'm not so sure it even exists.

I don't run (bad knees) but I feel pretty good after I've done my third set of squats. It is usually a mixture of wanting to vomit mixed with an incredible high that I lifted what I wanted to do.

I have never experienced a runner's high, but I do know it can be addictive. My Psych 1 prof also worked as a substance abuse counselor. One of his patients was a 30 year old woman who had already had her knee joints replaced twice, and needed to have it done again. She was addicted to the high like any drug, and would not stop running.

i've never experienced a "runner high"...i really don't like to run, hated it when i was younger...i could play basketball all day long because you don't really think about running...that kind i don't mind but jogging i just can't do...of course now, my knees could not take the pounding...
when i was younger though, i did experience "the pump" when lifting to the extreme...

oh...I SO know what you mean! Do your Kegel exercises EVERY TIME you go to the bathroom and cut back on the caffeine. I also started keeping hard candy or Hall's with me when I run so my mouth doesn't get so dry on race days. If it's a really warm day, I'll drink just a little water during the run. I'm not in any danger of dehydrating...it's just if I drink very much water, I'm gonna need to pee before I can get to the finish line
