I was reading the train wreck thread on YM and thought about how there seems to be very common pitfalls in money, and how we can spot them a mile away. But in eating, it seems to be more difficult. Do you know anyone who is a nutritional train wreck? What do you see them doing? Me. My depression kills my appetite. I try to force myself to eat more than one meal a day, but it's very difficult. MDW -- have you gone to your doctor yet? You should look into getting on anti-depressants right now.

Not yet. I've been avoiding it because of cost and that depression is a huge red flag on your medical history.

Not yet. I've been avoiding it because of cost and that depression is a huge red flag on your medical history. I have depression too MDW- and I use to take Zoloft until it just one day quit working. After that I tried 4 other drugs, all with unbearable side effects. It was a terrible roller coaster of out of what emotions, headaches, hallucinations, etc. And you are right, I couldn't get a life insurance policy if it weren't for work because they see that as a risk. I have found that 5htp works really well. It's a supplement you can buy at the drugstore. If you try it, make sure you eat before taking it or it will make you nauseous.

I've tried St. John's Wort, it does nothing for me. I went through a depression about 20 years ago, and two months of Prozac did the trick. But add that to the fact that I had cancer as a kid (39 years AGO), and my insurance applications get stamped "LEPER OUTCAST UNCLEAN!"

I need to vent - so instead of starting a new thread, I'm reviving this. I have a friend, whom I love dearly. Her kids are my age, and I love her kids dearly - but she is teaching them horrible eating habits. She came over yesterday and called and said "I'll bring snacks." Great - I was expecting a pack of cookies or something. We had plans to go out to dinner a couple hours later. She showed up with 5 dozen hot wings and 3 bags of chips. Her kids took the chips and just walked around eating them for hours. My kids just munched all afternoon - and my husband felt guilty and ate a whole bunch of hot wings (I think the guilt was secondary to the taste of the hot wings.) I cancelled our night out because I knew no one would want to eat.
And then she says "I have such a hard time getting my kids to sit and eat dinner." Gee - maybe it is because you let them wander around the house and eat crap food all afternoon.

At what age do you start to really have to monitor your kid's eating habits. Right now, we basically let my daughter eat whenever she wants, but I am starting to worry that she snacks too much, rather than eating more at meals. Also, she has a big belly. i don't want to be setting her up to fail.

Arch - when they are preschool age, timing isn't quite as important as content. My kids snacked a lot, but ate a lot of fruits and veges, so I let it go. When they get to be school aged you are setting them up with habits that will possibly stick with them for a lifetime, so you will want to think it through a little more carefully. At that point, they have a lot of opportunity to make their own decisions, and choose junk food - so you want to make sure their meals are balanced.

Also, she has a big belly. She's pretty young right? Most kids have a big belly until about 3 or 4 when they get their first real growth spurt and their torsos are long enough for their guts to fit right.
