Caddy, I understand it is a way for her to eat what she wants and at the same time appear to be trying to cut back. I don't say anything, but I guess deep down she knows what she is doing. I would think the best thing for her would be not to have it around in the first place. I try not to dine out with people who tell me how unhealthy my food choices are. Yes, I'm having the drink with whipped cream, yes I'm having the pasta with cream sauce AND yes I'm having real butter on my bread!

I used to work with a gal who was a vegetarian and she would moo if I ate beef at lunch, and give me this whole song and dance about how sad that cow's mother was. I retorted that the cow's mother wasn't sad because I ate her last week. This chick wore leather shoes. I eventually cornered her at told her to give her moral values a rest at lunch time, but also excused myself from ever eating with her again.
I also don't understand why overweight vegetarians have to be so bossy. If your diet is really that healthy, you wouldn't be so heavy. Just because it doesn't have meat, doesn't mean it is a nutritional free-for-all. Pringles, although vegetarian, are not healthy.

I retorted that the cow's mother wasn't sad because I ate her last week. Read more: notmsnmoney.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthyliving&action=display&thread=1914&page=2#ixzz1BbiJTj9JGlad I swallowed my water before I got to that. I have always hated people pointing out how small I am or how little I eat. I always wanted to point out that if they ate at reasonable times of the day and in moderation, they could be smaller than they are. I eat what I want to eat and when I'm full or satisfied, I stop. I used to put away a pound of peanut M&M's every night when I was 18 or 19 and probably still could if I let myself. But I don't keep to many sweets around and have learned that I sleep better if I don't eat in the 3 hours before I go to bed at night.

I hate when I've put on 5 pounds and coworkers bring in candy and muffins and try to shove them down your throat - really - and bring around their kids Girl Scout cookie order forms. Food is my vice and these temptations are hard to deal with. I was eating healthy for a few days and then I caved and used the tortilla chips that someone brought in to eat my tuna salad with. I hope that the person that left the chips here stubs his/her toe today. Okay, I threw them away and will not eat anymore chips.

I'm a nutritional train wreck, I am also an overweight vegan/vegetarian (not preachy or mean though.) My down fall has always been carbs, I will sometimes forget what I have had to eat and repeat meals - like hash browns for breakfast, and french fries for lunch. My goal for this year is to eat more fruit. Most of it actually tastes good, and if I remember to bring grapes with me then I won't grab a bag of Fritos for a snack.
It's the sedentary lifestyle that's killing me. In college I was running myself ragged, and ever since I got promoted to a desk job I have put on ~ 10lb/year. Oh, and mainlining Pepsi doesn't help.
My money habits somewhat echo my eating. I don't track my spending all that much, and I don't budget. Whatever is left in the checking account after bills are paid ends up getting spent on Olive Garden or Star Wars toys.

Oooooh my. Carbs are my downfall too bread and cheese and pasta are three of my favorite things in the whole world. I also like Coke way too much, although I've mostly cut that out in the last few weeks (I'm getting serious about losing 10lbs and toning up for my wedding this summer) I've gotten back to the gym (and kept up with it!), put at least double the veggies into my diet (eating them for snacks now), cut most of my sugar, and cut the soda out and cut a lot of dairy out (cheese is a huge downfall of mine) I feel I'm doing pretty decently so far. We'll see if I actually start to drop a few pounds... it's hard for me to lose weight :/ I'm 5'3" and 140lbs, so I'm not that overweight or anything, but I'd like to get back to 130.

I used to be a nutritional trainwreck. And my weight and my health showed it. I was a Type 2 diabetic taking 4 insulin shots a day, and still not keeping up with my blood sugars. And I weighed 375 pounds. Yep. Pathetic. Then I decided to research nutrition rather than dieting. And I read a bunch of books on healthy eating. And I decided to adjust my eating and my lifestyle. Now I eat 1800 calories a day, focusing on high fiber, heart-healthy whole grains, 8-10 servings of fresh veggies, and plenty of lean protein. (My diet's about 20% fats, 35% protein, 45% complex carbs, and I average 70g of daily fiber.) I also started biking ... a lot. (3,500 miles in 2010!) The result? In a year I managed to lose about 115 pounds, saw my cholesterol drop 60 points, my triglycerides are now normal, my blood pressure is nearly normal, and I'm off insulin. Yes, I'm still too fat ... but I'm working on that ... slow and steady wins the race.

I'm a vegetarian, but I don't give people crap about eating meat (ok, well once I kinda questioned a woman who raises cows as pets, names them, takes photos of them, then slaughters them for food. That was just bizarre). But it seems at every meal people like to give me the 3rd degree about why I don't eat meat, and what I'm missing out on. I don't like meat. It grosses me out and my body doesn't digest it very well ( I had trouble with esophageal spasms until I gave up meat). I don't tell them what to eat, why do they feel the need to lecture me?

I'm cool with that. But, unfortunately, it has to do more with the personality of the person, not their actual conviction. Some vegetarians are pompous jerks, and some meat eaters are know-it-all assholes. Judgmental personalities don't come with a standard eating plan.

The one that gets me are the snacks and chips that say "organic", so just because it's organic, it's good for you. What happened to whole, fresh foods?
ETA: that includes "organic" cookies.

yeah...DH is buying organic canned beans 'because they are lower sodium'. Uhh...dried beans are REALLY cheap and not that difficult to cook. We have a crock pot! And lots of frozen veggies have NO sodium.

Some vegetarians are pompous jerks, and some meat eaters are know-it-all assholes. Judgmental personalities don't come with a standard eating plan. Blech, exactly. I don't eat meat, but I'm pretty awesome. I help BF pick out meat in the grocery store (because I used to cook in a restaurant and know more about picking out steak than he seems to) and I have no qualms about cooking it for him. I also collect recipes that are strictly for him. I never talk about my food preferences to anyone and I never make comments about what is served when I'm a guest somewhere. And then I always encounter someone who tries to to sneak pepperoni onto my pizza or someone who acts holier-than-thou because they're on a no-gluten, no-breathing , no-fun diet. Blech.

Meghan - I had a friend who gave up beef and some pork - she was awesome about it. I didn't even know she had done it until I noticed at one party she was eating potato salad and cole slaw.
I always made allowances for her because she was so cool about it.

Dianartemis do you thing our foremother worked out? Artemis: My foremothers on both sides were farmers (excepting my maternal grandmother & my mother). I don't think they needed to exercise as much, because they didn't live a sedentary lifestyle. It wasn't until they stopped being active, that the weight would creep up. Unless you were wealthy, you wound up being more active than we are today just by everyday things. No vacuums, rug beating...that takes a lot of muscle by the way. Let's face it, if we had more active jobs, instead of at the computer, we'd be burning more calories on an hourly basis. I'm not saying that we wouldn't be overweight, but maybe not as overweight. Plus when you make everything from scratch, you tend to eat better.

Frugal, we had an obese patient on my floor at the hospital (over 500 lbs) and "to keep the customer happy", the hospital put in a dorm size fridge in his room!! REALLY?!? He was in for wound care so the nurses and aids needed to be strict with rolling him over so bed sores didn't get worse. He use to ring his call bell and ask the aid to get a snack out of his fridge for him. If we weren't so disgusted we would have cried for the guy.

So far ((fingers crossed & knees & eyes & elbows)) I am slllowly loosing with mostly better variety of veggies & portion control! BTW, I don't drink sodas...regular or diet! And they are discovering that "diet" drinks make you want MORE sweets!
I use real butter, jumbo eggs, unbleached & wheat flour. We rarely have steak, but we do have a VARIETY of other meats. I don't care for fish so that only appears a couple of times a year! And I trim as much fat as possible from ALL cuts of meat!
I know plenty of folks who are nutritional train wrecks...but you should see them pack away the food when they eat here! I think their bodies are starved for wholesome calories instead of empty ones...chips, etc.

I keep a three tiered bowl of fruit on my kitchen table and I always have beautiful fresh fruit in there - whatever is in season - apples, oranges, bananas, peaches, grapefruit, kiwi, pears. I would say that 80% of the kids that come into my house look at the tower of fruit and say "Can I have a..." Their parents are always shocked! Wow, they never eat fruit at home!! Real food is beautiful and people are naturally drawn to it.

I got a kick out of some of the vegetarian posts. I am not a vegetarian, but I do have respect for them, and vegans as well. I've written on the subject, and questioned why we cannot all get along and respect one another (my story included a list of local restaurants to make all sides happy). And when I do review restaurants now, I take pains to point out the non-meat options.
The nutritional train wreck I know is a militant vegetarian; the type of person who screams at you in public if you don't believe in doing things her way, and bullies waiters and chefs into making her something that's not on the menu (note: there is a nice way to ask, and a not-so-nice way. The not-so-nice way can turn out to be not-so-good for you, as chefs and waiters have ways of exacting revenge). Incredibly overweight, she things pizza, pasta, bread, etc. is fine in any amount because it's not meat, and she's eating her veggies with them. Ummmmm...no.

I am not a vegetarian, nor do I intend to be - but I like to do what I call "60 minute vegetarian" - which basically I eat a vegetarian meal here and there. I was trying to do one vegetarian meal a week, and I've been somewhat disappointed in the recipes I've been finding. I notice that they are almost never about vegetables - they are more about not being meat. I've run into many recipes that are loaded with soy and cheese, but no vegetables in sight.
My intent with a weekly vegetarian meal was to make vegetables the star of the show - the point - the main contender. But instead, I found an awesome way to eat 12 pounds of ricotta in one sitting. (It was really, very, very good!)
I did find one recipe that I've mentioned here that is zucchini, beans, corn, onions, etc, made into a taco. To me, it is a great "vegetarian" meal - because you know you are eating a vegetable - but you also get some protein, and it is filling and yummy. But haven't found too many others like that.

Yes, I know lots of people who are dietary train wrecks, and I am probably on the track for a smash up myself. As a matter of fact I have decided that I have my own personal permission to become jubba the hutt when I turn 75 (still more than 20 years away). But I don't whine on and on about how I'd give anything to be thinner while doing absolutely nothing to make it happen. Two of my coworkers crack me up. One is pregnant and constantly talks about how she can't stand how heavy she is, but eats fast food for lunch and snacks every day. The other one was very thin when younger, but now is very heavy and her food choices are all processed foods. I am doing my best to just be deaf when they start to complain. Besides I don't have the right to point fingers. I won't even get on the scale at the doctors. I don't care what I weigh I just want to feel good and enjoy my life.

I have been there. Over the past 4 to 5 years I have been experimenting with my diet(I wouldn't suggest it), from eating all organic/whole foods, eating convention foods and eating fast/processed foods. The main thing I have found for weight loss or gain is moderation. Now when you are healthy, your body should tell you when you need to eat or not. Don't eat foods when your not hungry it is just not necessary and you will ultimately gain weight(minus some incredible metabolism). Now as far as health, well pretty much organic/whole foods is the way. Purchasing and eating conventional vegetables/fruits you can get by, but there is too many gmos/pesticides added that takes away from the nutrition. A lot of the seeds they have now are genetically modified with the pesticides in them. Either way, when I was experimenting with my own body(yeah yeah I know I am stupid, but too damn curious ) I could see the major difference in the energy and immune system that I had. I noticed that many things like headaches, pains and acid reflux ended up happening when I was eating the process foods or when I was over eating. I found another good thing that helped me feel better and that was the way I cooked my food. Fried=bad, baked=bad, microwave=bad, deep fry= really really bad,(unless using the proper oil)steaming=good, al dente= best or just eating raw(fruits and vegetables). A lot of the bad cooking styles just kills the nutrition of our food. As far as dietary train wrecks, I go to a local supermarket and can count hundreds of them. I would go as far as to saying that the majority of America could be include in this group. I think the diabetes numbers themselves show that. Go check out this website. JIMO www.diabetesatlas.org/

I was reading the train wreck thread on YM and thought about how there seems to be very common pitfalls in money, and how we can spot them a mile away. But in eating, it seems to be more difficult. Do you know anyone who is a nutritional train wreck? What do you see them doing? Me. My depression kills my appetite. I try to force myself to eat more than one meal a day, but it's very difficult.
