As a child I was a sugar junkie, but not now. My 1 lb box of sugar has lasted me over a year. Lustig comes off as a zealot to me, I don't think sugar is quite as bad as he says it is.

This will date me but I used to read Adelle Davis's healthy eating books. Refined sugar was referred to as poison back then and breakfast cereal as zero nutrition while the box it came in had better nutrients. Sugar is a villan in any of it's forms. I think sugar has it's place in a balanced eating program and I am not giving it up entirely. The place I stop sugar is soft drinks. Reducing the number of teaspoons/tablespoons of sugar can aid in weight reduction. The sugar reduction also includes the sugars in fruits. I love dried fruits but quit them also because the sugar is so concentrated. Dried pineapple IS candy. ETA: MDW: how is your eating intake coming along? Did you figure out a cause of being full with mini amounts?

My truffles were a Mother's Day gift. Does this mean they were trying to off me? Hey Archie, want some candy little boy? ;D

Archie, I will give you 5 dollars and a spare dryer you can use for parts if you can eat enough of them to throw up.

We've been eating healthier for a couple years. I have to admit that the article does make me want to try and cut refined sugar out of our diet completely. Maybe it's poison, maybe it's not, but even the people saying there isn't enough evidence to link sugar to cancer or fatty liver aren't saying that it has any real health benefit. Besides, my kids made me give up smoking, this gives me something to hit them back with.

I'm usually a "anything in moderation" kind of gal but with sugar I just can't do that. I seem to handle fine things like the sugar in my rice milk, or an oz or two of dark chocolate (that is sweetened). But I have a very chemical reaction to something like jelly beans. Both my parents and my three sibs are addicts and I used to wonder how I was able to escape that. In the past year or two I've realized I haven't escaped it...it's just that my "drug" is sugar. Obviously not everyone is that way.
My SIL is sugar-free. She was having a bunch of yeast issues and finally figured out it was sugar.
I'm not a doctor or chemist, but it would be interesting to see if the theory of elevated blood sugar helping cancer cells grow holds water. In the meantime, I'll probably try to cut our family's already lowish sugar consumption back a bit. I rarely buy sugar - a 5lb bag lasts us over a year - but it is added to so many things (like the rice milk).

I refuse to believe anyone that says that apples are bad for you - unless you are talking about someone who is diabetic - then I know that the sugars in fruit do mess with you - but for normal people - apples, oranges, berries, etc. They shouldn't be eliminated and replaced by some frankenfood version of jello or something.

Hmm. I never heard of a fruitarian until today. I eat a lot of fruit. If the truffles don't kill me I guess the strawberries are going to do me in. Now I want a chocolate covered strawberry.

I eat fruit every day and I've never been outside of my target weight range. Even recently when I lost a little more than 10 pounds, I went from the top of my target range to the middle.
I don't dip my fruit in anything or modify it - just peel and eat (or not peel, depending on the fruit.)

Chocolate covered strawberries are so good! However, I do eat fruit everyday and I eat it plain most of the time...except when I baking and cooking it in a dessert. Oh nevermind, I'm bad, very bad.

For me, it's hard to stop eating refined sugar once I start, so I try to avoid it. I once bought a bag of red licorice bits and ate the whole thing. It's better if I don't even start. I avoid high-fructose corn syrup if at all possible; you wouldn't believe how much prepared food contains it. Heck, it's in canned tomato soup. WHY?
I don't put fruit in the same category. There's just something about the chemistry of candy and baked goods that makes you want to gorge on them. Few people overdo it on fruits, and you also get water, fiber and vitamins.

My wife had gastric bypass surgery, so she has to avoid refined sugars like the plague. Just a few grams will make her horribly ill. She can still eat fruit. The doctor explained that it doesn't hit the body the same because it has to be broken down first by the digestive process.

Natural sugars found in fruits & veggies are nothing like refined sugar.
Also, your choice of sugar can have something to do with it too. Most of the refined sugar found in our grocery stores have a label that says, "pure sugar"....yes, it is...pure BEET sugar. Only the packages that say, "pure CANE sugar" comes from the sugar cane. And GMO beet sugar should be hitting the market this year if it hasn't already! Not something I want in my body if I can avoid it. So far no chemical company has messed with sugar cane!
Personally, we use stevia for sweetening our drinks...coffee, tea, etc. It has no calories! I am growing stevia plants too. I'll harvest & make my own sweetener.
Pineapple has less natural sugar than an orange! It is actually pretty good for diabetics! Orange juice, however, isn't that good unless they are on the verge or have gone into a coma!
