running gets really hard!
Did a fitness test with my daughter's yesterday. Max push ups, sit ups, and pull ups in two minutes, and a 1 mile run. My sit ups were about the only decent number, and my whopping two pull ups was really pathetic. So after that kick in the nuts, we head to the track near the house.
I start out at a nice steady 7 and a half minute to 8 minute per mile pace. Easy peasy right? Four quick laps and I'm done. Just like my military fitness test. Yeah... that lasted for a little over one lap. One freaking lap, then I turn the corner so I'm heading straight into the wind, my lungs are already burning like mad, my legs are tired, I barely pushed through the straightaway and then walked around the corner. I was able to sack up and run the rest of lap two, but decided to just do a timed half mile so called it quits there, with a final time of 4:09.
What the hell happened to me? I used to blow out my fitness test, then light up a cigarette as I walked off the track to head back home or to work. I've run 2 miles in 14 minutes flat with a freaking hangover, and I was a smoker then too. I haven't smoked since New Year's Eve, but I guess it's all caught up to me now.
It can only get better from here I guess.

Someone mentioned the heart stress test to me a while back. I could not do that as I HATE cardio. Perhaps I should start practicing.

I printed the stress test off. A 70 y.o friend was in to get one done today. She sounded icky last week and cancelled on a social outing. I also found out that if a person cannot run on a treadmill, there is a passive method using a shot to get the heart going.
No thanks to both of these!

No thanks to both of these! the passive method involves chemically inducing the heart to stress itself out. my Nana used to have this version because she couldn't hold her balance even walking on a treadmill. that always freaked me out, and I know if I ever need to do a stress test, I'll have to go that route too. I look like I'm drunk when I try to use a treadmill, I'm hanging on for dear life.

When you throw one leg out of bed in the morning and you hope the other one follows.

So, the whole family went back to the track today. They have one of those fitness trail things. You know, it's got a little workout station (push ups, dips, sit ups) every 20 yards or so? We did that. Then we had a one lap race on the track. It was fun, other than being hotter than freaking hades. Thermometer in the car said 88. I know I grew up in the deserts of AZ, but I just don't function well in the heat. I'm actually sitting with my testicles in a bowl of ice water as I type this trying to cool down.
Family fitness summer is happening though damnit! Even if I melt in the process.
Oh, and I was able to do five pull ups. Still sorry, but a damn sight better than the two I did this weekend.
Anyway, off to eat then I'm lifting while the wife goes to derby practice.

Once you get back into the swing of things, you will start feeling younger and younger. Then you will injure yourself because you will forget the real age of your body. Good job on the family fitness Dark.

Once you get back into the swing of things, you will start feeling younger and younger That is so not true I never was a great runner but at 58, it's just harder and harder to get up and maintain speed. OTOH, I've pushed a few limits over the last few years and found that I could do things I thought were beyond me. I've bragged about my triathlons before but I'll do it here, too! I attempted the first one 2 years ago (1/3 mile lake swim, 9 miles on the bike, 3K walk/run) and actually enjoyed it. Last month I did one that was 1.5 times those distances. Still enjoyed it and came out smiling. Another one of the shorter distance type coming up a week from tomorrow. When I come out of a pool dripping wet, I still feel like I'm 12 years old. So keep at it, and don't accept artificial limits. I know I"m never going to do an Olympic or IronMan, but I can do a lot more than I thought I could even a couple of years ago. And, BTW, the idea of being injected with something that makes my heart race sacres the heck outta me. I hate treadmills but give me the darn treadmill.

You know you are getting old when..... you need trifocals instead of bifocals. everything heads south....boobs, butt, flab. it takes more than one try to get out of the rocking chair. it takes a couple of hours to get all the parts moving in the morning. you don't care if you use makeup or not....not a lot of difference. you decide you will never wear "heels" again. you would rather watch the squirrels & birds than the tv. Everyone feel free to add to my list! Dark isn't old enough yet to know what all will happen! ;D
