From what I read, you are into power lifting.
When you bench your max, do you push with your heels or your toes into the ground?

Neither. I try to keep my feet flat and push more with my hips than feet really. Hips never leave the bench of course. I use a really wide grip though so I don't think I gain too much via lower body mechanics.

I had a great session yesterday and I noticed I was pushing with my heels on heavy benches. I didn't go wide grip though. It messes up my shoulder. I go about 1 inch away from the smooth part.

Mine too, I'm currently unable to bench much. Using a bench shirt really helps stabalize you but I only wear them in competition, never in training. A few months ago I brought my grip in about an inch. Waiting on an appointment with a specailist atm.

Me too. I tried to work through the pain but the day after I do chest I can't sleep it hurts so bad and slowly gets a bit better subsequent days. Still hurts to put on shirts etc though. Oddly enough working shoulders does not bother it.

Well you definitely need to find out what is wrong if it hurts you that badly. Since you are injured, this is probably my best chance to beat you in a wrestling match.

LOL. Okay, so I'm confident I can beat you with your injury, two hands and leg tied behind your back and a piece of duct tape over your mouth. ;D

Do you think a wider grip works better with shorter arms? I have always put my middle finger on the smooth mark on the bar. I think all bars have a mark in the same spot? If I went any narrower, I feel like my arms get tangles up with my chest.

tractor, the narrower you go, the more inner chest you work. If you go really narrow, then you will end up working your triceps more.
I go about 1-2 inches from the shoulder lenght.

It's not about arm length. It's about what muscles are stronger for you. Wider grip favors someone with a stronger chest and a narrower grip favors those with strong tricepts. It's also what's more comfortable for you. My sticking point is right when the tris begin to take over the load from the pecs. So a wider grip is favorable for me. However, I started bodybuilding long before I tried powerlifting and I learned to bench wide because I wanted to work my chest when I benched so I learned wide grip to isolate the chest and it's most comfortable for me now.

Yes, I used to love those and narrow grip benches but can't do them due to shoulder.

I picked this up from people who have shoulder surgery.
Bend forward slightly, let your arm(s) dangle down then make small circles, clockwise and counterclockwise.
I don't know what it's called but the machine looks like bike pedals but the hands are used.
Youtube also has some preventive maintenance shoulder exercises.

That move is actually on one of the p90x videos during last part after shoulder's workout. It does feel great
