Any way to help avoid them? I get them on my shoulders and on the upper parts of my legs. They hurt like hell some days and I have been trying to put lotion on them. I guess it's one of the side effects of getting muscles to grow.

I've had quite a few in my early days of lifting. They come from gaining weight too fast. That being said mine were never painful just ugly. They do fade with time. They sell creams for pregnant women which I used and it does work but you have to be religious in their use. I got mine about 20 years ago and you can't even see them now.

cocoa butter works I heard.
Like Pig said...they come from weight gain too fast or from fast weight loss.

XH and his brother both had them. I know that for XH the stretch marks seemed to sunburn very easily. He hated them, but they really weren't that noticeable IMO.

They've never been painful for me. I found that I don't get them when I lose slowly and steadily, as opposed to periods of rapid weightloss.

Stretch marks are NOT caused by losing weight. You get them by GAINING weight at a rate faster than your skin can stretch. If you have them they will be there BEFORE you lose the weight, they just become more noticeable by losing the weight.
