Any suggestions for good running shoes? A particular brand / style you may have liked in the past? I am not into running at all (rather work out for 2 hours instead of doing 30 minutes cardio) but my wife managed to volunteer both of us to run with her cousin (they are training for 5K, 10K and half marathon this summer ) So looking into getting some good quality shoes this week, nothing too expensive since I might quit in a week or two... but that is comfortable to run in. They are both regular runners, but I am not. I will be using the "from couch to 5K" training program and I believe it calls for 3 cardio sessions a week anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes.

I found some New Balance shoes at Ross for $40 and they are great for the price.
I never spend more than $50 on tennis shoes because they look worn and old so soon after buying them (in my experience).
I want to start jogging too. Maybe I'll jog around the block tonight to get started

I find the answers you get will vary depending on people's feet. I swear by Asics, but I have very narrow feet. a couple friends, who run half-marathons, hate Asics in favor of New Balance. they both have wider feet. I'd suggest finding a place near you that will fit you. there's one in my area that will put you on a board that determines your pressure points and how your foot changes shape in motion. it's a bit pricey for one shot, but once you know what you should be looking for, you'll be all set for the next pair.
whatever you end up getting, I find the best deals on sneakers by hitting up the local DSW at the end of the season and picking up last season's colors for short money. ($50ish when they retail for over $100) really, as long as they aren't hideously ugly, who cares what colors they are?

I do trail running and typically use Yukons that last about six months.

I have a pair of New Balance (nothing fancy) that I use to run 2-3 times a week.

Each person is different - what works for one of us here might not be right for you. See if there's a running specific shoe store anywhere near you. When I bought my running shoes, the store I went to had me walk and then jog around the store, to get a sense of my stride, and then I tried on probably 10 different shoes made for the way my feet fall, and they looked at my stride in all of those. I ended up with a pair that have were super comfortable and supported me correctly. I think I spent about $85. Make sure to consider socks, too. Much as I hate to admit it, I can totally tell the different between my el-cheapo Target socks, and the $6/pair technical socks I bought when I bought the shoes. Less rubbing, less moisture from sweating, just all around a better experience. I can run in the cheap ones, I just much prefer the nicer socks.

I don't run, but I have very high arches and prefer running shoes because they have better arch support than court shoes. I prefer Asics, they are for me the most comfortable.

Real running shoes have the cushion in the toe area. I don't remember the reference source.
Use a marker and put a date on the insole. The shoes need to be switched out every 100 to 300 miles. Attending a marathon seminar can be a great resource for shoe references from people who run a lot.
I play tennis. From experience, when my knees and lower legs begin to tire too soon, it's time for new shoes. The exterior will look great but the foot bed is beaten down. Replacement insoles can extend the life of the shoe for a while.
If the shoe is an indoor shoe, I move it over to the fitness gym as they are still good for eliptical, treadmill and biking. Or, I will move the indoor shoes to outdoor play for the summer.

I use Asics or Saucony. go to runnersworld.com, they have a shoe finder guide which will help you narrow down your choices. Once you have those go to the running store, mall etc.. to try them on. You can save some money buying on line if you find a pair you like.

I strongly recommend Road Runner Sports which actually advertises on this board now and then. They rate their shoes based on your foot type and weight which really helps in picking shoes. They also have opened some stores on the East coast at least three in NJ if you prefer to buy in person instead of through their catalog.

What works for one person, does not work for another. Certain shoes fit differently and most people determine what fits them best. I wear a combination of NB or Mizuno (when I can get them on sale).
The best way is to go to a running shop and let them fit you. They can take a look at your shoes and tell you if you pronate and direct you to shoes that adjust for that. IMO, it's well worth the cost and once you see what brand works for you, just replace as necessary.

The best post workout (golf) shoe I ever had was a $10 pair of No Boundary. They were light weight nubby soled and had a solid foot bed.

When I used to run, I went to a store where they did the specialty fitting. Well worth it, to get a pair that supported my foot the way it needed to be.

Runners World magazine online might help. They should have the new style product reviews ready.

I wear Asics 2150s. I love that range as I am a mild over-pronator and they stabilise your gait.
Not sure what stores are available where you live, but make sure you go somewhere the staff are qualified to fit you, and they have a treadmill so you can test out the shoes and they can see what works for you. I usually go to Run 4 It, but I'm not sure if they have branches in the USA.
