Anyone here have or thinking about getting the lap band? I was banded Oct 2008 and lost 50 lbs but gained about 20 back. When were you banded? How much have you lost? What is you goal weight loss?

I don't think the band is a good option for most people. It doesn't change the behavoir that got you there in the first place. Which means you'll likely gain the weight back. The one person I know that had it done lost a lot of weight at first, and is even heavier now.
To me, it's a bit like taking out a second morgage to payoff credit cards. Unless you change your lifestyle, you're going to wind up in credit card debt again.

In 2010, I lost about 115 pounds by changing my lifestyle (eating healthier and exercising.) I looked into and dismissed weight loss surgery because I came to the realization that the size of my stomach wasn't what was making me fat ~ it was what I was eating and what I wasn't doing (exercising.)

Congrats on your weight loss, Molly!! Nothing succeeds like success. One of the good things that you need to know about the lap band is that you still need a GOOD FOOD PLAN. I've lost and gained weight more times than I care to mention. But this time regaining the weight was slower because I can't eat as much at each sitting (or snacking). This has helped me because I feel and see the weight coming back on and it has helped me get back on track. The lap band was a great step for me. I only wish there were more support groups in my area. However, I do use on-line msg boards to keep in touch with banders like me and get great ideas and recipes.

a coworker just had the lap band procedure. She's lost 20 lbs. She says she feels great. She is definitely eating much smaller portions.
I also have a good friend whose sister has had gastric bypass...TWICE. As Agile stated, you gotta change the bad habits. This woman stretched her stomach out again by continuing to overeat.
that's what worries me about the coworker, I don't know that she can make a life time commitment to the changes. I really hope that she can.

My mother was going to get this done about a year ago. She isn't morbidly obese, but definitely needs to lose weight. Before you have it done, they put you through a program of counseling & dieting on your own, to make sure you're committed to losing weight before the procedure. Mom did a great job of simply changing her eating habits, and lost about 25lbs, which was great! However, her insurance company decided she lost too much weight and decided they weren't going to cover it for her > even though she needs to lost about another 40-50lbs at least. I felt bad, she was really bummed about it.. she followed the hospital's program & they kept telling her to keep doing what she was doing, then she couldn't have it. She was going to appeal it, not sure where she's at with it though.

Weight bounce-back is quite common after lap band surgery. That's why many surgeons won't do it.

My lap band has helped me slow down my weight gain when I go off my food program. Thankfully, I'm back on track with portion control and South Beach. I'm a fan of the band because I do use it as a weight loss tool. To each his/her own.

well, the coworker has already started to gain weight. She lost over 30 lbs, but at her last WW meeting she had gained. Way too soon (IMO) to be dealing with that.
on the way home from WW, she went to the drive thru for chili dogs & onion rings. Geez. What a waste of money for that procedure. Hopefully it's only a temporary set back, and she'll get back to doing what she should be doing.
