I bought a kitchen scale a while ago - I mostly use it for recipes that come from professional kitchens (or Alton Brown.) I also use it to break up my Costco meat purchases into single-dinner portions.
As I've decided to track my calories just to see how many I actually take in, and make sure it is less than I burn, I have found it a great tool just to make sure I'm sticking with real portion sizes. I don't weigh everything - but only things that I'm not sure my eyeball is correct on.
Last night the battery died! Tragic. I have no idea how big that pork chop was, and I have 3 pounds of ground beef that I need to split up.
Do you have a kitchen scale? Do you use it?

I usually get on my bathroom scale naked with a pork chop in each hand.

We actually have an old postage scale I've been using.

Funny - because I use my kitchen scale when I have to calculate postage.

I use to have a crappy one. I really want to get a quality digital one now, for baking purposes. I have a pretty good eye for portions.

I found a battery - so I'll portion out the meat tonight. I keep it in 10 oz to 12 oz packages. That keeps our portions to the recommended 3 oz each. I don't think that will last forever. Our kids are getting to that "always hungry" phase. Given how active they are, how balanced they eat and how they go through growth spurts, I know I will have to adjust. But for right now I'm just making the adult portions smaller and smaller. I won't move up until my husband and I start to get hungry.
P.S. Don't tell my husband - he hasn't acknowledged what is going on yet.

I love mine. I use it almost daily. This. I just ate 1 oz of potato chips with my lunch. It was a totally satisfying portion, versus how easy it is to just mindlessly eat too much. One downside is that I now know when a manufacturer is shorting on ounces. I hate buying a bag of chips that says 10oz, expecting to get 10 1-oz servings, and only getting 8.5. That makes me feel really ripped off. I noticed that same thing with frozen fruit, and packaged nuts.

Either they include the weight of the bag - or someone is sniveying.

If the bag says net weight - their skimming. I can't imagine there's 2+ oz of air in the bag.

I have a good digital scale, it will weigh in either ounces or grams. It also is programmable so that it can give an exact calorie count of whatever you are weighing.

FYI, Woot is selling a kitrics digital scale (with built in nutrional labeling) for $16 plus s&h today (it's $40 at Amazon). I just ordered one -- the reviews I've seen are good, and it does ounces and grams. www.woot.com
