I was reading an article about energy/nutrition bars in a recent issue of a swimming magazine. The article was a rundown of about twenty different bars and bites (no gels or drinks were reviewed) and one make-your-own bars powder base was also included. The testing panel graded the bars on a variety of things, such as taste, appearance, energy provided, any aftereffects (gastic distress such as bloating), price, availability, etc.
I do a lot of swimming, biking and running, sometimes two workouts a day, and while I am NOT looking to add extra calories, I wondered if a small serving (one-quarter of a bar) would help fuel a better workout, or help recover from one. So I bought a few brands to try out.
Before I tell you my results so far: has anyone else used these? Brands you love or hate? Do they work, or no?

Try a pre workout sup. That will give you all the energy you need. I doubt they'll do anything for recovery.

I've only had power bars. They are ok.

The Power Bars were my least favorite in terms of taste, but they are the most readily available.
I've tried about 1/4 of a small bar (Larabars are the smallest) and find that eaten about 45 minutes before, they do seem to work without causing distress. Does seem to increase energy.
Doc, you are not specific about what "sup" you are referring to. I do use some standard vitamins (a multi, C, D, niacin and fish oil). I take them after a workout, with breakfast, and will not deviate from that practice because it works.

No liquids before a workout. No restroom breaks during a swim, bike or run, Doc. . Not that they don't sound good, though, flavor-wise. Which have you used, or have you tried them all? But using them DURING a workout, in small sips, is a thought. Especially in the heat, while biking or running (I swim mainly in the predawn hours).

That's how I take them. Or you can chug them about 1/2 hr before your workout. I've used:
Jack3D C4 NO Explode Hemorage SuperPump Max
Flavor wise Hemorage was the best. For just energy they all work. They might be a bit much for you but you can just adjust the dosage-that's a huge advantage of the powders as opposed to just a pre made drink.

Thanks, Doc! DH has a car show on Saturday nearby the mall; there's a GNC there. I'll head over see what they have.
