Now that I'm getting buff ;D I seem to have a hard time keeping my shirt on, but for some reason it feels really weird. It seems like "back in the old days" most guys would walk around without their shirts off during the summer. Why am I the only one that does it? Has it become socially unacceptable? My wife thinks I look "hot", but actually it helps me stay cool. FWIW, it was very hot/humid in the gym, so I took my shirt off to show the young guys what a fat old guy looks like. I hope that helped motivate them to work a little harder. I don't think they laughed until after I left.

My thought is the shirtlessness depends on where it is and what is appropriate. The men in my family keep their shirts on so they don't scare the little kids or gross out the teens. The exception is out water skiing or lake swimming. Our gyms have a dress code where people are to be fully clothed. There are a lot of women who would like to show off, too. The golf course has a fully clothed policy and no sports bras for women. That usually ends after the first hole and ended completely with the player assistants driving around. One body builder used to go shirtless and shoeless when golfiing. It was very off putting to the men playing with him. From my view, the wife beater shirts show off the guns which means if they are buff so is the rest adding a little mystery on how defined the abs are ;D

If I were you I would not go shirtless. There is a guy I sometimes work out with who has less body fat than you and my wife (and others) made fun of him when he took his shirt off at the gym, both to his face and behind his back. The gym isn't the place to do it even if you were shredded as you're getting your nasty sweat everywhere.
I don't see many people doing it. I've never felt comfortable without a shirt but then again I can't stand not having something on my feet either, like socks or slippers or whatever. Only time I would is when I'm at the beach or at a pool party or something of that nature.

Actually, their are several guys at the gym that work out without their shirts on, most are really cut. I guess I don't care if someone wants to laugh at me, I will join right in with them. I don't like getting sweat all over the benches either, and I always put a shirt down before I lay/lean against one. My gym is very old school (no towels, or fancy spritz bottles to wipe anything down), it's more like a prison yard gym.
I have just been noticing that even with the extreme heat we had, no one seems to walk around without a shirt on (except at the beach). I m really starting to dislike clothes.

Most of the time they are worn by people who have never been to a gym and their big arms are more fat than muscle, and may be the reason for their name. For some reason, I just can't wear one.

I prefer men to wear shirts, especially in public. The exceptions being the beach, water park, etc. Actually, I take that back. I went to a water park last summer and I was hoping most of those guys (and gals) would put their shirts back on!

I'm not a fan of guys going shirtless, especially at the gym if they are sweating onto equipment. It's more a hygiene issue than a taste issue I think. Our gym has the air conditioning at 16 degrees Celsius (61 Farenheit) and guys aren't allowed to train shirtless.
Have you tried wearing coolmax tops to wick away sweat and keep you cool? I find they work really well for me and couldn't go back to training in cotton t-shirts.

Going shirtless at the gym? Only in the locker room, shower, and pool area would be acceptable at my gym.

I think the bigger problem at my gym is the owner doesn't like to turn the air on so it can get pretty humid in there. There were a couple guys in there last night sans shirt. I think one of the reasons I stopped going about 15 years ago was because it was 100 degrees in there one July day and it seemed like I was working out in a sauna. I figured there had to be something better to do, so I just quit. I'm going to stick it out this time, even if I sicken others with my flabby pale look.

If only it were that easy. In a town of 10,000 people, it's the only gym with free weights. The only other option is actually a Curves. I can't justify driving an hour from home jsut to work out at another spot.

That is disgusting. Have you tried talking to the owner about how uncomfortable it is?

I was at an auction this weekend. It was hot and humid. One guy took his shirt off, and the sight was less than pleasant, his shorts hung so low that you could see half of his crack. It was kind of scary. He has a very large stomach, and no butt. I had to laugh when someone walked up to him and told him to either put his shirt back on, or go home. I immediately thought of this thread.

LOL. Tractor, are you going to ask the gym owner about the air quality? He really doesn't care. I brought it up once and he said "some people think it's too hot, others complain it's too cold, not much I can do about it" There are rumors of a new gym opening up. I hope they're true. As an example of how well this place in maintained, about a week ago someone opened the back door to get some air moving through and a bunch of leaves blew in. They were still scattered around the floor yesterday. I really don't mind, I know I would never work out if I tried to do it at home, so it gets me out of the house. I would think his business would be doomed, but he's been there for over 25 years and things have always been the same. Change is not in his business plan.

He knows how bad it is, he just doesn't care because people are still going there and paying their dues. He needs some competition. I really hope a new gym opens up for you. Don't forget to bring your rake to your next workout.

Or a leaf blower! It could serve dual purposes, as a fan and to get rid of the leaves! ;D

LOL azphx! A leaf blower is a brilliant idea! Ha ha ha. That should cool them down enough to put their shirts back on.
