Up to 50% less apparently. I just saw it on some morning tv show so it must be true. But it makes sense to me. Fill me up with less calories. Soup has just become a bigger part of my menu.

Me too, but it usually does in the winter.

I've heard this from a few sources. like, if you start a meal with a cup of broth-based (as opposed to cream-based, which is loaded with calories) you will slow down your meal and actually eat less overall than if you'd just jumped right into the entree.
I'm with daisylu, soup is a huge part of my winter menu.

The key is making sure it's broth based. Cream based soups usually result in you eating more calories.

I love soups, but I have to be careful because most canned soups are very high sodium.
I LOVE miso and I need to learn to make it. Store bought miso is really high in sodium.

I love soups too. Unfortunately my two favorite soups are cream of crab and lobster bisque.

Have you tried any of Amy's soups? The soups in their low in sodium line all have 340mg or less. I love the vegan split pea, I usually keep that in the house for lunches.

I need to start making soup. I've amassed a collection of recipes, but have yet to make anything. Maybe one of these weekends when I actually have nothing planned!

In my defense for dinner tonight I'm making a very healthy beef soup loaded with tons of veggies. Okay, I'll confess I'm serving crusty bread with real butter too.

I usually make a huge pot of soup and freeze at least half and have an easy dinner several weeks later! Or freeze it into smaller batches and have quick lunches.

I don't know... soup never really seems to make me feel like I've eaten anything. I tried having soup for lunch (with other stuff) and about an hour after lunch I broke down and ate my "afternoon snack" and then I spent the rest of the afternoon grousing and thinking nonstop about how I needed another snack or two or three or four. I do sometimes use canned (or homemade) soup for a late dinner... so I can just haul myself off to bed when the munchies kick in.

Homemade chicken noodle soup for dinner tonight. DD isn't feeling well and I'm hoping she can at least keep the broth down. Luckily, I had the stock and shredded chicken in the freezer. I prefer not to put in any noodles or veggies until I plan on serving it.

I have to say I am a huge soup fan. Most weekends find me making a pot of something for the coming days, and the rest to freeze for later. Most of the time my soups are loaded with veggies and rather thick so they are more satisfying. Rarely do I use any type of meat and I really don't miss it at all. Add a nice slice of bread and perhaps cheese and it's perfectly filling for me! The added bonus, since I have become more of a soup eater, is that I have not gained any "winter" weight in the past few years.

I like soup to help drop the lbs. A whole can of Progresso is under 250 as are Healthy Choice. Maybe half a sandwich would last to snack time.
One idea is to reduce calories one day and eat regularly, within reason, the next. Also, after eating out the night before, limit calories the day after.
I have cut out desserts and candy. That should take off 5 lbs. I am puffy over my muscles which I do not like. A lot of this is age related and bread carbs. I think I'm a carboholic. I do eat 45-calorie per slice bread which works great.
Thanks for this thread as it's nice to get it out.

I feel the same, it's more like drinking something.

I'm broken. I am not crazy about either soup or salad. I always thought the soup thing because I live where it is hot, and soup seems like a cold weather thing. But, as I age I realize - I just don't really like most soups.

I love soup and, fortunately, don't need to worry about sodium so I always stock up on canned soup when it's on sale. I supplement it with loads of chopped veggies (celery, onion, garlic, whatever I have) sauteed in a little olive oil.
DH is wonderful about saving bits of leftover vegetables (the portions of asparagus too fibrous to eat, celery leaves) and chicken carcasses in the freezer and making broth out of them. They make a fantastic soup base. We actually took a turkey carcass home with us in the trunk of the car when we drove home from SC to KS after Christmas- my SIL was going to throw it out!

Campbell's chicken noodle isn't going to fill you up long, too many carbs and sodium, very little protein. Maybe a bean based soup? I love White chili, bean soup, hearty vegetable soup. I make my own at home with organic broth and no meat, and they keep me full like any other meal would. Beans are excellent for keeping you full.

I love soup as well. During the winter, I make a big pot of soup that DH and I will eat all through the week. It certainly makes grocery shopping cheaper. I use two containers of broth, cans of whatever vegetables we like, tomatoes, and will often through in some chicken or turkey for the additional protein. During the week, we just set the pot on the stove and warm it up! Easy, quick, cheap, and healthy!
