I broke down and joined a gym last month when it got to hot to walk outside. I have been doing the elliptical machine with no problem, but this week I finally nerved myself up to try the weight machines. I have been intimidated by them but I got a gym employee to show me what to do. Is there any sort of time frames on when I can expect to move again without pain? I did the whole body circuit thing on Wednesday and hurt all day Thu and Fri, woke up today with soreness and did it again this afternoon to see if it would work any of it out (it didn't).

Kari- there are MANY variables here- how heavy did you lift and for how long? your first time in you should go slow.....it seems you went at it hard?

I've been known to hurt for 6-7 days sometimes when I overdo it. The first time I ever truly lifted weights (with a trainer no less) I could barely walk up my stairs for a week. It is amazing though how fast your muscles recover when you do it the second/third time. Great job trying out weights! I remember about a year ago being too intimidated (hence the trainer). Now I do almost all free weights and am totally comfortable lifting with the guys. I totally love lifting.

Thanks for the support. I am feeling better today except for my triceps, which is unfortunate because they are a very important muscle for putting food and drinks in my mouth. I think I just did too many reps the first day. After I hurt I looked up what I should have done, and webmd was saying 12 reps on each machine would be good for a starter. The gym has a red light/green light system for the circuit that I did and I just kept doing reps the whole time that the light was green. When I went back on Saturday I just did 12 on each machine and I adjusted the weights a little higher so it was tough by the end. I still felt awful afterward but the next day wasn't nearly as bad as from the first time. I figure after a few weeks of this I will try to go up to two sets of 12.

I agree. I did Body Pump this past weekend using at the most 5 pounds including the bar and I was sore for 4 days. I pity those women who were gung ho and used a lot more weight. I was the only one in my age group. Best lifting wishes to everyone.

The trick with Body Pump is to do 2 or 3 classes a week and never miss a class. Then you get used to the permanent dull ache and forget what it was like not to have fatigued muscles

Very true.
I'm trying to get back into this class. Only problem is that it starts at 6 pm, just about the time when I'm exiting the gym. If I go to it, it winds up being too late for me and I'm still bouncing off the walls when I need to sleep.
