Some of the high end gyms do have computers on the equipment. I agree, I need the distraction of our board to make cardio go quicker, but I don't have the cahs for one of the wifi small computers. I have to use the recombant bike in order to read as the shelf for is made for thin magazines not books.

Some of the e-readers are also wifi capable. Staples has a deal where if you buy a Kindle, you get $30 in store rebate. That brings the price down from the $189. That is is you can use the store rebate. I don't know if you have to buy a plan or sign onto someone else's wifi.

DH loaned me one of his MP3s with audio books on it. I've been listening to Night. Very good book, and the reader is fabulous. I find my self walking just a little bit longer because I'm interested in the story.
I've thought about the computer thing, but don't think it's workable for us.
