And I couldn't be happier. I have now hit 198lbs and my BMI is 30! Of course my waist is still at 34" and I've never felt better in my life, but now I have a little denser body mass than I used to. Hopefully I will be super-obese in the future. The funny thing is now that I am approaching 200lbs, I don't feel any bigger, or think that I look much different than I did at 180. I guess I will have to work toward 210 now.

I'm on the other side of the BMI scale. The "voluntary" survey I took during benefits time flagged me as being "dangerously underweight" because my BMI is 18. A "normal/healthy" BMI for my height is 18.5.
Guess I shouldn't have blown my nose before taking the survey.

how are you maintaining a 34 inch waist? usually when I try to gain muscle mass, my waist increases too (quite a bit at that too ), and then in the summer when I try to "cut" some of the muscle "cuts" as well......recommendations? what exactly are you doing if you don't mind to share?

Sorry Rob. I wish I had a secret I could tell you, but I think genetics has more to do with it. I have a medium-small frame so back when I was in high school (and 140lbs), I had a 30 inch waist. Now that I'm pushing 42, I've been able to maintain a 34 inch waist without doing anything special (other than lifting weights).
The way my body is made up (judging my my other male relatives), is that any excess fat is stored right in our stomach. When I started to go up to a 36-38 I decided it was time to get serious about staying away from the basketball sized gut. If I keep my calorie count in line with my excercise schedule, I don't have to worry about my waist expanding. My metabolish has kicked into overdrive, and I eat close to 3,000 calories a day. If I cut back I just don't feel right. If I got serious about trying to really cut some fat, I think I could get back to a 30-32 inch waist within a couple of months. I don't plan on doing that (yet). My goal has always been to add some lean muscle mass, the more muscle, the more calories you can burn. I though 200 was a magic number, I want more mass, so maybe 210 will be my new target (it will take many, many months to get there). I think a significant portion of my muscle gain has been in my legs.
If your waist increases when your trying to put on mass, you might have to look at your diet and start to add more lean protein into your diet for the additional calories, and stay away from the carbs. Everyone's body responds differently, I have found what works for me, but I am a long ways from being lean (re, no define abs). I like chocolate, icecream, and anything sugar coated. It just means I have to move a little more to burn those calories off. And as much as I hate to say it out loud, cutting alcohol out of my diet (no more than two drinks a month) has made a big difference. God I miss my bourbon.
I know that doesn't answer your question, but I really don't feel like I do anything special.

Since she seems to be following her own special growth curve, I imagine she will be well below 18.5 when she's an adult. What she lacks in size, though, she makes up for in spunk. My BMI is 22 and I could easily lose another 20-25lbs to be what I'd consider 100% fit. If I get motivated enough, perhaps one day I'll be "dangerously underweight" too.

LOL. You got 8 more BMI points to reach cawui and 10 more to hit "morbidly obese" like the Pig. Better start eating!
