Swimming is my exercise of choice so when I'm traveling I head for the hotel pool. I'm used to sharing it with kids- I remember how easy it was for me to get in a workout when DS was little if we stayed someplace with a pool- he learned to swim early so I'd just keep an eye on him while I did laps.
This past weekend I was in a hotel with a great pool and, as usual, half a dozen little kids. The parents were all sitting in chairs by the side. This is typical. Why the heck don't they want to swim? You would have had to nail me to a deck chair to keep me from jumping in and enjoying the water. Is is that people don't know how to swim? They feel funny being in a suit in public? They're lazy? Or, as DH suggested, they figure the water has a yellowish cast to it? ;D

They want to visit with their friends while the kids are busy.
And yes to all of your questions.

I don’t like to swim unless it is really hot. I do not like to be cold at all. If it is an indoor pool it has to be warm enough for me to get in.

is it outdoor pool? maybe they are trying to tan? No- indoor. I still can't get over people who lie outside and try to develop a deep, dark tan, though. I get enough to look healthy just from swimming and I know I should be using sunscreen even then. Sun reflects off the water so you actually catch more rays in the pool.

Swimming in the hotel pool is something I would skip.

Do you know how many parasites are hiding in that hotel pool water? I try to swim whenever I can, but it seems that most people would rather sit on the side. What really annoys me are the screaming little brats that have no supervision in the pool, even if their parents are there.

It's not just swimming pools - I noticed the same thing this weekend at the picnic we had for DS2's graduation. The adults (my sibs and parents) all sat in the shade, gossiped, and fussed over food, while DS's HS friends were busy and active despite the heat: kickball game, a hike along the ravine trail, waterballoons and squirt guns, hide & seek, duck-duck-goose, get the Beast (one of the guys who played the Beast in the musical this year).
Then again, maybe DS just has an unusual set of friends. They also brought along their instruments and played for fun. There was a string bass, electric bass and several e. guitars (and amps), violins and violas. They teased one friend for not bringing his cello.

Personally, I loathe pools. They do nothing for me.
I will tolerate the ocean, but I don't even like that.
Some people just don't like to swim. I am one of them. MY exercise of choice is spinning. I am just fine with the thought that not every one likes to spin!

I'm not a big swimming/water fan myself, but every hotel pool I have ever been in was chlorinated (I could tell by the smell) far beyond what is recommended for a home pool. These places aren't stupid and realize what lawsuits could do to them.

You can't really exercise in a hotel pool, unless you are doing water exercises. Not like you can really do laps with a small pool full of kids. I used to enjoy swimming but now the chlorine really bothers my eyes. A colleague who did Ironman triathlons and I stayed at a hotel in White Plains with a tiny pool. We both used it before breakfast but he was typically there earlier than I was. One morning I got there early- he had a long rubber-band type thing attached to his waist and the other end attached to a ladder in the pool. That allowed him to keep swimming in the same place. That's one way to get your exercise! I know what you mean about chlorine. You do need a lot to prevent algae in indoor pools because they're warmer, but once I used one in a hotel that was so bad the next day my eyes were bloodshot. That day they closed the pool completely. Chemical imbalance, they said. Guess someone got a little generous with the chlorine.

"I enjoy that. But, i really enjoy the lake or river the most. The water is clean and refreshing with no chlorine and nothing in it to eat you." I love swimming in the lake...the water is clean enough to drink. However, some of my friends won't set foot in it. "A fish might bite me. Ducks poop in that water. It's deep..are you sure there's no lake monsters"? Oy vey!
