Archie, I don't know if I can convince you to go........ I went to Hawaii a few years ago and I didn't want to go either.
But I'm so glad I did. It is a beautiful place. I love warm weather, pretty beaches, scenery and clear blue water so it was perfect for me.
Ummm, go just to make Mrs. Archie happy. You may surprise yourself and actually enjoy it.

Hawaii is so beautiful. It's paradise. I should know.....I was born there many many years ago. My husband and I honeymooned there 22 years ago. We plan on going back for our 25th anniversary. This time our sons will be joining us......no chance of leaving them home.

Wendy. If you were to choose one place to go in Hawaii for a week, where would it be?

I was born on the island of Oahu. We love Waikiki Beach and all the surroundings. We had such a wonderful time. Sometimes it's not about the money. If you love your wife, suprise her with a plan to go and watch her face light up. Life is for making happy moments. Blue skies,Blue water, Palm trees,Brilliantly colored flowers, and Plunging waterfalls....whats not to love.

Archie.....what didn't you like about it? Why don't you want to go?
I went to Hawaii a couple years ago when I had a research meeting in Honolulu. Me and a group of friends decided to tour a couple of the islands, so after the meeting we spent 4 days in Kauai, 4 days in Maui and the others went on to spend 4 more days on Hawaii (I had to go back to class).
I'd go back to Kauai in a heartbeat. I loved it there. I'd go back to Maui again too. I've done Oahu and really have no urge to go back there. IMO, once you've seen and done all the tourist stuff, then it's just more fun to sit back and relax on the other islands.

I agree about enjoying the other island as well. We spent 5 days on Maui and it was awesome. Oahu was all about taking everything in. We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village right on Waikiki Beach. Maui was much more quiet. We took a ride to Haleakala..one of the volcanos. It was great considering my ears bothered me from the elevation. Lahaina on Maui was a great place if you like to view and buy a piece of Hawaiian art. We bought a beach scene painting that I loved and had it shipped home. Boy, would I like to jump into that picture right now. We just came back from Disney World and it was cold....and I live in NE.

Archie.....what didn't you like about it? Why don't you want to go? I loved it. We had a great time. But the time it takes to get there, plus we'd have to leave DD at home, plus the cost... I am trying to get the whole fam to go to Florida.

Archie, Why would you have to leave DD at home? We actually do want to go and take the boys at some point. We honeymooned in Maui, in Ka'anapali, and then vacationed several years ago in Wailea and did a day trip over to Oahu. If we go with the boys, I think Waikiki would be a fun place to stay. She is too young to be able to handle the travel time... probably more for our sake than her, but

Arch, I would highly recommend that you visit more than one island. If you are going to invest the time to get there, make the experience count. Each island has its own flavor. My family has spent our yearly vacation for the last six years on at least three of the islands. Our personal favorite is Maui. We stay at the same condo on Kaanapali beach each year for the last few days of our trip. I do however, like the Big island of Hawaii. That is another world. It really depends what you want to do. If you are like me....get up, go to the beach...eat lunch...go to the beach...eat dinner...go to the bar.

This is from Bloomberg news. Apparently the mountain tops only but still ski down the mountain to the beach and surf in the surf of Hawaii in one day.

All right here is the deal I've been to three islands. Stay away from Oahu it is too crowded and Honolulu is a city who wants that? Maui is the most commercial so if you want them to create an island paradise for you, then that's the place for you. Kauai sounds like the most tropical, haven't been there but sounds good. The Big Island is the place for me, you can stay in luxury but it has such a diverse topography that you can do pretty much whatever you want. Volcanoes check, rain forest check, mountains check, waterfalls check. A lot depends on what you want to do but I'm a big get out and explore type and The Big Island is da pound. Also don't island hop you want to relax and unless it's an extended stay it disrupts the vacation, IMO.

973 - You can move in with me when I move there. Deal and I'm not kidding. I tell my family all the time that one day I am going to get tired of everything and just chuck it all and move there. On bad days I have been know to say I wouldn't tell them in advance either.

Archie, I lived on Oahu for 3 years. It is beautiful, but extremely touristy. Honolulu is packed pretty much all the time. I personally do not like the touristy spots. The North Shore isn't too bad unless it is Pipeline season (winter months).
I would recommend going to Kaui or one of the less touristy spots. But that is just me.

I have a house in Hawaii, and have been to all the islands. Honolulu is fun, but it's a big city. The best of Hawaii is not in a big city. Maui and Kaua`i have been Californicated. Lana`i and Moloka`i are both very beautiful and serene, but feel very remote, not a lot to do, except lie by the pool at Manele or play golf all day, which is excellent, or find a remote beach. For me, Hawai`i Island is the place. A lot of room, a lot to see. Best of everything. And yes, you can even ski there! No lifts of course, only about 400 vertical feet for the main area on the top, but it is a lot of fun! And at that altitude, very hard!

Since I like whale watching, I prefer Hawaii in December and January ~ but that's just me. We may go back this next December (2011) if we can schedule it between my wonderful DH's deployments to Iraq.

I am not a golfer and am no longer a sun bunny, so I think if I were to see Hawaii I'd like to see it from a cruise ship. They have cruise ships that you can take you from island to island. Has anyone done that?

Hey whiskmav Just shot you some karma! Buzz's Wharf! Outstanding! Looking forward to going back to stop for lunch on the way from the airport to Kaanapali. Been there every time we go to Maui. Since you have a Bear avatar I assume you are from somewhere around Chicago? If so, getting close to Mojito time on the beach!!!!!
