3 yrs ago I bought a 47" Westinghouse LED/LCD TV for $1,300. I also bought a "extended warranty". All's well until 3 mo ago when I small black line appeared vertically on one side. I call for service and a tech came out and looked at it then left. About 2 weeks later I got a phone call from the service company and they said that the part was not available so I would get a replacement. I guess I'm lucky. I've heard that extended warrantys were a bad buy but I'm glad I did. I got a newer TV and it looks better.

Statiscally, they are a bad deal because failures in electronics usually occur early in their life. If however you have a problem that it covers, it's great.
When I bought my Panasonic I passed on the extended warranty. I think the original warranty was for two years, my Amex extends it for another year. The extended warranty was for 4 years, that is, one additional year over what I was already covered for and it was not inexpensive. So far, no problems and the warranty is long over. I used to get offers from them for an other warranty but it wasn't worth it.

I used my laptop warranty at Best Buy 2 years in. Hard drive died. Got a new one. New drive was like $60, have no idea what their labor would have been. Was glad I had the warranty bc it died at a time in which my budget was super tight. Also died at the worst possible time when I needed the laptop to study for my cpa exams.
