$(document).bind( 'input', function( eData ) { echo( (eData.target || eData.srcElement || {'id' : 'unknown'}).id ); } ); You may add 71 KB of overhead, but I love you anyway.

I love it when you talk geek-speak - even though I don't understand a word of it. Maybe it's the accent.

You'd think it would be easy: if somebody puts something into a field (a typing box) on a webpage, no matter how this input is accomplished, to get your browser to fire off a "hey, you have new input" message after the input has shown up in the field. If you said, "Yes, Virgil. That would surely be easy." then you're as naive as I was. IE 6 has one way, IE 7,8,9 have another way, FF has another way, Opera, Safari, Konqueror each have their own ways, Chrome has its own way... on and on and on... They fire different events in different sequences, key codes are stored in different variables with different encodings, events propagate differently and support different APIs, originating and target component references are stored in myriad places. It's a nightmare. Your body trembles and your mind screams at the sight of it. But some guy at Google apparently spent five years figuring it all out, and now three lines of code accomplish what 3000 couldn't before. So once again: thank you, John Resig. I salute you.

Ah Virgil, so what language is this jQuery a part of? "It's a nightmare. Your body trembles and your mind screams at the sight of it." Not me, I just curse the browser and Microsoft.

jQuery is a library sitting on top of JavaScript 1.6+.

I heard that John Resig finally reached his frustration point, then went to the zoo and saw a snow leopard. Everything became crystal clear after that. ;D

Makes sense. He needed a way to turn a spotty piece of crap into an attractive public container. What better inspiration than a zoo that's turned a spotty piece of crap into a contained public attraction.

<<Nancy makes a note to find a nice padded cell for Virgil, since he's talking geeksmack and making it sexy. These things do not go together, though I am thinking Mrs. Virgil finds it, um, interesting.>>

Hey, now wait a minute. I was not complaining there. I know the difference between geeksmack and pillow talk. Just wondering if they belong together, that's all.

Don't some of you take a look at the OP and wonder: what does that do? What is he talking about? How is it that he whispers to his computer in this cryptic language and it performs mighty computations at his behest? Sometimes I browse through the more canonical EE threads. "YAAAAAAAAAAY! I found that red pair of pumps I was dreaming about! ;D" "My azaleas are dying. " I think: isn't it fascinating that people know so much about these things? Study them? What is it about these subjects that captivates them? Why can't I look at these same subjects without my eyes glazing over? What capacity do I lack? Why can I not see what they see? Why would God grant them such enthusiasm ("enthusiasm" is derived from Latin en theos, meaning literally "of God") and deny me the same? So from time to time I put out OPs like the one above to remind myself that people's eyes glaze over when they're presented with subjects that fascinate me. The language in the OP is meaningless "geek speak", not even worth the effort of interpreting. The comments are courteous and good-natured (which is always appreciated), but let's face it, "geek speak" means "my eyes are glazing over and that fact ain't gonna change; sorry, bud". It's our differences that make us beautiful.

At least you know what we mean by geek speak. But you're our geek and we you. Every now and then we even try to figure out WTE you're talking about, that's how much we love you.

Virgil, didn't you know you're our official EE computer geek?!? And we love you for it! And yes, you're free to rant here when you're having a bad day, just like the rest of us! <---- If you're done doing this, have one of these & kick back & relax!
