I'm a tad depressed today. Between the shooting of the Congresswoman--who works with a good friend of mine--my impending birthday , and general anger related to a research project I'm involved with, I just want to cry. Except that I'm not one of those kinds of women who cry. I pride myself on being a tough cookie. No amount of Baja Fresh or Starbucks is making me feel better.

Sounds like time for chocolate or wine!

Wine makes me sick to my stomach and I've eaten so much chocolate (and gummy bears, and smarties, and organic yogurt, and creamy tomato soup) already.
How 'bout I vent instead? Do you mind if I b!tch about the tarded biologist I'm working with?

how about Hagan-daz? ;D Seriously, sorry to hear about your troubles. And chocolate really does work! There a studies that show there is a chemical that effects your brain similarly to an orgasm... just saying... Chocolate contains tryptophan, a chemical in the brain that is used to produce the neurotransmitter, serotonin. High levels of serotonin stimulate the secretion of endorphins, and produce feelings of elation. Serotonin is found in the antidepressant Prozac, and the designer drug “ecstasy” produces its effects by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. So… antidepressants, illegal drugs, or a Hershey’s bar. You pick. www.science20.com/science_mom/top_ten_scientific_reasons_that_chocolate_is_the_world_s_most_perfect_food

No need to convince me to eat it Vent: As many of you know, I'm trying my darndest to get back in school and finish my PhD in physics. To make myself a more competitive candidate, I undertook this research project, working alongside a biologist and a physicist. Well, the biologist proposed a mathematical model, but lacked the math skills to be able to find the solutions. So, the physicist and I agreed to help the biologist find the solutions. Which we did. Both analytically--solving the system of equations exactly for some simple, symmetric cases--and numerically (using the computer...my largest contribution to this project). So what does the biologist do as physicist and I were doing all this work? GOES AND PUBLISHES THE MODEL WITHOUT US! Not only that, the biologist was apparently working with two other guys, getting them to do the exact same thing the physicist and I were doing. So this published paper--which does NOT have my name on it--has pretty much the exact same results the physicist and I came up with: more or less the same analytical solutions, and pretty much the same numerical stuff done. We're fuming... This whole time we've been working on this project--all the while staying in constant communication, sending updates and results--the biologist was working with another team! Months worth of work down the drain. You better believe I'm pissed.

Sounds good to me. I hate my coworkers some days too. And I carry tools that would be easy to hurt them with, I have to compose myself so I don't at times

How does what the biologist did even appear to be ethical to them or anyone else?

slice his "goods" off and feed them to the computer... see how that computes! That really does suck! Do you (and your partner here) have any recourse?

Oh, I hate people like that!!! Sorry Wish I knew how to make it better. I'm just mad. School is so important to me. I really thought getting my name on this paper would increase my chances of getting into a good PhD program, so imagine my surprise (and frustration and anger) when a supposed "colleague" publishes the work with someone else.... And the physicist and I weren't being slow or anything. We've done some great work, and done it thoroughly. So now we have to figure out how to salvage our project. Physicist and I have a couple addenda/extensions to the model, so that might be publishable. Also, and this is the part that's bothering me the most at the moment, not too long ago--before I found out the Biologist had published this stuff--I had emailed the Biologist with a good extension to the model (like, a very good addition, if I do say so myself). Biologist had commented that it was really good... ...so now I'm worried that Biologist is going to steal that and publish it before we can...

My GF is a research scientist working on her PhD so I do get (at least somewhat) what being published means to you. There's a whole hierarchy as to who gets listed as "authors" and in what order that I didn't have any knowledge even existed before I knew her.
If there's some sort of formal grievance/complaint system you can purse I would consider it.

And while I don't believe our work was passed off as someone else's--for example, the computer simulations in the paper produced nearly identical results, but I could still tell that the results were NOT mine--I find it very distasteful, to say the least, that Biologist didn't tell us about another group of people doing the exact same work.

Don't know if you'd be able to, but, if biologist does use it in the future, could you go after them for plagerism?

Do you know anyone in New Jersey? I do know people in New Jersey, but I won't publicly admit it Kidding... If you're asking if either Us or Biologist are in New Jersey, the answer is no. Biologist is up north, though.

And I certainly don't want to start my career out with a reputation of being a trouble-maker, you know? I'd really rather just get my name on one or two quality papers and move on with my life.

Yes, I can understand that. Win a battle and lose the war type thing.

I know I should be focusing all my energies getting this "extension" finished and submitted, but this whole recent development has bummed me out and left me lacking the motivation to get it done. That's why I was looking for a "pick me up," some sort of extra motivation to get me back on track... I mean, I've spent the past few MONTHS doing this work, all for naught. It's so frustrating.

I can't imagine going back and getting a PhD, I remember how tired I was of University when I graduated with my little old BSc in Engineering. Another 5 or 6 years, ugh.

I've been out of the workforce for about 4 years now--not entirely by choice, mind you--and so I feel like I'm entitled to pursue "something" for myself (e.g. a personal goal as a reward for giving up my career to do the SAHM thing). I've always wanted my PhD, and I'm determined to get it... Even if it means defending my dissertation on my deathbed, I will get my PhD... Even if I return to accounting afterwards, I WILL GET MY PHD!!!

Have I ever mentioned I suck at cheering people up?

Even just listening helps. I don't need the cheering up as much as the motivation to return to the project... I do appreciate the effort!

Well, the motivation is your PhD and it sounds like you want it. Take what time you need to feel pissed off about this and then get back to your target. It still sucks I know.
