TUCSON, Arizona (Reuters) – A member of Congress from Arizona was shot and seriously wounded on Saturday by a man who opened fire at a meeting she was holding in Tucson.
Gabrielle Giffords, a 40-year-old Democrat in her third term in the House of Representatives, was airlifted to a hospital in Tucson shortly after being shot in the head at point blank range at a Safeway supermarket in the Arizona city.
Ish. Being shot in the head is never good. My best wishes go out to her, her family and friends. Lots of nuts running around out there.

What a horrible tragedy! What is this world coming to? You don't get your way, or you don't like something, or somebody and you shoot them? My prayers and best wishes to her family, but mostly to her that there is a chance she will recover from this cowardly action. Update: OMG!! 13 people were shot and 5 have died already. The congresswoman is in surgery now. HORRIFIC!!!

Terrible story and what's even worse is reading the comments on some of the news websites. It's Palin's fault, Bush's fault, the Tea Party's fault and liberals fault. From what I've heard of the shooters writings, the guy is a total whack job as in truly psychotic. I dont think this has a thing to do with politics.

whoami, I hope you are right. We don't need any more divisive issues between the parties. This is a time for everybody to pull together and give these people, and their families, all the prayers and well wishes that they get through this as best they can.

Unfortunately, I have no doubt that different groups will find a way to use this to their advantage to reinforce their positions. Happens all the time. It really is scary how "out there" so many people views are based on the comments you read on news sites.

whoami - I had a long reply and then lost my connection. Darn it!
But in a nut shell - I agree with you about the comments. No matter the topic of articles or boards there are the Troll/crazies that just spew nonsensical verbiage every chance they get (all parties). The comment section use to be my favorite part of articles because I would learn so much from the posters and they'd take it many steps further than the article which was very educational. Now the "spewers" post their (obvious) uneducated nonsense there and I no longer read the comments section. I'm guessing people in their real lives cut them off so they now take it to the Internet and ruin it for the rest of us.

Jen, last I heard she was awake and having surgery. The judge, however, was killed.

I love ideological debate and discussion but you are not debating or discussing when your voice has a trigger-you are just trying to silence those with whom you disagree. This makes me so very sad, not just for the victims and their families, but for all of us who seemingly lost a country where we enjoyed the freedoms so much of world longs for.

More news that the shooter may not acted alone.
The Arizona sheriff helping investigate the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others says the gunman may not have acted alone.
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said at a news conference in Tucson on Saturday that authorities may have a photo of another suspect.
Dupnik says officials believe a suspect in custody may have come to the grocery store parking lot with another person, and that person was in some way involved.

Fortunately, our friend is okay, but she lost some friends and colleagues today and her boss is gravely injured. I've been sick to my stomach all day. Just heartbreaking.

Latest reports indicate there was NOT a lone gunman. An older guy is being sought! The poor victims. Speculation is the kid that got caught was duped into the act. I wonder if the PM types are considering this to be the start of the revolution?

I read somewhere online yesterday that this Jared kid was really cool for a while, until he go alcohol poisoning in 2006. After that, he turned weird.

My cousin is a very good friend to the congresswoman who was shot, in fact he now occupies her former seat in the house in AZ. He was on the news last night talking about the shooting, he was there at the hospital with her family. Such a senseless tragedy.

I just read a little more about the nine year old girl who was killed. I feel for all the families that lost loved ones and hope the community pulls together.

I keep reading more and more about this event. Her aide that was murdered went to school at the same school I did at the same time.... and we probably attended dinners together. The little girl that was murdered is between the ages of my two daughters. My older daughter just started Student Council and is fascinated by politics. I take them to political events like these so that they can get exposed to the political process. It makes me SO angry when I'm reminded that I can never again take them to an event like this and not wonder if some whack job will come out guns ablazing.
Meanwhile.. I still freaking hate Arizona and the fact that I have to visit it once a year. Their gun laws are insane. I will never feel safe there. Ever.

I don't know how much I trust most people with guns. Have you seen how people DRIVE? Now imagine all those sh!tty drivers you encounter having guns, too...

No thanks, TD. I prefer knives. People who use guns are cheaters.
