I purchased tickets for our family on July 5 for travel in August. We were charged $34.74 on each of the three tickets for Federal taxes. My understanding is that we are due a refund since congress did not extend these taxes.
Is this correct? If so, do you know which schedule I would attach to the 8849 to file for a refund (the airlines web site says to see the IRS for a refund).
Thanks in advance!

information is available at the IRS website for those who purchased an airline ticket on or before 7-22-11 for travel on or after 7-23-11... as this is "new" the IRS has yet to issue full guidance on this matter.... Congress creates such a mess with it's bickering.... www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=242812,00.html?portlet=6

Our local news just had a story about this issue. Most of the airline companies are keeping the federal tax $$ charged on the ticket, even 'tho the government isn't taking that money from the airlines. How unethical is that?

Thanks mwcpa! I have the receipts and will keep the boarding passes. Once we complete travel I will ask the airline for reimbursement. I will post an update in case this applies to anyone else. ;D

Heard the same on NPR a couple of hours ago.... sounds like the supposed "taxes" on the telephone bill.... it's just an extra fee we all pay and do not complain about..... as long as the big companies make a profit all is right in the world, or at least that's what many believe....
