I'm pretty sure banner ads and such can be added to this forum, it's just the forum is new and they haven't been added yet. But if this doesn't end up being a permanent forum with a lot of traffic, it wouldn't be worth it much anyway.

Actually, this is a very slippery slope. Proboards is free and moonbeam can take on as much or as little hassle as desired. I've been on forums where the second post of EVERY thread was from an ad-bot that the site owner used to make money for the site. It was a little irritating, but I know that bandwidth (for that site, anyway) wasn't free. Now, if we decided to upgrade to the ad-free, paid version of proboards, and maybe even get a proper domain, a few ads might be in order as long as they weren't intrusive. But I never liked how on MSN boards, the top 1/5th and left 1/5th of the screen was taken up by junk. I'm lucky that at work I have a widescreen monitor that does something like 1600x1080, but on my home laptop of 1280x800, life isn't as rosy

I like it like it is but would understand if banners were added. Someone has to pay for this and with the community growing so big it will use a lot of bandwidth.

Proboards allows you to buy "ad-free credits". $7 for every 50,000 page views. I could see burning through that very quickly. I don't think there are any other proboards features worth paying for.

I actually prefer the mode where no one is really profiting off our thoughts and opinions. I always thought it was kind of dumb that the MSN forums were "hosted" by people who never posted on them, for the most part....

I was on a travel board that got shut down by the sponsoring site. We migrated to a site similar to proboards and keep the board ad-free by periodically contributing some money. It's relatively painless; one guy sometimes picks up the whole cost (might be $50/year) because he claims he gets business from it. (He owns a map store.)
There's no free lunch. If we need to ante up something to keep ads out, I bet there are enough generous people in this group that we could do it.

The ads will appear at the top of the screen, at least that's where they are on another proboards board I'm a part of. I'm sure we all have enough willpower to ignore the ads at the top of the screen. Sometimes, proboards will match the ad to some recurring word in a popular thread. That can make things interesting.

I don't remember side ads on MSN but the top banner ones were driving me nuts the last month or so. The link I used to navigate was thisclose to the ads and if I misjudged by a faction of a millimeter, the Ford ads would open up. I love my Fords but since I'm not getting a new car for the next 5-10 years, it's wasted on me...
