My son is difficult to get involved. I generally have to set a minimum rule... you have to do one week of summer camp at least, or you have to sign up for one class/activity, or try this once... Daughter would do everything, any time, and i have to do the opposite with her... some gender differences, some just personality...

Oped, I think it's more personality than gender, personally. We have a "two-activity rule" (no more, no less, generally). One son wanted to do more, and another wanted to do less LOL. The son who wanted to do more had fabulous grades so we gradually let him take on anything and everything he wanted. The son who wants to do less, well, we still insist on two activities. It took a while for him to find his niche, but he has. Both of those boys got very involved in their Student Councils and that was free.
Until they get to late MS / HS I let them "hop around" though. They had to finish out the year at whatever they chose but if they weren't happy they could choose something else the following year. Some kids find a passion early in life, some find it later, some don't ever find it.
But I SO agree about not over-scheduling kids!
