Does anyone else have a problem spending $3.50 for 15 tiny Girl Scout cookies? I mean, I know it's for the good of the Girl Scouts and all but I could get a crap-ton of Oreo's for that money.
I love me some Samoas though, so I'll probably just suck it up and buy a box or three.
Am I just being stingy?

Sometimes, but I LOVE me some Thin Mints. I figure it is only once a year and if I am that tight then I wouldn't even be considering the purchase anyhow.

Wait! Haven't you budgeted for this expense?
Love Thin Mints and I budgeted for SIX boxes.

See, I think Thin Mints are a more worthwhile purchase anyway, because there's like, 30 of those in a box as opposed to the 15 Samoas. I know the cookies are different sizes and all but why can't they have an equal number of cookies in each box? I wouldn't have a problem spending $3.50 for 30 tagalongs, but $3.50 for 15 of them kinda hurts. Especially when I can absentmindly consume a whole box in an afternoon.

I can sling $10 - $15 to keep a group like that going. The cookies are a bonus.

Someone here at work just got done selling them a couple months ago - I didn't realize they would be selling again so soon. I thought they were a once-a-year kinda thing. And now that they're for sale again... well, how can you resist??

I don't find them to be terrible good. I mean, if someone offers me a cookie I might take it, but as a whole, Girl Scout cookies aren't worth it for me to buy.

I don't mind spending money on something I like (and pretty much if it has sugar in it - I LIKE!!), BUT I don't like spending money on anything that is disguised as something else. You want to raise money? No problem. Send me a request and an envelope. But don't mix that with cookies.

From the girl scout website:
So, either you are between two different councils, or someone is selling boxes that the troop had left over from the last sale.

Lena I think about this too - I've heard that the Girl Scouts really only get a few cents per box. Not sure if that's true or not, but it is a little disheartening. Those girls work so hard to sell the cookies and don't see as much profit from it as they should. But mmmm.... cookies...

I used to buy a couple of boxes of the thin mints every year when there was no cookie on the market like them. Now, they're nothing special to me so I'd rather throw them a couple of bucks and skip the cookies too. It would be cheaper for me cuz I can get cookies all the time for free (with coupons) and it's probably just as good in terms of money raised for them.

Yes, you're being stingy. Do I have a problem with paying $3.50/box for girl scout cookies? Absolutely not! Those things are ridiculously yummy! In fact, I look forward girl scout cookie season. I generally never carry cash on me, but I assure you I will run at break-neck speed to the nearest ATM in order to get out $40 to load up on cookies.

And...I think it is funny that they say Jan - Apr is the normal time, but some happen "as early as" Sept.
Is there a Girl Scout New Years that I'm not aware of, which puts September at the beginning of the year?

I always bought them from the neighbor girls because I was a girl scout and I don't mind supporting them. Although I guess I was always a sucker for the neighbor kids since I bought chocolate or candles for sports teams too. I haven't had any kids (or anyone else except Jehovah's Witnesses) come to my door since I moved. I guess we are too low density.

If they quit making them with high-fructose corn syrup I might think about buying them again. In the meantime, I'll just hand them a donation.

As a former Girl Scout, I always support the troops. And it doesn't hurt that I really love those Thin Mints!

I don't even think of it as "buying cookies". I remember selling them as a kid and I consider it a very small contribution to a good organization - with a small treat for me!

My wife was our daughter's brownie troop leader last year. After seeing all the planning, work, politicking, and crap that goes into cookie sales I'll probably just start handing them a few bucks when they come to the door from now on. The troop makes more money that way, and the cookies although fairly good are totally overpriced.

September is the beginning of the Girl Scout year... there is a nut sale in the fall and the cookies are sold in the spring. You could be confusing the two. If they opt to take prizes then their profit sucks, but if they opt for the profit it's actually a pretty good split.

GS Cookies are a scam. You'd be supporting the troop and that gs better by giving her a donation.
At $3.50, the actual troop makes less than .50.
The rest is kicked up the top of the organization.
It's a huge pyramid scheme.
I do buy them because I know a lot of really cute GS and my husband likes a few of the cookies, but I round up my check to $10 for two boxes so the girls get more. Every other fund raiser done for every organization my kids are involved with have a profit margin of 30-50%. They really use these girls to fund the org on a national level.

Adding, BS popcorn, same scam. The flyer says 70% of proceeds support BS locally, but that's B/S. The troop keeps like 17% by the time they're charged for shipping, prises, etc. A huge portion goes to state and national as well.

I think selling girl scout cookies to raise money is an extremely outdated idea. I feel bad for the girls, having to push product for corporate interest. I wish they could come up with a better fundraising idea. I strongly believe that most Americans do not need more cookies in their diets.
