psychobabbler Thanks so much! I'm trying to do the same thing as well.. but sometimes it's soo tempting. Eating out is so much easier.. But definitely takes a toll on my health and wallet! I agree with debthaven that you don't need the card therefore should eventually close it. However, I did read somewhere that they said you shouldn't close the card until you pay the debt down. Since the rate increase doesn't occur till september and you plan on paying it down by august. Are you able to just keep it open until you pay it down. Then close it? debthaven Thanks so much!! Congrats on the job!! -------------------------------------------------------------- Lately I've been terrible with my spending habits. May and June were really bad months. It has definitely slowed down my debt repayment a bit. I have a wedding to attend two weekends from now - so there's another hiccup in my debt repayment. It's tough not to be hard on myself and just keep reminding myself that at least my debt isn't going up and it's slowly going down and that's all that matters.

Vent/advice needed - DF and I want to buy new bedroom furniture. My 30th birthday is on Thursday and I hate the idea of having crappy dorm room-style furniture in my 30s! lol So we've been doing some shopping. We got a great deal on a new bed (headboard/footboard only, we have a good mattress). Regular price is $800 and we got it for $389! I can easily pay that right away, but the dresser/chest/night table set that we want is going to be about $2,000.
I really don't want to have to open a store credit card, even if we do get a no payment, no interest deal. I know we could have it paid off before interest kicks in, but I just don't want another card on my credit history that I open and then close right away. (We have done this three times in the past 2-3 years). But stores nowadays don't offer layaway. I suggested to DF that we buy a piece here and there as we can, but he's worried that the set will be discontinued before we can buy all the pieces we want.
Thoughts?

Babbler-good for your home cooking! I have done what DH has said and overcooked. We usually take it for lunch the next day but we have also frozen some things for later on. I love that you are finding it a stress release! It is sometimes hard to eat breakfast at home when there are many options out there. I know that making my own coffee etc really cuts the costs but I still treat myself occasionally. I like the idea of the ready-to-eat meals too... but if you have enough stored in the freezer of your own making, you will be good to go anyhow!! As to your credit card, what about paying it off like planned then cutting it up and letting it expire naturally? I have done that with cards... gotten one for the very low interest rate, transfered the money, paid it off then never used the card again. (I actually have no idea what this did to my credit since I am very shameful and haven't done my own credit check. For some reason, there is an error on my information on my account and I have to basically give DNA samples along with my shoe size to get it changed... I totally haven't done it yet for the reason of laziness!)
Z's-I don't think it matters how much you pay down as long as the amount keeps going downward, that is a good thing!
Idawn-We have also done the buy now/pay later/get home and set up the account immediately to have money start coming out weekly so it is paid off before the interest kicks in... I can't remember if you were looking at a house in the next year or so but if you aren't, I don't think this will affect you adversely?? (anyone out there know differently?) I would maybe ask the store how long this has been out/do they see it being discontinued? I would also do an estimate on how fast you could save the $. If it is a relatively short time, then 1 piece at a time would be fine. If it is a couple of years, that might make things look different.

Idawn (At the risk of getting shot for suggesting this ... do you have a low-interest open CC you can put it on, with the plans of paying it off quickly? Could you buy the most expensive piece and then put a "deposit" on the rest? I can't answer about the store card because I really don't know the credit ramifications for that since it's not the same here.
Great news here!!! Thanks for the juju because DD got her Baccaulareat, with Honors! WHAT a relief!
AND, the business school gave me three more hours today! Perfect timing, since now we know DD is indeed going to college in the fall.

Yay! Congrats DH and your DD's great success!
We haven't decided what to do about the furniture situation yet. We're not looking to buy a house for another few years, so I guess another no interest, no payment isn't the worst thing in the world.
As for putting it on a current CC, we have three open ones - two with a high-enough limit that I could put it on one of them, but they both have high interest rates. The third has a low interest rate, but also a low limit. I find doing this is safer for my spending (if I have a low interest, high balance card, I'd be tempted to do something bad). Although I don't hate the idea DH - I'd rather pay a few dollars in interest than open another cc.
We did buy the bed and that may be enough to keep me happy for another few months and then maybe we can just pay for the rest in cash. I'm now of the mindset of not rushing into any big decision. Wait and see!
i don't think I said welcome back to babbler, so welcome back!

Hello everyone ... I am very excited to join this group and ready to battle my debt head on. I've got a long way to go but, instead of focusing on the negative, I want to focus on the positive. It's debt and it's something I can manage if I put my mind to it. Glad to have your support with this. I hope that I am doing this correctly. Here it goes ... facing reality now.

Welcome JonnieCash (great nic!) You have a couple of quick wins there! Can't wait to see your progress!
El Thank you for your post about DD!
I have been really bad lately ... the 3K we were holding back has just evaporated, as I feared it would. The garden clean-up, the hammock, a 500e water bill, the last vacation rental payment, a 600e repair to one of the rentals. Ugh. And too much eating out these days, because all the kids were away and it was just the two of us, we had friends from out of town, our wedding anniversary, a bunch of lunch dates with friends I don't see often.
I have to admit that I really regret buying the last rental. For seven or eight years I have been "pushing" us and making it hard on us. Frankly I've been too "ambitious". The 200e "raise" I gave us is more than eaten up by two new life-insurance policies and rising prices. So I've been bummed about money lately.
My next "win" is just 54 months away, LOL! But I regret putting us up against the wall like this.

Welcolm JohnnieCash! Whats your plan for tackling the debts? The 2 loans should be pretty quick (especially loan 2). How much are you able to put into the debt each pay?

Wow, thank you so much to everyone for the welcome. I feel better already for joining. You are all very inspiring.
Someone asked me where I was from (sorry, after reading all the messages, I forgot who it was I am replying to). I am from Ontario, Canada.
Another person asked what my plan was for tackling debt. I suppose, the first course of action is - stop spending. lol In all seriousness, I will attempt to pay down the highest interest rates and small loans first. Interest rates are high. I wish I could get them lowered. I have two jobs to try to manage.
Any tips anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. I see that some people have managed to pay off huge debts in such a short amount of time. I would love to do that but, I'm thinking that's a stretch.

johnnie-"i wish i could get them lowered" Have you called your credit card company and asked? If the person first on the line says "no", ask to speak to someone above them... supervisor etc. If they say no, ask to speak to someone else. They will quite frequently tell you "no" at first but if you start moving up the ladder, they might just say "yes". It has worked for many people in the past. What about a consolidation loan if you have lots of high interest cards? Just a thought..

Johnnie - I agree with FFinBC - definitely try calling the cc companies or seeing about a consolidation loan.
The one big thing I do recommend is setting up automatic payments. When you know that you HAVE to have that money in the bank to pay the bill, you'll avoid spending it. It's a lot easier to make regular payments rather than putting money towards the debt whenever you think about it or have extra cash.
You can do an automatic payment for the minimum payments on all the loans except for the one with the highest interest, which you would put more towards. HTH
