I'm literally in tears for HappyCat LOL! I have some good news of my own. Y'all know my "out-laws" (ex ILs) have very generously offered to pay for half of DD's college tuition (she starts in September). My MOL left a message last night saying she's surprised not to have heard from me, don't I have to pay the school something to reserve DD's place for September? So I just called her back and said yes, I've paid 1400e so far, but none of it is tuition: 1050e for uniforms and kitchen materials, and 350 registration fees. She said, "Are you stupid or what?!" (sounds bad but she said it very affectionately). So she's mailing me a check for 700 to cover half those fees. And clarified that she meant paying for half of DD's college COSTS, not just tuition fees. She rocks. ETA: This means I have to pay 325e / mo starting in July, for the next three years (and I'm sure tuition will go up slightly every year).

Thanks Zs! You'll get there too, I promise! I hope those reimbursements come in quickly! As soon as you knock off CC2, you'll have more money to tackle CC4. Minnesota thank you for tracking us! Amazing, nearly 1 million! And that's without RadiationMama LOL. I hope she's doing well. ETA: If you look at my signature you will see that I did not do the wise thing, I ended up finally posting that boiler loan check. It's now scheduled to be paid off in Feb 2012. I'm still hoping to pay it off by the end of 2011. And I won't be "snowballing" that payment. After coming up to four years here, I just want the "wiggle room"!

Dilemma - Since my knee surgery in December, I haven't been able to wear heels. Unfortunately, 90% of my shoes are heels and 90% of my pants are hemmed to be worn with heels. So for the past few months, I've been wearing one pair of knee high boots that are flats with just one pair of skinny pants that can be tucked in to said boots. I can also wear skirts and dresses with these boots. Unfortunately or fortunately, the weather here is finally starting to warm up and my boots are going to be put away. Which now means I'm down to the same skinny pants and skirts or dresses with the two pairs of flat shoes that I own.
My problem is this - I have a lot of clothes. Always have (one reason why I have the debt I have), so I like having choices and variety in what I can wear. So I have these clothes hanging in my closets and I can't wear most of them! They either don't go with the skinny pants I can wear or it's pants that are hemmed to be worn with heels. Obviously I know that in a few months, I can go back to wearing my heels, but in the meantime, I'm bored of what I can wear and I want to buy new clothes!!!!
So, how do I stop myself from buying new clothes to tide me over for the next few months? (I'm hoping it'll be a few months, but it could be longer). I've been doing this for 3.5 months and my patience is wearing thin! If I go shopping, I fear I'll be racking up some more credit card debt!

Idawn Could you give yourself an allowance and try to find a couple of pieces you can wear now that you would also be able to wear later? Could you use your "fun money"? I understand needing a few new items, but please don't go overboard and please "shop smart": either sales, or stores that are "cheap and cheerful" (like H and M) or thrift shops (I have to admit I don't use thrift shops but plenty of WIRs do)? Do you have any friends who you could trade a few pieces with?
Hope this helps! I think you should set a realistic limit and try to stick to it. You don't want to undo all your fantastic progress! It's only for a few more months.
ETA: Other thought. You say you have a lot of clothes. Do you have two pairs of similar pants? If so you could re-hem one of the two to wear with flats.

ldawngirl I ALWAYS want to buy clothes! LOL. So I know what it feels like. It's an itch you just have to scratch!! This is what I do and I find it helps me a lot, I plan a shopping trip and take note of things I would like to buy, also take note of the prices. At the end, I usually choose ONE item that I can purchase. I put the rest in a "wish list". Usually when I check back on my wish list, I find either I no longer want it. Or you can always wait till next month. You should have something in your budget for clothes - it may not be big, however buying just that one item usually satisfies my craving As well, somethings to note, if you buy things at GAP or its sister companies (ie. Old Navy and BR) if you wait, they usually have sales. Just make sure you sign up for their email list. I find they come out with 30% or 40% off events once every few months. I've learned not to buy things at regular price there Hope this helps!! Remember you can't really depreive yourself or else you'll binge!

Idawn, another thought, since spring is coming up. What about a couple of skirts? DD never wore skirts but after her knee surgery a few years ago I picked up a couple of beautiful mid-length gauze skirts. (OK she was 14 LOL). She wore them to death for about four weeks, then I passed them onto a neighbor's DD. The advantage to skirts is that you can wear them with either heels or flats. Just a thought!

You guys may remember that I used to write a column for a mag in Oz. They pay so badly I haven't billed them in two years because I wanted a lump sum payment. I did it because I loved having my own column.
Long story short, I finally billed, the cow promised to pay me, and didn't. Despite the fact that after all her begging I agreed to charge her 50% of the going rate.
She said she changed her mind, I hadn't billed her for two years, I obviously didn't need the money, so wouldn't be paid. Mea culpa, I had promised to bill once a year.
But I freely admit, I went MENTAL on her. I admit I stalked her on email and on the phone (the time difference was my friend). I copied her emails to her old editors, her new editors, my friend who got me the gig.
She finally told me she would pay me in full if I promised to go away. I told her fine, as long as I get copies of my columns. She said they sent them, I never received them. She said they came back because the address was wrong. And that she sent them again. Give her a break, she is human, she got the address wrong again. Once again I never received them.
I simultaneously begged for copies from her old editor. Who sent them to me at her own expense. Then the publisher sent her old editor a REALLY nasty email (and left a REALLY nasty phone message) saying that the old editor had NO business sending me my own articles without the publisher's permission.
So the old editor quit, I quit, my friend who found out the publisher illegally published her article of four years ago wasn't on staff so she didn't quit but she told the publisher that if she ever publishes anything else of hers again without permission they will meet in court.
I did get final payment from her ... 900e net for 2.25 YEARS worth of columns / articles.
Coincidentally, I also got notification today of how to get paid for my new freelance gig for the French government's science body ... 250e net for ONE article. It's only a trimestrial, but still, I'm THRILLED.

Shoutouts!
InDebtYogini- Wow, 60% paid off, amazing! Glad things are going so well for you. I hope the trend continues! debtheaven- Great news about your ex-MIL stepping up! I’m glad you stuck to your guns and got paid for your old work. Good for you!! ZsDebt- Congrats on your new 0, it looks fabulous on you! You’re getting closer and closer to hitting that $20k paid off mark as well! Idawngirl- If you have so many clothes are there any you’d be willing to part with? I have no idea if you have the same thing or something similar in Canada, but in the States we have craigslist, where people buy and sell just about anything and there are no fees. You could sell a couple items that you don’t wear anymore and use that money to buy an outfit or two to tide you over.

Idawngirl - I too have a real problem with clothing. It sounds like what you really need are a new pair of spring/summer shoes. I tend to control my shopping by using flash sales sights like hautelook.com, ruelala.com, ideeli.com and beyondtherack.com. The sales are usually 60% or more off and they sell out quickly so you can't always get everything you want. I buy a good percentage of my clothes and shoes from sites like these because it's good quality stuff for very nice prices!

UPDATE
ldawngirl: 4/05/11 | $8,789 (1/4/10 | $27,993 | IU10)
$19,204 (68.6%) paid off
Coming up on $20,000 paid off! We've been bad about our spending lately, so I have to start keeping better track of it. And I've got to stop getting breakfasts and/or lunches at work! I need to be more accountable to myself about that kind of spending, 'cause while it's not adding to the debt, it's taking away from other things I should be spending on.
Classes for the winter semester are finished and I did well in both courses! One was just a pass or fail and I obviously passed, and the other I got an A in. I have a bit of a break now before the spring semester starts up next week and I'm only taking one course, so it'll be more manageable.

Thanks for the great suggestions on my clothing dilemma! I'm thinking some new shoes might be in order as indebtyogini suggested. I have a bunch of skirts that I can start to pull out of the closet now that spring is here, so I can probably avoid buying a ton. I might look at getting a couple of summer dresses, but that shouldn't be too bad. And like DH said, I do have several pairs of black pants, so I'll see about hemming one pair so I can wear them with flats. Thanks!

Idawn So glad we could help! And congrats on another great update! You can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel! It's understandable that you "lighten up" somewhat, but hopefully seeing that light within reach will help keep you focused! Minnesota I saw your fabulous update on the MW thread, congrats to you!!! What a milestone! We got word from our RE lawyer that the seller agreed to the 3K reduction in price (since he hasn't done the building reno) so she thinks we will be closing early May. Also, the RE agent wrote the contact up badly so we were paying closing costs on her fees, which should never have happened. We could have contested it at the time but we didn't want to have to rewrite the contract and start from scratch. But since the contract has to be rewritten anyway to reflect the 3K decrease in price, that was one of our conditions. So it looks like we will be saving about 3750! I have no idea of whether the reno will start soon or not. So I plan to put 500e towards the boiler loan in my pursuit to get it paid off ASAP (and lose that 155 monthly payment) and save the rest for the building reno. To be honest, part of me is happy that this purchase will actually happen, and part of me is regretful because I would have used that DP to pay EVERYTHING off. I keep trying to tell myself that at 51 and 54 we still need to "stretch" our financial goals. DH and I have named that new studio "our last stretch" LOL.
