I am very excited about my update this month as soon as everything posts on Tuesday (probably). I paid $1850 (instead of $1100) to my mortgage and put some extra money in my savings account. It really feels good to be in control of my finances again and to have a solid plan for the next year.

Update Loan | Starting | Current | Paid Off | CC1 | $5,640 | $6,189 | ($549) | CC2 | $4,251 | $5,139 | ($888) | CC3 | $944 | $349 | $594 | CC4 | $700 | $0 | $700 | CC5 | $480 | $0 | $480 | Car | $190 | $0 | $190 | Totals | $12,205 | $11,677 | $528
YoungGrasshopper: 1/14/11 $11,677.02 (10/7/09 $12,204.58 S530, S928) I lost the zero I had on cc3. We got back from our vacation to find that our smaller dog was not only sick (turns out an infection started before we dropped her off at the dog sitter's) but had also lost 3lbs which is a lot for a 17lb dog, you could see a couple of her ribs outlined on her coat. I had to charge the emergency visit, tests and meds to the credit card but I don't mind since she is a lot better and gaining back the weight. A thank you to Elderkind, Suzwantstobefree and Speechchick for your kind words of advice and encouragement. My request for a credit increase to cc1 to transfer from cc2 was declined and I decided against a debt consolidation loan since they would cancel my cards. I was did get a collateral free 4k line of credit at 5.45% which will be an EF backup till I get one built up again, then I'll do a balance transfer. I have not finished writing down my 2011 goals or how they'll be accomplished but I'm taking the 1st step and removing the credit cards from my wallet. It is scary since they lend a sense of security in case of an emergency, but one look at my statements show I need to re-evaluate what an emergency is!

It is scary since they lend a sense of security in case of an emergency, but one look at my statements show I need to re-evaluate what an emergency is! I leave one in my purse but not in my wallet. It reminds me that I really have to "need" something that would require me to use the credit card. I don't know why, but it gives me a sense of security knowing that it is there if I need it. Sorry about the sick dog. Hope she is feeling better

Well, Murphy hit but to be honest IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT WORSE. My daughter hit a bridge that had a lot of gravel on it and it threw her into the woods. SHE IS TOTALLY FINE. We bought the car "a 2001 mustang for $3000. It was a GREAT deal. Super nice. Well, its totalled and I have only made one payment on it. I know insurance will go up. That really doesn't bother me. She is safe and sound and could have been killed. They found car parts 10 feet up in trees. I am nervous because the patrol officer said the gravel didn't have any play in the accident and my daughter was not speeding, she was paying attention and said she hit the gravel on the bridge and lost control and then over corrected. Its a waiting game to see what they offer. I have a $1000 deductible to help my insurance cost. Full coverage. The biggest thing I think is we will never find another DEAL like that. BUT PRAISE SHE DOESNT HAVE A SCRATCH ON HER.

I'm BAAAACK! Long story short...the last year has been a challenge, financially and I've regressed a bit. New town, New job, New relationship. Lots of changes, but I'm in a GREAT place now! Went from $0 CC debt to $8k. BLEH! Time to get rid of that monkey on my back again! On a positive not, the SL has been steadily making progress and I'm still driving my paid off car, which will hopefully last a while longer! I had a cash Christmas, which was great, but time to refocus! Here's my newest update: DEBT | Start (5/16/07) | Previously (2/19/10) | Current (1/15/11) | Difference | CC | 2,442.54 | - | 8,037.84 | +8,037.84 | Car | 7,985.21 | - | - | - | Student Loans | 34,701.35 | 30,437.72 | 28,999.56 | -1,438.06 | Personal Loan | 13,588.86 | - | 1,712.74 | +1,712.74 | TOTAL | 58,717.96 | 30,437.72 | 38,750.24 | +8,312.52

My employer dropped the 401K match from5% to 4% this year. But they're still matching separately on the over 50 catch-up amount, so I'm getting an 8% instead of a 10% total match.
I want to complain, but I know I have it much better than most, so I know I shouldn't. That's VERY frustrating, no?

Red Ruby It feels weird saying "Congrats on the car wreck!", but any wreck that everyone walks away from is a good wreck.
Everyone Else Good updates or glad to see you back, as appropriate!

Has anyone else received a letter from Compass Bank? Apparently my 'free' checking account is about to become an $8.95/mo account unless I add direct deposit or keep a $1500 balance. Grrr. And wouldn't you know that we just closed the credit union account that it replaced in December. Time to go bank shopping again?
RedRuby - I'm glad that your daughter is okay!

Ready4achange: Welcome back to the boards! It looks like you have a couple of debts that you can pay off quickly and an awesome goal to have everything paid off by the end of the year!
Nasa: Glad that you are able to move into the house in March and out of your in-laws!
Elderkind: Happy to hear that things are better at your house and that you have hot water. Life must have been miserable for a few weeks with that!
Suz: I agree with you that when we take control of debt, it makes for a better outlook on things.
younggrasshopper: sorry to hear about your dog. Hope everything is going to be okay with her. We all have setbacks, but having a goal to get back on track is critical. Do you have a budget that you can use for 2011?
speech: great update! You’re going to be winning your race soon!!
redruby: You’re right---your DD is very lucky! I did almost the same thing when I was 16 and I know my parents were scared and thankful at the same time. Keep looking for a car; there are a lot of deals still out there so you may get lucky again.
tri2bfree: Welcome back and glad that you found us! What is your plan for tackling your debt?
deepintx: Nice update!
cathysmom: I just heard today that a lot of the banks that had been offering free services are now charging because of the loss of revenue tied to the credit cards and debit cards. More than likely, there will be many others who now have to pay or hold minimum balances.
Swordguy: I agree with you…..while it is frustrating that the match dropped, you still have a good program. How is the job going --- don’t you have a contract that is up soon?

So that 2% we are getting back? It resulted in my paycheck being less than $7 more. I'm not even recording it in my budget and I'll have a $7ish floater in my account to play with. Hmm....what can I go out and get with less than $7? A box of Luna bars at Target. 2 gallons of gas. A meal at a fast food restaurant.
RedRuby: Whew! What a close call! Glad to hear that she is ok!
Nice see so many faces showing up on here.

Speechchick...interesting about the "2%"...my check showed noticeable increase @$40 while DH's was only $3. i was thinking DH must have a new or increased withholding on something else & will b interested to see the actual paystub shows. S'pose some employers processed the reduction wrong?

Suz: Good job on the extra toward the mortgage. What is your #1 goal for 2011? YoungGrasshopper: keep fighting the good fight. It took me a struggle of 6 months to get EF to $1000, but it will be so worth it for you when you get there. SO glad your little dog is recovering. My Max is @ 19 lbs and recently dropped 3 lbs to 16 and it's a scary look. With the EF growing even slowly i covered his vet bill almost $500 without sacrificing a good paydown for the month. The EF is a huge safety net. Speechchick: congrats on the $3969 & a future of NO MORE INTEREST! It's great watching you run for the finish line and i eagerly anticipate getting to do that later this year. Tri2Bfree: Welcome Back! You're sure right : "a lot of changes but you're in a great place now" RedRuby: That's the best news of all that your DD survived the car wreck with no injuries. DeepinTX: Congrats on that great paydown & your lovely party hat. Ready4aChange: WELCOME back! ReduceMyDebt & Elderkind: sure enjoy your shoutouts. Sadly, navigating this board to participate in shoutouts seems like having a hand tied behind my back...can't even figure how to insert a sad face there...so RATS!

Update! Pay-No-Interest 01/15/11 $130,200.00 (5/07 $369,884.00) PB #133 Difference from the total debt owed: $239,684.00 %Difference from the total debt owed: 64.8% Amt paid from previous update: $3,337.60 Original mortgage amount: $188,000 Amount of my mortgage paid off: $57,800.00 % of mort. paid: 30.7% Suz: Congrats on paying off such a huge chunk off of your mortgage payment! That has to feel good! I can relate to your CC situation, DH and I took a ski trip over Christmas and I'm seeing the bill for next month. We budgeted it in but we will definitely tighten up from now on. RedRuby: I'm glad that your daughter is ok! That sounds like a scary situation. I hope you can find another car for her and at a good price! Tri2BFree and ReadyforaChange: Welcome back! We are happy to have you! Elderkind: I can't believe you have had such problems with your LL - and someone who was supposed to be a friend! I'm a LL and actually the hot water heater went out on the day before Christmas Eve in my rental house. I didn't get the message from my property manager until Christmas Eve day and so my poor tenants had to wait until the next week to get it fixed. I paid for a hotel room for them to take their 3 kids to get a shower since they had to go so long without hot water. I don't understand what your LL motives were - when I have good tenants, I try to treat them well! I'm glad you have hot water and things are working out. I think it is a good idea that you keep looking around. So, DH and I have decided to remodel our downstairs bathroom. We are moving our washer and dryer into it, adding a utility sink, new counter top, lights and cabinets. We are doing all the work ourselves to reduce the costs. I'm so lucky DH can do basic plumbing and electrical work. He had me tear out the sink - that was pretty fun! I hope everyone is doing well and has a great weekend!

Sadly, navigating this board to participate in shoutouts seems like having a hand tied behind my back...can't even figure how to insert a sad face there...so RATS! Forwardwego: actually, this board is easier to navigate than the MSN boards once you get used to it. Instead of clicking "quick reply" or whatever it says on the bottom of the page, click "reply" at the bottom of the last message. It will bring up a page that has smileys that you can insert Also on that page, if you scroll down, you'll see all the posts from the page you were looking at...makes it easy to reference You can then preview your post to see if you like it and then post it. [glow=red,2,300]Just be sure to type your message or word between the two sets of brackets ([blahblah] TYPE HERE [/blahblah][/glow]. OR you can highlight what you want and then click the effect and it will happen as well. Thanks for all the kudos...I can't believe that my big card, started at a balance of over $16k, is almost a ZERO! I wish I could take all of you out for a celebration once I'm at $0!

ReduceMyDebt: My contract is over on June 30th, so I still have some time. I should have the CC and most of the PFCU Loan paid off by then, leaving only the car payment. Hopefully I'll know in 2 months whether the contract is over or renewed. We'll see!

Good Sunday Morning You can also do a sad face by inserting the : ( without the space between and the same with the smiley : ). There is also a smiley chart that is on the left side when you do the reply or the right side on the quick reply that you can use to insert smiley's beyond what you see on the reply "add smilies" section. Forward my two goals for this year are pretty agressive - I would rather aim high and fall short then to aim low and achieve it. 1. pay down my mortgage to less than $150K (which is a $13K paydown). 2. Total debt reduction by Jan 1, 2011 - $50K. If everything goes as planned I can get #1 goal. If I am able to be a little more frugal then I can do #2. My plan for the mortgage pay down is to take 1/2 my rent check and make an additional paydown each month and the other 1/2 goest to savings. I am doing the same with any "found" money such as an escrow refund that I am expecting and then any tax refunds or bonuses that I get. The only thing that will get in my way is if I don't get a rent check Darn holiday is going to make me wait an extra day to post my paydown

SuzWantsToBeFree: Doesn't it feel good to be able to save a little each month! ;D The day I could start putting a little back each month was the day I knew I was definitely going to win my race with debt! YoungGrasshopper: Happy to hear that your furbaby is doing better now! SpeechChick71: Great Update! That 2% isn't near what I thought it would be, LOL! ;D RedRuby: Wow! Wonderful news that DD was not harmed! I am sorry to hear about the car but the rest will sort itself out! Tri2BFree: Welcome Back! DeepInTX: Fantastic Paydown! SwordGuy: Sorry to hear about the drop in the 401K match! That is VERY frustrating news! Cathy'sMom: Many thanks for the info on Compass Bank! ReduceMyDebt: It is wonderful to have hot water and a shower again! The place is looking better and I am having the place professionally cleaned (the walls and floor are coated with sheetrock dust) at my cost since the landlady is such a turd but at least I will feel like the house is clean again! ForwardWeGo: LOL, SpeechChick has all the moves when it comes to this board! She can get you where you want to be! ;D PayNoInterest: Wonderful Update! Thank you for your kind words about the housing issue! I can't understand why my LL is being so rotten about the house unless she wants me out so she can raise the rent again. I have heard a few other things about her recently (involved past abuse of a grandchild) that I did not know before which have really solidified my decision to end the friendship. I am so wishing that you could be my LL instead of what I have right now. Good luck on your remodel! Sounds like you and DH will knock it out in no time! SuzWantsToBeFree: Your 2011 Goals are lookin' good! I hope everyone is enjoying a long weekend! We are getting much needed rain here in Texas and DF is in bed with Bronchitis but other than that things are definitely looking up! ;D

younggrasshopper - I think you've done the right thing removing your credit cards from your wallet. Obviously, if you are travelling or something, you'll want to have them with you - but when you are home, it is pretty rare to have an emergency crop up that is so time-sensitive that you couldn't go home and get your card if you needed it. A sick puppy definitely counts as an emergency in my world, but I bet your vet would understand if you needed to go grab your CC before you could pick up the patient. I should follow your example on this one - I keep one card in my wallet for when I travel for work - except that I only rarely travel for work.
redruby - I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's accident, but I think swordguy had it right - congratulations are in order for any accident where everyone walks away.
Welcome back tri2befree! That is a lot of change to cope with in one year, but I'm glad that the end result is a positive for you. What is your plan for getting back on track? (Sorry - I've been reading books on goal setting and lifestyle changes, so I keep pushing everyone to commit to specifics)
The party hat suits you, deepintx - congratulations!
Sorry about the reduction to your 401k, swordguy. Yes, many employers don't offer any match, but I think it would feel differently if you were to start a new job with the knowledge that the employer didn't offer a match vs. having your current employer rescind a promise it had made to you. It is a small reduction, and I am sure you will find a way to bolster your own savings efforts to make up for it. But I give you leave to complain about it.
Great tip about the reply page, speechchick. I knew about the handy reply box with the text formatting options, but I hadn't realized that you could scroll down to see all of the recent responses. Certainly makes shout outs a lot easier!
A $50k payoff for 2011 would be huge, suz, but I have no doubt that you can achieve it if you set your mind to it.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend!

I am so sorry to the captains. I tried to copy and past the table and it didn't work for me. I am not sure what I did wrong. Hopefully in that mess you can see that I paid off a grand total of $132.20!!! But we discussed before that I am not considering this an update for 2011 since this was all from 2010. So now until Jan. 2012 there will not be any increases in totals.
Murphy came to visit us too. He sure gets around. Our furnace wasn't heating the way it should during our snowstorm, so we had the guy come out and look at it but of course there was ice in the heat pump so he has to come back when there is no ice. So far it has cost $117 just to have him come out. Also this month will have to take out of savings for the HOA dues before the end of the month. I have part of it in this month's budget but they decided that they were not going to let people have 3 months to pay it off so it will come out of savings. RedRuby - I am so thankful that your daughter walked away without a scratch. My DS did that when he was in his second year of college to a car that I inherited (1973 Corvette) and we were glad that he only sprained his wrist. There will be another car. Swordguy - That was a very generous match. Most companies only match the first 6% and nothing special with the over 50 amount. I am assuming that you work contract work, if you know 3 months ahead that your contract is not renewed, you will have time to find another job to go to, won't you? My DH works with lots of contractors and that is the way it works for those working for his company. Speech - you are so close to be debt free! I am jealous. Welcome back to all the returnees, we are glad that you are joining us. If you have off on Monday, have a great day and if you have to work, only 5 more days to the weekend!!! ;D

Muffy - you know in the past if Murphy visited me, it would be a great excuse to really mess up the whole month. You only went up a little over $100!!! I think that despite the fact that you went up, it is just a very minor set back!!!
Swordguy - my company doesn't match at ALL!!! I would love to have any part of my 401K matched but I do make a lot of money with the company I work for so I guess that is the trade off.

Thanks speechchick, much easier when the last msg reply button is used. Now i'm not or blue. Okay now how do you make a phrase scroll, is that the slanted M? Nasagreenglad things r working out on the homefront, and hope you're feeling well. Time can sure fly when you have a lot to do before a baby arrives . Nice job pay-no-interest with 239K paid!!! looks like a QUARTER MILLION to be accomplished by your wirr anniversay in May WOW , and under 100K owed before end of year ;D cathysmomBOA started fees too but they will waive them if you go "paperless". So far we don't pay a fee because we agreed to have auto savings of $25 or more to a BOA savings acct. Maybe Compass would do that? LOL, SpeechChick has all the moves when it comes to this board! She can get you where you want to be ! You said it Elderkind and so glad you've got modern plumbing again Thanks again Speech for helping me find the tools for "shouting out" here. Agree w/ CraftySarah AN 8% match is good, but a disappointment when you used to get 10%, brief whining understandable. Awesome goals Suz kind of a "50's" theme

Agree with freshnewday & others who've felt compelled to express gratitude for the power and strength of the WIRRs (southern branch..yahoo!). Hope my 2 ladies i subbed for pay me quickly so i can put that little dab of $ to work...you'd think having a good paydown would hold me for a while but it just makes me antsy.

So the second half of the month I didn't pay off a whole lot. Lots of good things happening, though. First, I have goal number two complete! I got the job! It's full time and $10.5/hour. I start tomorrow morning. I am completely excited. I've created a new budget so that I can complete goal one. Goal four should get done by June, if not earlier. Any tips on buying a house? Second, I finally started paying on the principle of SL4! Huzzah! AND with this new job I can start paying the actual amount! I no longer have an emergency fund, we found out the car we got on auction would have taken too much money to repair So we cashed our mini EF, gathered up $500 that was going to go to saving for a house and loans then bought ourselves a fairly good car for $1500. We needed it by Saturday because the car that we were borrowing needed to be taken back, so that was a couple of stressful days. But it's all good now. Because I have a job that's in the field I went to school for. And a car that works. And I have completed a goal for the year. I'm close to finishing two more that aren't money related and it makes me feel accomplished. So hopefully each month I will be leapfrogging! Anyways, I'll need to build up that $1000 EF again before I start saving for the House again. I should be able to do that quickly. DH and I made a list of things that are must haves and things that are wants, how far away from the base we want it, and our price range (this will be more finalized once we get a mortgage approval).

[shadow=red,left,300]Forwardwego:[/shadow], click on the button with the "M" on it....that will make it scroll. I keep trying to get the shadow and can't make it happen. And where is everyone getting all the other smileys? The puking one? the high 5, etc? Oh wait....if you're reading this, hit reply, look left to "view all smilies"...I think I found my favorite:
