I know I just updated but I had the wrong amounts on these 2 debts. Of course I had already updated my charts so it was just easier posting the change now. *Edit..I just paid 12 cents on a loan so that I could have an even 6K paid down from this race

Not a lot of change, but all the payments and statements have dropped for the month, so I thought I should update the end of the month totals. Budget is still going good. Looking like I will have a few extra bucks budgeted but not spent at the end of the month. If so, I'm going to throw it at the debt again.

Woohoo, another $1,000+ gone! Also, we are moved into our house! The closing was while I was gone, so we are still catching up a little on house stuff. It is going to take a couple of months for everything to even out as we figure out how the budget will work. Propane is EXPENSIVE! It looks like next month I will hit the $50k paid off. New smiley, here I come!

Making a little progress. Moving slow but steady. I have made a couple of payments but they haven't updated yet so I left them at the balance they were last month. On the bright note, I am under the $13,000 mark! Yay!

I'm posting my update a little early. I wanted to get it done two weeks ago (and then do our board-wide update) but I had a busy weekend: I bought a new car. I've been sort of shopping around and couldn't pass it up. I got rid of my Jeep, sadly, and now I'm driving a VW. I've only ever had Chrysler cars in my life and I've gone foreign. So far, I'm loving it. But, I was going to make a nice fat paydown on my CC but instead I'm using some of that money for a down payment...plus some of my savings. I didn't get much for my Jeep but it was not in the best working condition and to get those things fixed would have cost more than what I got for it. I'm not going to race that loan until I get this race finished. Then it will be a two way budget: racing the car loan and maximizing my savings! But...I'm excited that I am finally making gains on my original debt. It only took a year but I finally did it. The company I was working for in Orlando is probably going into bankruptcy so I'm glad I got out. The time working there put me in a very bad situation (financially). I wouldn't go as far as to say it ruined me but I used all of my savings and went into debt just to keep my head above water. My current job is only for the next 7 weeks and then I think I'll work on getting a travel job. I might end up coming back down here for the "season" again next year. At this point, I feel like the only way things will be going is "down"....in terms of my debt! What a weight to be lifted from my shoulders!

Greeting everyone, Just wanted to post a short note and get your feed back on it. We are looing into using CCCS, now the reasoning for this is that we really are only working with one income. Our bills are not behine, no late fees or anything like, I just want to get a break from trying to pay everything and doing the jugging act. The robbing Peter to pay Paul thing, and still not having enough monies for any of it. The house is not completed so the cc that we use to pay for work and supplies, now have a higher monthly payment. That is where the struggle is, in paying thoes and just living expenses (elec.,water etc). We have talked to them and they showed us how it might help, if we decide to go that way. Well, there you have it. Be blessed.

Hi Bramoney! I just read your post and strongly urge you not to go the CCCS route. If there is any way at all to avoid it I think you should. Years ago (15 yrs or so) my DH and I went to CCCS as a way to get out of debt with a plan that sounded great. Like you, we were not behind and had excellent credit but we were on the verge of getting behind and we were struggling to pay bills and minimums on our credit cards and we had just started paying on my DH's student loans so it was very overwhelming. I know exactly how you feel and I am so sorry you are going through this. We worked with CCCS for nearly a year and although we were never late paying CCCS our monthly payment they delay payment to our creditors and completely destroyed our credit. It was devastating after we worked so hard to keep up with our payments and we were diligently making our payments to CCCS thinking in 3 years our debt would be paid off and we would be able to move on. We had higher balances with all of the interest and fees after the year with CCCS than before we started with them. In the end we wound up filing for bankruptcy and was a huge failure in our eyes. It still is to this day. We still haven't learned from our mistakes but we are getting better and back on our feet. I don't know what is best for your particular situation but I know if we had to do it all over again I think we would have done it completely different and worked 2 or 3 jobs and lived on rice and beans or whatever we had to do before we went to CCCS or filed bankruptcy again. There is something about what it does to your self confidence and your financial security and it still haunts us. Is there a way for your DH to find permanent work? I wish you didn't have this burden on your shoulders. I too supported my DH for 5 years while he was in college and then he struggled to find work afterwards so that is how we wound up in the position we were in. His first job out of college transferred us to Phoenix and they wanted him to do some illegal and immoral things and he refused so we wound up jobless and moved back on our own with a buttload of debt. The debt we have now is due to home remodeling we did last year and so I really understand the pain you are going through now too because when you still don't have it complete but yet your bills are piling up and not enough money to pay them it is scary. Home remodeling seems to always cost more and take longer than expected, especially when you are doing it yourself. I just wanted to let you know that I was thinking about you and to give you a big hug!

Hi Everyone!
We have a small update this month but they should be better from now on. My DH is heading out for his first offshore job in a couple of weeks and he will officially be out of training with his job. We have adjusted to living on just his income but with him being in training he is basically making what we made combined so not alot extra to pay down right now. We have been buying tools for his new job and preparing for his trip. He will be gone for a month on this first trip but it should pay off this race. Then he will have a week or so of paid time off when he returns for us to spend together to catch up. We will just have to make the most of his time when he is home and communicate as much as possible when he is away. I have been spoiled having him home every night and weekend and know that it is going to be so hard when he is away, especially this first trip until I am able to get used to it. He had to travel with his other job so it isn't like we haven't done this before but it was a week or two at a time, not a month. I know we will get into a routine and once they have more people trained he can start working truly rotational work so that he is home half the time and offshore the other half. I can't wait until that happens. At least when he is offshore now he gets paid for it unlike his other job that was salary and didn't pay any differently. We are so blessed that he has this job.
It looks like everyone has been trucking along with their payments. Two more weeks until spring! It has been a long winter this year hasn't it?
Congrats on the new house Red Racer Ris! I can't wait to see you hit $50k paid off soon!
Speech - Hang in there girl! You have come so far and I know this is going to be a great year for you! I'm glad you aren't with that company anymore that was pulling you down (in more ways than one) and you can get back on the road and get this debt knocked out in no time.
Take care!

Have any of you heard about a student loan consolidation company called SOFI? Apparently it is pretty new and our accountant/financial advisor has had a few clients that have used it. I may end up doing it. There is a variable rate, but the starting rate is only 2.91%. We are in the process of running all the possibilities of numbers to see if it would be a good deal... even if the rate increased (which goes just slightly higher than what I'm paying right now). If I go for it, this race will probably become null and void. I would consolidate my 2 loans on here with 2 loans that I'm not racing. All together, those loans total $141k (a little less than half of my total student loan balance). The remainder of my loans are fixed at 2.5 and 4.5% so I don't want to touch those! If any one has any info on SOFI, I would love to hear!

deepintx: Thank you for taking the time to write to me about your experience with cccs. I appreciate you sharing this information, we have not made any decision yet, just looking at everything.

Well, I'm back...again! After looking at my update I should be the poster child of what this board can do if you stick with it:
1/5/2013 3/8/2014 Debt Start Previous Current Diff Last Visa 1 $6,864 $13,239 $6,375 Visa 2 $4,736 $5,527 $791 Amex 1 $7,486 $4,423 -$3,054 Amex 2 $0 $4,048 $4,048 TOTAL $19,086 $27,237 $8,151 Loan 1 $25,000 $23,177 -$1,152 Loan 2 $25,000 $13,214 -$1,368 Total $69,086 $63,628 $5,458
UPDATE: SwimmingStrong 03/8/14 $63,628 (01/05/13 $43,415 S145)
In the last year, we were able to re-fi our mortgage to a 3.75% rate down from 5.25%. BUT, the cost of insurance in S. FL ate up my savings . DH's business totally tanked. Amex 2 was for him for emergencies, but we have been living on one salary for the last 18 months. I was a whole lot more accountable when I was posting and sharing and getting feedback from all of you. So I'm back. With a strategy to snowball my smallest card which coincidentally has the highest interest rate!! For the sake of this race, I'm going to focus on the CC debt first then the two loans (from family so no urgency to payback right now) -heart-and exclude the mortgage. Once in a while, DH gets a big check for a project. My question is this - do I put it all toward one of the CC bills or do I pay off my escrow on my mortgage (it's got about a $6K balance on it) and cut my mortgage payment in half for the rest of the year and use that money to snowball? Feedback welcome and appreciated

Update! Pay-no-interest
03/10/14: $93,600
Not much is happening on the home front. DH 1991 car with 265K miles on it finally died. So, DH and I went truck shopping today and bought a used truck -- it is a 2008 with 32K miles. It seems to be in good condition. We can pay cash for the vehicle. I think we paid a fair price for the truck. It'll be nice to have a vehicle to haul stuff in, go to the home improvement store and get items for our home improvement projects and put it in the bed of the truck rather than the roof of the car.
SwimmingStrong: would you list the interest you are paying on each of the loans and the minimum monthly payment you are making on each? It would help us to give you better advice.
BraMoney: I agree with DeepinTx. You should avoid the CCCS loan if at all possible. Most people tell me that they make the situation worse, not better.
We are starting to have some warmer weather today and tomorrow but it is supposed to get colder later this week. I'm definitely ready for it to end.

I am ready to start the next chapter in my life and I don't want to take this debt with me!
Good luck everyone in your race!

Hey all: I'm going to do another update this weekend so get your numbers in if you want to be counted this time.
I've been studying and manipulating my payoff spreadsheet because I bought a new car....sort of "used"...had around 500 miles on it but was being sold as "used" because it was the previous model year. I'm really happy with it and think I squeaked away with my Jeep. I traded it in with a broken windshield, the spare tire on the car (flat in the back), an oil leak/burning oil, and with almost 200k miles. I knew I had some bigger repairs coming up and the deal was too good to pass up. I was trying to figure out if I'm going to race the car loan but I got an APR of 1.75% so I might just pay just over 1/2 the payment every 2 weeks and really start saving like mad (once my current race has ended). By doing it that way, I'll still pay off the loan at least 6 months earlier. Maybe once I get 6 months of expenses (6 months worth of paychecks maybe), then I might start racing that loan but for right now, I'm good with just sticking with my plan.
I extended my job here in FL for another month and then I'll end up taking a couple travel positions. They already asked me to return for the next season so I know I have a job from December thru May-ish of next year.
I feel like things are really starting to look up for me!
Keep the updates coming in...they're looking good!

Mini-Update - since I just re-joined last week, but I want to be included in the update
Pay-no-interest Loan 1 has an interest rate of 3.75%, loan 2 has an interest rate of 2.5%. Both loans came from my mom who was earning less interest in her savings account that what I am paying her so it was a smart investment for her. And because it was my mom, she told me to stop making payments until DH's business picked up again. I'm blessed to have her as a resource , and more than a little embarrassed that my financial situation is not solid enough to manage this!! Hopefully racing this debt and maintaining healthy financial habits will keep this from happening. I want DS to have a good role model so there is a lot at stake ere.
I made some corrections to my original post on totals at start. I've revised the numbers to where they were on 1/5/13 rather than the start of the debt. Those numbers are listed in green

Attention Captains:
Update: Muffyinthe Red 03/17/2014 $78,814.74 (9/9/08 $128,662.37 S373, SU395, PRO 77, 81, 86, 137) NC Paid off since joining $49,847.63 Percentage: 38.8% Paid this month: $123.01 Medical Bills $540.51 -59.00 = $481.51 CU Savings - $1,830.11
This month again is nothing to write home about. It is down but not by much. We had to buy a new battery for DH's car and of course it wasn't a regular cheap kind of battery. So kiss $155 good-bye. We leave for WI for my grandson and son's birthday next Thursday. So I just got caught up from Christmas and it starts all over again. I am not complaining, I love to see them, it is just that the trip will cut into our snowball and cause me to only pay minimums for another 2 months. I paid our HOA dues last week and then the middle of April I owe taxes. I am jealous of everybody here getting big tax refunds. I owe!
Speech - It sounds like the car was a GREAT buy and you will have it paid off soon. Besides that is a great interest rate if you have to pay interest.
Sparks - That is a wonderful update.
Nasgreen - Great to see you.
Everybody keep up the good work.

Is there another board where people are posting requests for advice or inquiries? I remember this board being a lot more active when I first joined two years ago .

SwimmingStrong: I would apply the big check to the CC's. pay off a big chunk at once and save more interest. I like how you are able to do a loan thru your mom. I thought about doing that with my mom but it's one of those things that seem complicated.
I'll have an update sometime this week. I'm waiting for my bill payments to reach their designated checking accounts so I can make my last 2 payments for the month (mortgage and Discover). I think I am going to do monthly updates since I just got myself set up for monthly payments versus the biweekly ones I was doing. It's so much easier being on monthly...now the extra paycheck twice a year really is an extra paycheck!

I think I got all the kinks ironed out of my spreadsheet. I rearranged my rows and have them all in order as of the debt payoff amount. We traded my car in so that changed the Mocu Loan. I made the error of using the money I had set aside for car taxes and paid off a student loan. I ended up getting the car sooner than planned but it's a good lesson to learn about keeping earmarked funds in savings and only using them for what you had planned on.
