I retired from the Marine Corps several years ago. What were the units I served in? There were a lot of them over the years. They all had one thing in common: Marines hating their jobs but loving their country and glad to be Marines while serving it. I copied this poem from a Marine Corps unit's website. I think it tells their story pretty much the way most Marines would want it told. Friends ain’t supposed to die until they’re old. And friends ain’t supposed to die in pain.
No one should die alone when he is twenty one. And living shouldn’t make you feel ashamed.
I can’t believe how young we were back then. One thing’s for sure we’ll never be that young again.
We were daring young men with hearts of gold. And too many of us never did get old.

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. The Marines don't have that problem .....President Ronald Reagan

My wonderful DH serves with the 144th Fighter Wing / Air National Guard. (He's not a traditional guardsman; he's full-time, active duty.)

My wonderful DH serves with the 144th Fighter Wing / Air National Guard. (He's not a traditional guardsman; he's full-time, active duty.) The Active Reserves and National Guard have been doing their share and more for the past ten years in Iraq and Afghanistan. I transfered from active duty to the Reserves thinking I would just have to attend monthly duty...wrong, wrong, .....Reserves will activate those with what they consider critical MOS's i.e. Pilots, Mechanics, Technicians, Doctors, Medics and etc...So the National Guard has been doing more than providing extra security at Airports and assisting in catastrophes at home..

That's for sure. My wonderful DH is about to leave for his 8th deployment to Iraq. We really don't know if that will be his last or not??? Our troops strength is being reduced in Iraq but there seems to be a void for 2012 -2014 so when we have a new president we may learn more about the actual numbers of troops to be deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan after Obama exits from the White House in about 1 and 1/2 years, I hope and pray..

That's for sure. My wonderful DH is about to leave for his 8th deployment to Iraq. Eight deployments, realize he is flying but still , in what ten years of combat there ..hard to comprehend . Can I ask how long a normal deployment lasts in his situation? If a security issue on reply..how about a rough time line. What ever, I am very appreciative for his and your sacrifice..I realize he is a professional and has opted for this career but as one who has served, to me, this is a bit much and have a hard time justifying such deployments..not healthy IMHO, but then again, what do In know. I realize your DH is in a high skilled , not average MOS thus not easily replaced but still, to me, this seems to me a weakness in our forces, and since it takes years to train and become competent in this MOS possible just something that has to be, but still feel not healthy for all parties, including the families.

What is rather sad I think is that so many WW2 Veterans are not using the internet to locate their units or get in touch again with their old comrades....only a small percentage are taking advantage of this ...also many are passing on and not letting their famlies know about what they did in WW2 or Korea...
And of course some old WW2 veterans are not interested in re living again their time in the war...I knew old guys who will never talk about their service in WW2 or in Korea..
