And no, I did not make the decision for us.... my wife came to me last night and said: I think we need to move and she explain to me why: -> She doesn't want us to be cash poor -> she would want us to have more in savings etc. She said it like she came to that conclusion on her own (not that I have been saying for the past two years... but I did not mention that ) We are trying to stay in the same area but downgrading to a 1 bedroom instead of the 2 we have now (barely get any use out of it anyway). Right now we are 3 minutes from the I-84, so might have to move further in to stay within our budget. Our price range is under $1,000 . We are currently paying $1,670... Fingers crossed that we find a place we like, lease is up in June... so going to start looking at the end of April

I hope this is as good a thing as it seems to be... and that it remains stable until June... that is my cautiously optimistic congratulations...
And who else is on this board but old YM? ... have we found a way to get new blood?

I84? You must be CT? There are some very HCOL areas close to 84 and also some very LCOL areas. You should have a lot to choose from.

Now just don't let her "redecorate" too much.

So - what will you do with the extra $8040? If you can add $1960 to it and use it buy a pair of Roths every year, you should have roughly $2.2M when you're age 55 - I guess I would give up a bdrm for $2.2M.

That is great news. Make sure you get that money in savings, and not just piddle it away.

...:::"We are trying to stay in the same area but downgrading to a 1 bedroom...might have to move further in to stay within our budget. Our price range is under $1,000 . We are currently paying $1,670... ":::...
I will say that downgrading to a 1Br is the saving grace that may actually make everything work out.
However, go to MSN while you still can, and review a lot of the issues posed, because they are still problematic. From what I can remember:
- Moving in and of itself costs money. Will you save enough to recoup the money as well as the effort. - Your wife had spent a lot on decorating. We both know most of those items won't fit the new place, and she'll want to do it again. - You had agreed to save money by curbing your spending (ex. one dinner out every 2 weeks instead of two per week). Did that happen? - Are you making coffee at home now, or still spending those huge amounts daily for your brew?
...:::"Fingers crossed that we find a place we like, lease is up in June... so going to start looking at the end of April ":::...
June-Aug is the WORST time to move, because most people move at that time and there is high demand. If you are really looking at saving a lot with lower rents, I wonder whether it would be possible to lock in a lower rate, and then either pay to break your lease, or even pay dual rent for one month. I had a neighbor who was paying $200/mo less than me for the same apartment just because she moved in during February, and I moved in during June.
...:::"That is great news. Make sure you get that money in savings, and not just piddle it away.":::...
That was most of our biggest fear for you on the other thread -- that moving to an "inferior" place, as well as the temptation of the extra cash, would prompt your wife to stress-spend and blow the difference. Make sure that money goes to savings before either of you see it.

I'm guessing most of those decorations will move with them. I mean - she didn't install granite countertops and moving a wall in the apartment, right? She probably painted, bought furniture, maybe some pictures for the wall, etc. All of that can be picked up and moved. So, there shouldn't be a real "loss" there. The only thing that would be a money loser is if she bought a bunch of furniture for that second bedroom. You either have to store it or sell it at a loss. But, either way, at a rent savings of EIGHT THOUSAND dollars a year - you can probably stomach the hit. Two or three years at the lower rent can create a significant savings account.

Ah, you guys remind me of the days when DH & I were newlyweds. We rented the least expensive apartment we could find in a decent neighborhood close to one of our jobs. After 4 years we'd saved a nice downpayment for our 1st house. You don't have to love your 1-bedroom apt--just find a place that has a nice feature or two you like while you're squirreling away all of that extra money. Best of luck!

Our one-bedroom apartment has hardwood floors; I love it. Our last one-bedroom had a terrific deck and a great view of town. Both of them have their cons, but each has a feature that made us enjoy their quirks. Good luck with your potential move!

There are days I really really miss our first one bedroom apartment. Life really was simpler and way less stressful back then. I want to go back sooo bad, but I think it would be really unfair to our 3 cats and dog to do that.

My fear was that they were very specific to the apartment and would not "match" the new one. Now, if they are just switching between generic apartment buildings with white walls and the same basic styling, the decor will probably transfer. My fear is that the styles will vary significantly, and the decor for the old one will look out of place in the new one. For ex. a painting with a bright red frame might look great in a place with white walls, but silly in a place with earth tones or wallpaper.

This is one of the threads I most wanted copied from the old board. I'm really excited to hear how things go down for cawiau and his wife. I wish them the best and look forward to more details.

And who else is on this board but old YM? ... have we found a way to get new blood? Since we moved people seem to be floating between boards more than they did on MSN. P&M posters or WIR might not have been following cawiau's saga.
