Herald News: A nominee's shabby treatment LATE ON Wednesday, in the midst of furious budget battles being played out in Trenton, the state Senate confirmed a package of six judges for the Superior Court bench in Passaic County, helping to shore up a judicial system that had been left short because of recent retirements. We are happy that Governor Christie addressed this shortage, we are happy the senators took this necessary step, and we are happy six of our fellow citizens stepped forward to serve. We are embarrassed, however, as all New Jerseyans should be, at the way the Senate got to that final vote for one nominee. Although five of the nominees registered only minimal debate and discussion among members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, a sixth, Sohail Mohammed of Clifton, an attorney who has specialized in immigration law and who will no doubt bring needed diversity to the county's court processes, was subjected to more than an hour of grilling on matters hardly related to his legal abilities. Instead, some senators, most notably Sen. Gerald Cardinale, R-Demarest, used the nomination hearing last Monday to question Mohammed, a practicing Muslim, about terrorist groups, Sharia law and at one point even asked him to define the term jihad. www.northjersey.com/news/opinions/124931604__A_nominee_s_religion_is_not_relevant.html...at the risk of sounding like I'm excusing shabby treatment of a nominee, what's the point about bringing much needed diversity to the county's court processes?
