from the article (fox news one)
"A 5-year contract approved by members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union at the Shelbyville, Tenn., plant last November includes the change to accommodate Muslim workers."
the workers in the union approved the contract... this was not a one sided move by Tyson as alleged in the title of the post....
what's the issue, a labor union fairly negotiated with the employer a benefit for its members....

I really encourage people to read the full, accurate story at the link that was provided by P.I. in the OP. Here it is again: www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,397645,00.html Workers at one individual plant negotiated for a contract which changed the holiday they would be paid for. The contract was approved by a majority of the workers.

let's all get up in arms because 80% of the workers at a plant asked for and were granted a request.... that's about as "American" as it can get....
right from the Fox News story quoted...
"The union's national president, Stuart Appelbaum, said it is the union's job "to stand up to win respect for every worker's right to practice their faith."
Tyson officials said the contract was agreed to by 80 percent of the union's 1,000 members at the plant."

I see nothing wrong with the deal...all workers will get a paid holiday..to have that many workers of the fqith, that is a important consideration, not the firstt ime considerations of faith were taken into account in the states..when I was a kid the New Haven School system would have the Jewish Holidays off as a system holiday, so many kids of that faith and teachers too, would have to hire so many substitutes and many of the substitutes also Jewish..better to just have a holiday..my school system had few kids and teachers who were Jewish so they, I , just didn't go to school but school went on..special arrangements to fit special needs..no conspiracy here to me, so guess I will continue to eat Tyson chicken..[if on sale of course }

we will agree to disagree... you are entitled to not buy Tyson products....and I feel that what the business and the workers agree to in a fair negotiation are acceptable....
as to the non union workers.... you did not read your own post..
"But Tyson spokeswoman Libby Lawson told FOXNews.com that employees who are not a member of the union at that plant would still be eligible for Labor Day as a paid holiday"...
looks like a win/win to me

One American at a time. Tyson chicken anyone?? None for me thanks!!!! We all need to heed this message!!!!!What about the rights of the non union workers at Tyson Foods who were obvioulsy not too happy about Tyson Foods Celebrating a Muslim Holiday instead of Labor Day?? I guess Liberals or Muslims could care less.. What do you say to these folks?? News of the holiday change has prompted some anger on local Web message boardsJust tell them to "Deal With it".... clearly it was more important to the Muslim workers to have the day off during Ramadan than it was for the non-Muslim workers to have Labor Day off. if it wasn't, the union proposal wouldn't have been made. all employees are still getting the same number of paid days off. P.I. - would you be so upset about this if it were a group of Jewish workers that wanted Rosh Hashanah (sp?) off instead of Labor Day?

That is a wonderful title for the article. In fact, it would have made a better title for the thread also instead of: "Tyson Foods A Muslim Holiday Instead of Labor Day". That is why I encouraged people to go to the actual article.

Anyone else find it ironic that a labor union negotiated to not observe Labor Day?

If he was , he only gets one vote still, so it seems the members of the uniion must have voted in the majority to go along with the change..

... ... wait @ 30 minutes while they took their coffee breaks in the AM or Coke of Pepsi breaks in the PM ..... Yes, we made you think we were drinking coffee or sodas. ....tough duty especially when some of the Yeomen were good looking young ladies who looked drop dead gorgeous in their whites......

... the young Jarhead says " Sir I cannot get an erection" ... The Navy uniform attracted women who were attractive enough to where this wasn't a problem for us.

Anyone else find it ironic that a labor union negotiated to not observe Labor Day? Yes the Union Shop Stewart at Tyson Foods was probably a Muslim. BTW I can see why the Navy made you a Yoeman..they were all a bunch of nit pickers who doubled checked to make sure you crossed every "T" and dotted every "i" when you had to fill out any paperwork and wait @ 30 minutes while they took their coffee breaks in the AM or Coke of Pepsi breaks in the PM ..reminded me of a bunch of old women who enjoyed being pains in the rear with all due respects to former Navy Yeomen and old ladies of course.. P.I., This is exactly why you have problems with the Moderators. First, you put up some article with a false title. Second, you selectively read the article or are unable to comprehend the article. Thirdly, you then do a personal attack on another poster because he disagrees with your distorted view of the article. This B.S. had better cease and desist or you will be booted from the boards. rovo -- Moderator

P.I., It is not required for someone to complain in order for a Mod to take action. The post by you, quoted in my previous post #17 (I think it is 17), is the reason for my intervention. The solution is really very simple .... do not attack the posters .... argue the comments but not the poster. You seem to have a hard time understanding this item.

So Bills pls chime in if you don't agree with my comments..but probably of no signficance now since I deleted most of my comments since this thread was supposedly "false" I guess?? Not to beat this into the ground but do you take this comment as a "personal attack"............ I just don't see it.. if you do then I never intended it as such and I think you know or understand that about me based on our prior discussion about the Navy Vs Marine thing BTW I can see why the Navy made you a Yeoman..they were all a bunch of nit pickers who doubled checked to make sure you crossed every "T" and dotted every "i" when you had to fill out any paperwork and wait @ 30 minutes while they took their coffee breaks in the AM or Coke of Pepsi breaks in the PM ..reminded me of a bunch of old women who enjoyed being pains in the rear with all due respects to former Navy Yeomen and old ladies of course..
