Bavaria is my favorite part of Germany. Staying in small towns like Mittenwald is much cheaper than the big cities.

I really liked Cologne (Koln) and Bonn.

Oooh! Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a wonderful, medieval walled town to visit. We usually stopped there for the night when in Germany. Nice hotels, friendly people, and lots of history.

I would do a cruise either up or down Father Rhein (Rhine). I don't remember Naggie if your husband is American but if so I think he would love seeing all the ruined castles (we don't have any from the 13th century in the U.S. ). The Rhine has been Germany's highway for so long; even pre-dating the Romans. There's a great museum in Trier (Treve en francais) which does an amazing job of bringing ancient history to life from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age through the Romans and medieval Germany. ETA it sounds like you might be traveling late September? Wine harvest and the Rhineland is Germany's wine center. Another ETA: Two fun/interesting books on Germany: Springtime for Germany by Ben Donald. Warning it's not a true travel guide (!) and The Rhine by Insight Guides. It's out of print and I had to part with $30 from Amazon but I had borrowed the book from German friends and fell in love. It's what sold me on moving to Bonn.
