I'm pleased with this transaction, they're not free, and I am envious of you ladies who get free or nearly free toothpaste and shampoo, but normally I would have paid over $2.00/tube for toothpaste and $2.00-$3.00 or more for shampoo/conditioner, so this is a start for me at about a $1.00 each (or $.50/ea if I factor in the $2.00 EBC I got back). I figure I have enough shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste on hand to last me 3 months (I live alone). munjoyhill: You're off to a great start. Just know that toothpaste is free ALL THE TIME at CVS, so now just keep your eyes peeled for the freebies and you'll never have to pay for toothpaste again.

Just saw this on moneysavingmom.com - good deal, right? .Staples: 16-count Charmin Double Rolls for $4.24 (in-store only) by Crystal on June 29, 2011 Through July 30, 2011, Staples has a 16-count package of Charmin Double Rolls on sale for $4.99. Use the 15% off one item coupon (valid through July 2, 2011) to get this big package for just $4.24. This deal is valid in-store only. nickeyleey: A while back you posted a link to "The Toilet Paper Principle". I copied/pasted the info to a file because it is always hard to tell based on the number of rolls in a package; it really depends on overall square feet. Here it is to refresh your memory. When you get the stats on what is on sale at Staples, please let us know if it's a good deal, okay? THE TOILET PAPER PRINCIPLELet's talk toilet paper for a moment. It's definitely a necessity, and I personally find it to be one of the most difficult items to stockpile. Deals have been somewhat scarce lately, and in addition, it's just darn hard to figure out whether you're really getting bargain on it. With double rolls and ultra packs, etc., how do you know if you're paying a reasonable price or not. Look at the front bottom of the toilet paper package to determine the total square feet. Now insert a decimal point in this number two places to the left. If the cost of the package minus coupons is less than or equal to this figure, it's a decent deal -- basically $0.01 or less per square foot! Example: TP #1 = 400 sq. ft.; price = $6; stock-up price $4, so not a fabulous deal.... TP #2 = 650 sq. ft.; price = $5; stock-up price $6.50, so definitely a bargain! Thanks for posting that again Dancin! Unfortunately, I've had to be a little lenient on this principle b/c I've had a hard time finding tp deals over the past few months. I can hunt down food deals with the best of them but I can never find a deal on tp! Too bad I won't have time to go by a Staples before the weekend, but if I get to one this weekend I'll report back. To me it sounds like a good deal for 18 double rolls, even if it is the Charmin basic. If it passes the tp principle, I'll buy as many as they'll let me (or as many as I can fit in the camry!) OK, maybe not that many, but I'll stock up!

" So now I am taking the advice of you ladies and gents here and buying what is one sale, for the past week blueberries were on sale, and I feel like they're coming out of my ears! But they are very good, and good for you!" Munjoyhill, blue berries freeze really well. I would just spread them out on baking sheet, with small sides, and dust with a little corn starch and freeze them till the outsides were pretty solid. Then I would take them and put in a zip lock bag and back into my freezaer. We had blueberries through most of last winter thanks to it. ;D Just a thought. Ha! Beachbum - I was immediately going to respond to Munjoyhill that blueberries freeze well - you beat me to it! Now I didn't know about the corn starch tip - does that help prevent freezer burn?

"Newspaper makes a good point about not being able to sell papers without inserts." Except they do it all the time. It is theft though, what she did. The boxes clearly say that you are only allowed to take one newpaper when you pay to open the box. Maybe she doens't feel the inserts are the same as taking a whole nother paper but I think the manufactures and papers are getting tired of everyone complaining that they bought the paper and all the ads and inserts were missing. Because of this type of thing Red Plum has stopped putting them in the papers here. Now they come in the mail on Thursday. I think if she took it out of someone's mail box should would be in even bigger trouble as that is a Federal crime.

Wow. I am so overwhelmed right now! Last night I went onto Target's website and printed a bunch of coupons for stuff I thought I might use one day. Of course they all expire pretty soon so I don't know that I'll actually use them, especially if I'm trying to wait for these things to go on sale. They do have a coupon for a new carseat, which was nice. I need two new ones pretty soon. I also went onto Kroger's website and downloaded a bunch of coupons to my loyalty card. But you can't pair them with manufacturer's coupons and most of them expire in two days, so...hmm. Off to a bit of a rough start, but hey. I'm sure I'll get the hang of this soon. I just have to pay WAY more attention to sales then I ever did before...which was never. I'm a slacker at heart ;D You don't need to print & download all the coupons at once. Take a deep breath...whew...ok....that's good...now let's start over. Start with Frugal Suz's blog: frugalsuz.blogspot.com/I don't know which of these stores you have, but she the write-ups for the BEST deals at CVS, Rite Aid and Wags. You can see what deals are coming up starting this Sunday, and then you can see what coupons you might have to make the deals work. For example, if you have Walgreens, you'll notice that you can obtain a free (after RR) toothbrush with a coupon from this Sunday (7/3) newspaper. Slow and steady wins the race....most weeks I get a few items free. It adds up.

I went to CVS today at noon, intending to just get toothpaste, Colgate is on sale for $2.87, I had a $1.00Q, plus I would get back $1.00 in ECB, so for a newbie, I thought this was a good scenario. But . . . I first scanned my card, and I got a $2.00 Pantene CVS Q. Yes! (or is this called a Catalina??) So I quickly rearranged my transactions and here's what I did: Transaction #1 $6.97 for 2 Pantene products -3.00 Q 2 Pantene products -2.00 Q (Catalina?) CVS Pantene product 1.97 + .35 tax, for OOP $2.32, plus I got $2.00 in ECB Yes, yes, yes, now you are talking! Great job on the Pantene - woohoo! There are 2 ways of calculating coupon costs/savings. (In accounting terms it would be called accrual vs cash.) I use the accrual method, so with my method, I would calculate that you got the Pantene FREE (except for tax.) Many here calculate their savings/costs using the cash basis, so they would say you paid $2.32 for the Pantene and $2.03 for the Toothpaste. It doesn't matter which way you calculate it, as long as you ONLY calculate your rewards once.Hope that makes sense and -remember- go SLOW with the deals!

OK, maybe not that many, but I'll stock up! nickyleey: I totally agree; free TP is rare (for me anyway). A couple of years ago a lot of the gals were getting Angel Soft for free ALL THE TIME. It would be $1/4-pack and they would be able to double a $.50/1 to get it for free. Since I live in the land of no doubles, I could not do the deal and NEVER got free TP. In the past (6) years, I have only been able to get free TP twice. Once was thanks to a complex CVS scenario that mawmaw posted (I will never forget it because I was new to CVS and would never have imagined that it could have been done) and the second was January of this year when Rite Aid had their generic brand for $1 and yielding a $1 UP. I had UPs to roll into it, so I walked away with an equal amount of UPs and only had to pay sales tax. The only way that I have found to get around the no free TP problem is to use 'for profit rewards' from one of the drug chains to pick it up when they are having it at a rock bottom price. Getting rewards obtained "for free" and using them to cover my OOP on products that are rarely free otherwise, has always been a lifesaver for me. In the past I have kept a mental list of the items that I wanted to stockpile that were rarely free and got rain checks for said items that I then used at my convenience to build a stockpile. I have used this strategy with MANY items: toilet paper, paper towels, Ziplocs of all varieties, household cleaners, coffee and other staples as well as various different foods, etc. and it has allowed me to build free stockpiles of things that otherwise would rarely/never be free. HTH

daisylu- It's funny that you put that article up there...when I was in CVS today, there was a lady stealing the circulars out of the newspapers? I actually went behind her to see what she was swiping, and it was just the ads for Kroger's 4th of July sale and a Sears circular. Why would you need to steal those out of the newspaper? So confused. There was also a lady there who cleared an entire bin of Cheerios cereal, and was bugging the manager about what time EXACTLY the truck would be in on Saturday so she could get more. I felt like I was on Candid Couponing Camera: What Not To Do.

Kind of a ramble here...
I just started a new Price Book for myself. I had one that I used for years, and after awhile, all the "low" prices were in my head. It's only just the husband & I, and we tend to buy the same things regularly.
But, now, as we all know, inflation is hitting pretty hard, so I felt it was time to start a new Price Book, to see what the "new" low prices are.
So, today, I went to Safeway & bought Reynolds Aluminum foil. It was $2.49 for 75 sf with the store coupon. And I had a $1 mq with a .50 doubler. So the price ended up being .99 for 75 sf. I bought 3 rolls.
I'm not sure that this is a "great" price, but I'm starting to look towards buying things to hedge off inflation. By tracking prices in my Price Book, I can see whether that is the case or not. Should be interesting.
P.S. to DancinMama - I wrote some things in that Stockpile thread referencing you. I hope what I wrote is ok & if I wrote anything wrong, I apologize.

Also, like DancinMama said, I too tried to get items for free that I couldn't normally get free. I used that $3 survey q at RA to get free sandwich bags, sponges, wax paper, paper towels and sugar. I had other items on my list, but now it looks like my free $3 is going, going, gone. So I've got to look to at least get things cheap.

Use the 15% off one item coupon (valid through July 2, 2011) to get this big package for just $4.24. This deal is valid in-store only. Staples also takes manufacturer coupons, so you might be able to improve the deal a little depending on what you have available. The recent insert coupon is .25/1 or something, which seems like a waste of paper to me considering the price of charmin, but every little bit helps...

I never had any trouble with coupons until EC- FACT. People who steal inserts don't realize what a PIA they are for the distributors- in those areas where there are still distrubutors- you cost the carrier money.

I would like to thank the many gals on here who have mentioned buying clearance meat at Safeway. I had never even realized that existed until you all mentioned it.
A few months ago, after hearing you all talk about it, I asked the butcher at my Safeway about it. She explained they don't do it at a particular time or day. They just put it on clearance when they see something that needs to move.
Anyhoo....
So just now I went to Safeway, planning on buying some ground turkey. Well, the price on that was $6.99. Yikes! So I meandered over to the little clearance section and I found this delicious pack of 2 huge ka-bobs of chicken & veges - final price - $2!
So, my dinner cost $2, which is absolutely fantastic. My grill is heating up right now as I write this. The reason I particularly wanted to share this, is that DancinMama was talking earlier about shopping the ads. It just goes to show if one is flexible, you can save money, even without coupons, and being healthy. If I had been stubborn & picky tonight, I would have payed a heck of a lot more for my dinner!

The fact remains that every time a thread comes up regarding Extreme Couponing and stockpiling, the exact same negativity comes out from the naysayers. I always post on those threads attempting to explain how using coupons and stocking up on items can be extremely beneficial financially and I do it for a reason - it might actually HELP someone consider a financial possibility that they had never thought of. Unfortunately, it always seems to morph into the same old-same old discussion. I don't really mind though; I just put on my big girl panties and laugh all the way to the bank.

There's definitely a bizarre viciousness that seems to come out on those threads. Of course, there was also always a lot of viciousness on the Your Money board as well, which is why I only posted rarely after getting really nasty responses to a question I posed (this was some years ago.)
I've seen the same viciousness when it comes to the food stamp threads that seem to pop up periodically on Your Money. Somehow, a ton of posters shop at stores where the person in front of them is buying Filot Mignon, Salmon & Perrier & paying with food stamps. I personally do not notice how the person in front of me is paying. And I only notice what they are buying if it's something yummy like Eclairs that makes my stomach growl - lol!

People have no clue what someone else's situation is when they get vicious. I just chalk it up to that old saying- you know what they say about "assume"

New fallout from EC at one of my grocery stores. 2 weeks ago I was in there and went through the self checkout with coupons and had no trouble. Today I went through self checkout again because I had 2 transactions and I didn't feel like getting that look from any checkers. Plus there was no one in self checkout so I had room to spread out. When I finished my transaction and started using my coupons the self checkout monitor came flying over and had to do my coupons for me. In two weeks they've changed their policy so customers can't do their own. It makes me wonder if a specific event happened to cause them to change.
I should amend this to say that I am assuming it is EC fallout. In reality I have no idea why it actually happened.

Personally, I also liked what maryjane had to say on the subject: " I don't get the point of coming on a message board full of people who have a positive experience doing something that benefits their families, and trying to convince them that it has no benefit despite the fact that you've never done it." That's exactly what always happens. I know that there IS a reason why they are so adamantly negative about it; I just haven't figured out what it is yet.

I had a most excellent hounding day I went to Harris Teeter after work. I have been holding 2 free 12-pack coupons from Coke rewards for months now and they were expiring today...just in time for a B2G3 free sale ;D The max amount on the coupons is 4.99, but when the manager came to override them she put them through for the full 6.39 (which is a seriously outrageous price). She said it wasn't my fault that their cokes cost more than they should, LOL. So I got 5 cases of soda for just ~$1 in tax. Plus they had goldfish on sale for $1 and I found .55/1 peelies that they doubled so hey, free goldfish. Overall I saved 87% on my 13 items. After that I went to CVS. They actually had the rephresh tampons in stock and I got a scanner coupon that netted me some free pringles. I went to pick up my prescription, which I normally have to pay $178 for and then get reimbursed. But for some reason the pharm tech told me that there was no copay I asked what was up with that, but she didn't know, so I just took it and ran... Then when I got home I had a $10 GC from a P&G rebate waiting for me. Amazing how much better things got once I left work today

Amazing how much better things got once I left work today emhalf: Hmmm....some how that sounds familiar...a MOST EXCELLENT hounding day!!

My guess for the reason is the general reason why people put others down - to feel better about themselves. It definitely shows some serious self esteem issues. People who are truly comfortable in their own skin don't feel the need to look down their nose at others. It's really easy to be judgmental (about anything) until you yourself go through hard times (I'm not just referring to financial hard times). When you go through challenging situations in life, you find that you would like people to give you some grace, not judgment. We are a judgmental society - we judge people if they are too fat or too skinny, if their things aren't up to some artificial standard (their house, their car, their clothes), if their job isn't deemed professional enough, etc. Making fun of people using coupons just goes along with that. We as a society have a very negative attitude toward people being less than middle class financially. There is a presumption that people have done something wrong to deserve their lower income. I faced this judgment as a young girl - my family was poor in a middle class neighborhood. My parents are amazing people - and it's a bit more than I will go into at this time - but people who know what my family has survived have tremendous respect for my parents. But most people only see the outside and don't take the time to get to know people. This Grocery Challenge board is made up of wonderful people who are very non-judgmental & want to help others. That's why I like hanging out here.
