Texas's worst drought since record-keeping began in 1895 is fueling a rally in water prices as energy prospectors from ExxonMobil to Korea National Oil expand the use of a drilling technique known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, that uses up to 13 million gallons in a single well. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43443146/ns/business-us_business/

I don't know how much rain the coast is getting but I can say that here in the middle of Texas we are getting almost none. It's rained here 3 times this year. One of those times was a 10 minute sprinkle that didn't even turn the yard green. The lack of rain added to the high heat that we are experiencing (we are on pace to set new records & our old record was -I think- 26 days over over 100 degrees in a single summer). Yesterday it was 105 & last week it was 110 degrees & it's no cooler today, nor is it projected to be any time soon. Heck we have a automatic yard sprinkler system & our yard is burning up because of the temps. On the other hand we have a LCOL so it kind of balances out up until we actually run out of water.

Tex, on the local news last night they said over 90% of Texas is under drought condition. Just a very small portion of north Texas is not.

So hard to imagine.. when I was growing up in Houston you didn't have to water your plants, grass, nothing. Plus-- many people kept rowboats in the garage where I lived so the kids could go to the top of the neighborhood and pick people up from where they had to park their cars due to flooding. Same when I spent many years in Austin. Tons of rain. Strange.. of course, here in AZ we have no rain, no water, no lawns, beautiful trees, nothing, and our water bills are through the roof because we have to bring it in from Colorado...

T. Boone says he'll make more in water than he ever did in oil. And he's getting ready to make a killing. Says of course people will pay for water if they want it bad enough. washingtonexaminer.com/node/207036

The Texan governor has been asking the people to pray for rain, but for some reason it is not working.

The Texan governor has been asking the people to pray for rain, but for some reason it is not working. Perhaps there are not enough christians there to make it worth answering. Or perhaps, since the drought conditions are nasty he is asking those who believe to simply believe for rain, Native Americans used to smoke peyote and dance 1/2 naked to ask the spirits for favor in rain.

I would pay to see Rick do that!
I guess you are right, not enough good Christians in a conservative state is to be expected.

Don't get me wrong, we are located in a dry part of the state & every year we are warned about water shortages. This year is different in that we just aren't getting any rain & it's a lot hotter than normal. In the 105 & up temps you just can't keep a yard here alive without shade of some sort. We have trees in our yard but where they don't shade the grass is just burning up.
Tex? Is your water supply supported by wells or river?
We have 3 rivers that met here (that's why the town grew here). Outside of town we have 2 lakes that the rivers feed into (may have been created btw, I don't know). Of course when you have lots of sun you get a lot of evaporation. A few years back I heard that we were losing 7 feet of water per day from evaporation. I'm guessing that it's more this year.

If you are going to paraphrase me please keep it in context, nowhere did I say good Christians [q]Perhaps there are not enough Christians there to make it worth answering[/q] And why do you equate a conservative state with a Christian state?

With all the crop losses to go with it the impact on the economy will be large. I read somewhere that some scientist says that the earth has reached it's maximum tilt which it does every so many hundreds of years and that causes a change of the wind flow over the earths surface and creates changes in the weather patterns. Not knowlegable enough to know if that is correct or not. I wonder what the global warming folks have to say? But the weather sure has been crazy of late.

I don't. I would be surprised if a conservative state was a Christian state given the whole philosophy of selfishness that conservatives preach, and the philosophy of helping others that Jesus taught.
I just though that god wouldn't cotton to bad Christians, you know? Enough Christians is never enough, just as enough sex is not enough; it better be good.

Native Americans used to smoke peyote and dance 1/2 naked to ask the spirits for favor in rain. Well I guess that I won't be doing my part. You have to know the right people around here to get peyote & I don't. Then there's the part about me dancing around half naked. Anyone seeing me dance would just "assume" that I was on fire & they couldn't see the flames so wouldn't want to cause a commotion (either on fire or a really really bad seizure).

I hope they do not permanently frakk up their water supply in the process.

Texas is hugely Southern Baptist (at least every where I've been). Religion play a part in politics simply because the Southern Baptist are a huge voting block.
I was raised SB & they tend to be conservative in their ideas. It wasn't until 2 years ago that you could buy alcohol in our county which I found strange. On every road leading into town (that was in another county) there was a liquor store. SB's love the appearance of being good (for want of a better way of saying it). My W.A.S. (wild ass guess) is that at least half of them like to drink & party but wouldn't admit it except to very close friends.
