i want to take a moment to thank rip for posting this and other threads on this subject.
a year ago, i was mostly uninformed about this issue. i had feelings about it, but few facts. the facts i DID have flew in the face of the policies of Trump and Abbot, which is why i have objected strenuously, but only so far as their policies and ideas flew in the face of the facts.
now, i am much better informed. so, whereas i once thought that there was a concern, perhaps ill placed but well intended, on the part of the right on this issue, i have now come to believe that i was WRONG.
i now think that the right is being had. they are having their fears manipulated by racists and by the monied elite into reacting irrationally over this issue. there are many sensible solutions. the right has no interest in them, because they are better served by terrifying the electorate than fixing the problem(s).

I had one friend complaining that he didn't think celebrities should express their political views (so he's anti-Taylor)..isn't that what Trump does? Idiot... Do you know how many people listen to every word that woman says? Would like to compare that to how many people listen to Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama. I think it is her civic duty to get her fans informed and out to vote. I see why Dads, Chad's and Brad's want her to shut up. As a Liberal woman I'm begging her to talk about politics. Do you think we could get her to write a song about it? i think it would be a complete abdication of her moral obligation to yield that right. and don't get me wrong. 99% of the performers WE HEAR ABOUT DO abdicate it- because they are being told to do so by money managers, who are in it for a paycheck, and trying to maximize return for not just the artist, but themselves. this is why it takes a PARTICULARLY good person to become a Willie Nelson or a Randy Newman or a Taylor Swift or a Paul Robeson or a Louis Armstrong. they refuse the Devil's bargain. or they simply have nothing to say, which is fine (but not for me).

again- i will add the following:
if i am a migrant looking for a job in Texas, i simply go through in AZ and set up camp in El Paso. it is less than a day to walk there from AZ. in other words, all of these maddening and illegal gyrations by Abbot have only cut one day out of the influx. if that.

Although I can't find the news article I read about 1 week ago, it said the crossings at Eagle Pass was down 70% since the razor wire was put up which shows Gov Abbott's effort is working. The illegal asylum seekers moved their crossing efforts somewhere else. do me a favor. read back through this thread. you will find a post where i said "Arizona?" in response to your question about what happens if they closed the Texas border, how would they get in? i will add the supplemental remark here: Texas is not an island. this is WHY we need federal enforcement, rip. without it, this is pointless. since the time i made this comment i would add this: Biden said he would close the border on DAY ONE if Congress gave him the authority. Congress has the opportunity in it's hand right now, but your deranged leader is stopping it. i hope he pays for it, dearly. but given the complete lack of outrage on your part, i kinda doubt it. the rest of us are giving you and the GOP blank stares right now.

adjunct to previous: open borders didn't seem to hurt the US between 1600 and 1787.

i know that most don't want to admit it, but many of our ancestors came here to escape persecution and poverty. MANY. mine certainly did. and sure, in my case it predates the republic by 100 years, but it still stands. the only difference is, that for my family, there WAS NO BORDER PATROL. talk about OPEN BORDERS!!!!!

the northern border is over 5500 miles long, and is virtually uncontrolled.

Jon Voight and James Woods. You forgot Scott Baio. Charleton Heston. Ronald Reagan. there is a long list of entertainers that are right wing. that is because they are PEOPLE, not monkeys. ibid

I had one friend complaining that he didn't think celebrities should express their political views (so he's anti-Taylor)..isn't that what Trump does? Idiot... tell your friend, coming from a performer, that we are not dancing monkeys for their entertainment. we are human beings. we have feelings, aspirations, etc. we make mistakes, we hurt ourselves and others, and we have struggles with mortality, addiction, etc. and most of us use our art to CONNECT with people. how do we connect if we are not the least bit honest with you? we have the RIGHT in this country to talk about that, and we will assert it until someone like Trump takes it away. and i say RIGHT as a minimum. if ANYONE doesn't like that, you can vote with your wallet. that's FINE BY US. we don't need you, or want you, if you can't have a mind at least open enough to ACCEPT that we might differ with you. you don't have to love it. we don't expect that. in fact, you might hate it. but you won't bully us with your money. we would rather STARVE than lose that right. well, most of us, anyway. many of us do. but there is no price tag for our feelings. it is the Devil's bargain. i would argue that popular artists have a RESPONSIBILITY to speak their minds. because we can influence people, and change the course of history. but if a celebrity wants to yield that responsibility, that is up to them. they don't have to accept it. but it is there for them, if they want to embrace it. so, congrats, Taylor, for that. if this sounds like a "fuck you", it is. PS- this is not the first time i have heard this argument. i bet you can tell.

here, let me summarize.... we could spend 100 billion on walls*, with 40 billion to maintain them OR we could hire 2000 more border patrol officers, and create amnesty courts to quickly process and deport the 90% that are not eligible. cost: $1B/year. that's it. so, we CAN (yes) build the wall, monitor it (10000 people MINIMUM to do that, scgal , probably more like 100000 for three shifts and two borders), or we can spend 1% and engender a more humane and effective result. do you see why liberals like me are driven crazy over this debate, yet?

I wish I could like this more than once. electrify the fence and razor wire don't have much experience with electric fences, do you? gloves and chaps work for getting over those. every cowboy knows that. cows are stupid. people are not.

As I sit here on my weekend day off from my secure paying job, in my heated home, sipping coffee, contemplating what to pull from my stocked cabinets or frig for breakfast, I am thinking that the migrants on our Southern border should ... Go to the entrance port and wait their turn. Your good life is in no way responsible for their bad situation. good life? no. but we are, in fact, responsible for giving them a SURVIVABLE life. at least if we plan on being part of the global community, we are.

From photos and videos I’ve seen it says ‘climb the walls’. That is part of the problem. The wall is there to say use the front door but the rules are being ignored with little to no consequence of it. you are so close to being in the same place i am on this. if you could just admit that walls are stupid....... people that come here illegally and STAY do so because they know they can live under the radar. why? because they can work cash jobs, or use a fake ID to get a real one. if we stopped that practice, it would pretty much eliminate "illegal" migration. however, i should point something out. the domestic workforce is not growing. so if you want a growing economy, you are going to have to explain to me how curtailing immigration is going to allow for that. i know you have thought about it, scgal. what is your solution?

Respectfully you are totally wrong about walls. A wall is not saying keep out it, it says use the door. By using the door then you can successfully manage migrant population. From photos and videos I’ve seen it says ‘climb the walls’. i have never seen a wall i could not breach in 5 mins. edit: i take that back. prisons and Berlin are/were surrounded by such walls. would anyone here want to live in a place like that? i wouldn't.

A+ for asking that question. A: "what every other nation on Earth has had since the fall of the Berlin Wall" the idea that open borders are an issue for the other 193 nations is ludicrous. that is how it is done. which means you need to manage your migrant population through enforcement. not f(*king walls. Respectfully you are totally wrong about walls. A wall is not saying keep out it, it says use the door. By using the door then you can successfully manage migrant population. have you done any traveling outside the US? there are no walls scgal, except in China. and they are a tourist site. walls are STUPID they are utterly ineffective for preventing migration of anything other than deer.

you're right. fixed it for you. Accuracy is important. He may get convicted, like I said in the past he will not serve any jail time. I'm sure if he wins the election he will try to pardon himself. if ANY Republican wins, he will get pardoned. his LEAST chance of getting pardoned is if he wins. he has worked himself into a pretty sweet set of outcomes.

if you go back and look at the board from that time, there were MANY of us that worried that if he had LOST, he would have done exactly what he did in 2020/21. i believe you were one of them. I’m a follower of Bill Maher. He said way back that ‘Trump won’t leave’. he's like a fungus. or a virus. they just mutate and find a new host.

he claimed in the primaries that he won races that he lost, as well. he NEVER admits to losing. he must be a blast to play golf against. Doesn't trump coincidentally win all the club championship tournaments on the courses he owns? Why yes he does. Even if he plays on days which are not days associated with the championship days to play. he goes out and golfs when he buys new courses, then claims he is club champion. of course, that is trivially true. it is also trivially true that he is the biggest loser that his new club has ever seen. this is the way Trump frames discussions all the time. like nobody else is part of them.

Shouldn't trump about now be claiming if he loses the 2024 presidential election the election was rigged against him? Gotta' start the Big Lie Part Deux sometime. Part 3. He was already on it in 2015 for the 2016 election. if you go back and look at the board from that time, there were MANY of us that worried that if he had LOST, he would have done exactly what he did in 2020/21. i believe you were one of them.

Trumps fourth quarter presidential campaign donations fell 20 percent from the 3rd quarter, according to Newsweek. Maybe his minions are afraid he’ll use that money to pay off e Jean Carroll. god forbid $83.3 million should come out of trump's own pocket. that is not how it works with Trump. he has been living on borrowed funds for decades. this is why the disembowlment is such a huge deal for him. it cuts his supply of much needed cash to finance his fake lifestyle.

Biden beats Trump by six points in the latest Quinnioiac survey. Jumps in suburban women and independents. Still, early February, plenty of time for Trump to get convicted of a few more crimes felonies prior to November. Convicted of a few more crimes. What crime has he been convicted of? you're right. fixed it for you.

uranium juniors were up a whopping 7% this week, as Uranium stayed over $100/lb for the third straight week. this entire sector looks 25% undervalued to me.
