www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43358247/ns/health-infectious_diseases/I've never heard of this stuff, but it sounds awful! I've worked several disasters in the past, but apparently this is rather rare, and doesn't show up right away, so early responders wouldn't see it. The article is somewhat vague as to how this infection gets going, but it's something I'm going to research a bit. I'd like to know if it's something that only happens to those who are severely injured, or if it's in the soil and can be contracted through any deep wound that isn't cleansed well enough. While it's reported to be rare, I'm led to wonder if it's only in the soil in certain places, or if it's rare because it generally only causes problems in those who are immuno-comprimised. It's a shame the people of Joplin can't seem to get to the point they can simply recover from all the misery they've suffered. Seems like every time I turn around I see something else popping up as a result of this storm. Those poor people!

I hadn't, either, toughtimes. As I'm reading, I find its other name is mucormycosis. I've heard of that, but don't know much about it. Looks like the fatality rate for those infected is about 50%. In those who contract rhinocerebral mucormycosis, the fatality rate is 85%. About 2/3 of those afflicted are males, but it's not known why. Very interesting reading, so far. If you're interested, there is plenty available by Googling for either name for the disease. I'd post links, but you'd probably rather pick and choose for yourself which sites you're interested in reading.

I can invision the tornado picking up human and animal waste as it moves across. Human waste from construction Porta-johns, animal waste from farms and feed lots, broiler houses all if making contact with an open wound can cause serious infections. Don't know what the type of infections are but you want to get an infection quickly just let an open cut make contact with pig waste and it will get bad quickly. It is one thing or another for these folks. Feel bad for them.

There's a lot of fun stuff that either gets stirred up, or grows in the hot, wet aftermath of storms like this. I've worked several hurricanes as a claims adjuster and it's just brutal-- I always wear a mask, especially when I have to go inside. I'm conscious of hand-to-face contact-- especially rubbing eyes, or touching my nose and mouth-- and I just DO NOT do it.

I read about this. Scary. Well, we all know these nasty fungi (sp?) are in our homes lurking. Makes sense that if it is stirred up we will get sick. I've always been a believer that it will be a virus, fungus, something natural like that, that takes down humans-- if anything ever does. We have Valley Fever here, and it can be devastating.. a fungus in the soil, can be airborne... which is why we have laws that construction people have to keep spraying down the dirt... it is so common here, and very bad. www.dlrrphoenix.org/vf.htmlPeople die, become blind, paralyzed, different things, but most show no symptoms at all. Fungus is scary. Dogs die easy, so do cats.

Yet another reason I don't clean house... But seriously, this is a real kick in the teeth for people already having such a tough time right now. Definitely have the community in our prayers.

Paul, I feel that we have a curse on us this year. New York has had several major blizzards that cost us a fortune followed by 100 degree temperatures in June (still Spring technically). St. Louis, MO, just had an earthquake on the New Madrid Fault. We've had all those floods across a half-dozen Southern States, tornadoes in the midwest, where will it end? If we don't make nice with Israel- it doesn't. As Jerusalem goes, so goes the world. You can trace the status of Jerusalem through world history and compare it to the conidtion of the rest of the world at the same time-- it's very interesting. God will bless those that bless Israel and the Jews, and curse those who curse Israel and the Jews. I recently joined www.ifcj.org because I am so alarmed and disgusted by the treatment of Israel and the Jews by the rest of the world, but sadly- by my own country.
