Why does the DoE need it's own police force? Isn't that why we have federal law enforcement?

Wouldn't have been a construction company in Gainesville Fl would it? No, it was a vending machine company in Nevada. They were taking money from investors claiming to be placing machines through out the country, the investors were to be paid from the profits from the machines, but in actuality they never placed any machines (or didn't place as many as claimed). They took the money and ran. It was an interesting business, the parking lot was full of high end cars, so they were raking in the money, but they all ended up going to jail.

Even so-- breaking the door down?? What's going on with these 6 AM raids and breaking doors down? And now this one, like the Guerenna one, we won't hear any more about due to pending litigation.. Is all this something new, or are we just hearing about it more, or what? No arrest was made here, and nothing of interest was found in the Guerenna home. I would think when they go in so heavy handed someone would leave in cuffs. Apparently Guerenna wouldn't have left in cuffs, either, had they not blown him away.. It's all creepy, if you ask me..

I guess it was the OIG--------------"OIG About Us Since its 1976 establishment, the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has been at the forefront of the Nation's efforts to fight waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicare, Medicaid and more than 300 other HHS programs.

According to reports,it was not just the wife under investigation, but both of them. Just my nature, until proven otherwise,I tend to side with law enforcement . Too many people in prison crying about their innocence and their rights being violated for them all to be,imo.....

Ugo-- I'm all for stopping fraud-- welfare abuse BURNS me up. But, you seriously think this is the right way to do it? Whatever happened to garnishing wages, taking tax returns, stuff like that? If gov't plans to break down doors and what.. lock people up??.. they will hardly be able to garnish them from jail. You telling me all the illegals in S. Tucson are going to get their doors knocked in for fraud? There sure will be a lot of shooting and dying.. MAYBE in this case the wife left and got all kinds of loans for school, whatever, applied as single when she is still legally married to this guy, or something. MAYBE she took the money and never enrolled in school. Maybe a million things, but this is not the way to collect. The guy is still liable for her debt, any way, if they are still legally married. I know a guy who was hounded by the IRS every year for his ex wife's student loans she never paid back. After a 7 year marriage, then a divorce they STILL hounded him. Finally left him alone because it was HER debt from before he even met her, but it was a real hassle for him. While they were married they took their tax refund every year, AND garnished her wages, not his. After the divorce she became disabled with MS, and could no longer work, and they continued to try to collect from my friend, but finally stopped when he got tired of it and got a lawyer to send them a letter. Geez, people, watch who you marry.. I'm glad no one in my house owes the gov't money. It would suk getting the door bashed in some morning at the crack of dawn.

From your own: UPDATE post #8 Update: The report has been revised to say that the agents was not a local SWAT team, but rather federal agents with the Office of the Inspector General, a “semi-independent branch of the U.S. Department of Education” that investigates things like student aid fraud. So please make up your mind, yes they are part of the OIG yest they are also semi-independant of the DoE

Yeah, ugo, if they are still married he too would be looked at. BUT-- they didn't arrest him. If they had this would not be news.

You are assuming it is over an unpaid loan. For all we know, it is a huge scam involving a lot more than one outstanding loan. They stated it is not a case of an unpaid loan. I agree there are cases of the overuse of force, but not being in their shoes, at this point,I am not calling a broken door the overuse of force.

You and the article say it is part of the DOE,I didn't. From what I have read on a quick search, they are in charge of fraud for medicaid, meduicare, and all HHS programs. If you see anything saying they are under the DOE, let us know.----"Office of Inspector General (OIG)|U.S. Department of State Welcome to the Web site of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the U.S. Department of State and the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG). This site is your best resource for information regarding the mission and activities of OIG, as well as the text and summaries of OIG reports and publications. OIG inspects each of the approximately 260 embassies, diplomatic posts, and international broadcasting installations throughout the world to determine whether policy goals are being achieved and whether the interests of the United States are being represented and advanced effectively. Additionally, OIG performs specialized security inspections and audits in support of the Department's mission to provide effective protection to our personnel, facilities, and sensitive intelligence information. OIG also audits Department and BBG operations and activities to ensure that they are as effective, efficient, and economical as possible. Finally, OIG investigates instances of fraud, waste, and mismanagement that may constitute either criminal wrongdoing or violation of Department and BBG regulations. Please contact us to report any allegations of fraud, waste, and mismanagement regarding the Department or the BBG. If you have general questions or comments about our Web site or our work, please contact the OIG webmaster. Harold W. I am assuming this raid happened because it involved something bigger than defaulting on student loans, but nonetheless, I'm kind of relieved me and SO aren't getting married until he gets his financial shit together. Eep.

Well, someone has to repay those student loans which were funded by MY tax dollars. If you want to avoid the trouble, just pay back your loans. Don't marry someone with outstanding student loans either if you do not want their crimes to affect you. And yes, not paying back your loans is a crime.

Excuse me, but there is no explanation about what it is for. Unless you found something I didn't see. Fraud could mean anything..

Quote: But Education Department Press Secretary Justin Hamilton said in a statement to The Lookout that the department "does not execute search warrants for late loan payments." He said the Office of the Inspector General "conducts about 30-35 search warrants a year on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds." Hamilton said the department cannot comment on this particular case until the investigation is over, but did add that the claim the warrant was executed for late loan payment is untrue. The raid was related to a criminal investigation of Wright's wife. news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout....loan-defaulters « Last Edit: Yesterday at 2:12pm by Marshabar »
