You may want to go make sure your federal government student loans are in good order right now. That’s because, as a Stockton, CA mean just learned, the federal government will bust down your door to get its money. Or even the door of your estranged spouse.

Kenneth Wright was home with his three children early Tuesday morning. He hadn’t even gotten dressed for the day yet, and was still in his boxers. That’s when he looked outside and got a surprise.

“I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers,” Wright told News10. Then, the SWAT team busted down his door, allegedly grabbed him by the neck and put him in a police car for six hours, and even roused his children (ages 3,7, and 11) out of bed.

But there’s just one problem. The police weren’t after Wright. They were after his estranged wife. Not surprisingly, they didn’t find her:



To add insult to injury, officers put a large, clunky board over the hole they created in the door and said it was fixed.

“The hole is the least of my worries,” Wright said.
Wright said he later went to the mayor and Stockton Police Department, but the City of Stockton had nothing to do with Wright’s search warrant.
The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the S.W.A.T for his wife’s defaulted student loans.
“They busted down my door for this,” Wright said. “It wasn’t even me.”
According to the Department of Education’s Office of the Inspector General, the case can’t be discussed publicly until it is closed, but a spokesperson did confirm that the department did issue the search warrant at Wright’s home.
The Office of the Inspector General has a law enforcement branch of federal agents that carry out search warrants and investigations.
Stockton Police Department said it was asked by federal agents to provide one officer and one patrol car just for a police presence when carrying out the search warrant.
Stockton police did not participate in breaking Wright’s door, handcuffing him, or searching his home.

I dunno. This is the bizzaro story of the day. The guy sure didn't seem to be scared of cops or anything on the video in the link. Even if there is some kind of fraud by his ex-- whoever heard of Dept. of Ed sending out SWAT teams?? Man-- they could bust a lot of welfare fraud in Tucson with that battering ram thing..

Update: The report has been revised to say that the agents was not a local SWAT team, but rather federal agents with the Office of the Inspector General, a “semi-independent branch of the U.S. Department of Education” that investigates things like student aid fraud.

This makes a little more sense. Who ever heard of SWAT getting sent for owing student loans. Why send SWAT when the govt will eventually get you anyway - with the ability to seize assets, take tax refunds, take SS, & take your licenses - the govt doesn't need SWAT.

But Education Department Press Secretary Justin Hamilton said in a statement to The Lookout that the department "does not execute search warrants for late loan payments." He said the Office of the Inspector General "conducts about 30-35 search warrants a year on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds." Hamilton said the department cannot comment on this particular case until the investigation is over, but did add that the claim the warrant was executed for late loan payment is untrue. The raid was related to a criminal investigation of Wright's wife.

This is crazy. Even if its fraud I don't understand why they couldn't have used normal search warrant procedures, knock on the door and then if refused entry break down the door.

I hope the guy gets a new door and a few bucks for the hassle.

A California man who initially claimed to a local television station that he was roughed up by "SWAT team" members who allegedly battered down his front door to execute a search warrant related to his estranged wife's unpaid student loans was targeted due to an ongoing probe into alleged financial aid fraud.

Local law enforcement officials have thus far not commented on the Stockton man's claim to ABC News 10/KXTV that he was grabbed by the neck and placed in handcuffs in back of a patrol car for six hours as his three children looked on during execution of the search warrant on Tuesday.

Public information officers for the Stockton Police Department and the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office did not return multiple messages seeking comment in connection to reports of the raid at a Jonathen Street residence occupied by Kenneth Wright, his estranged wife and three children.

In a statement to FoxNews.com, Education Department Press Secretary Justin Hamilton confirmed that its Office of Inspector General executed the warrant with the presence of local law enforcement authorities.

"While it was reported in local media that the search was related to a defaulted student loan, that is incorrect," the statement read. "This is related to a criminal investigation. The Inspector General's Office does not execute search warrants for late loan payments."

Hamilton declined to comment on the specifics of the case, citing an ongoing investigation.

"We can say that the OIG's office conducts about 30-35 search warrants a year on issues such as bribery, fraud, and embezzlement of federal student aid funds," the statement continued.

Hamilton referred all further inquiries to DOE's Office of Inspector General. Catherine Grant, OIG's spokeswoman, declined to provide a copy of the warrant served on Tuesday.

Wright, who could not be reached for comment on Wednesday, told ABC News 10/KXTV he does not have a criminal record and had no reason to believe what he thought was a SWAT team would be breaking down his door before dawn. But according to a federal search warrant provided to the station by Wright, the Wrights are being investigated for alleged financial aid fraud.

I bet if the guy had a gun in his home he would have been thrown in jail and those kids would have been taken away.

I've witnessed a raid of a business, it was interesting because a bunch of white vans pulled up along with the sheriffs department, secured the building, removed the people and started loading the vans with file cabinets and computers. They sealed up the doors with plywood and left.

The owners knew the raid was coming, I wonder if this guy knew that his house was going to be searched. It will be interesting to get more info if it is revealed.
