Think about the British model. They have the Queen to do the wreath laying and toasting. They have a Prime Minister to run the government. A difference would be that our "head of state" would by law have no executive power. Should we do something similar?
(maybe we could have an American Idol style vote for a non-executive head of state).

A grueling dance marathon would be better. Last couple standing become the "Head of State" and spouse.

Sounds expensive. In America we value working 80 hours a week, 50 weeks a year. We expect our President to do the same. He can do the work of 2 people, just like the rest of us.

But is the person who is a great Chief Executive Officer the best person to be the Non-Executive Head of State? Can the person making necessary cuts to FEMA be the person hugging the person left homeless by the flooding (who won't be getting federal assistance now)?

It can be, and it is. If we really accepted some stand-in, then we would just send the VP to all of this stuff. Which we do - but no one cares. The only way to get it on film is if the head honcho goes. We can't just appoint someone and force America to believe they are important.
Interestingly, I was really amazed at how little security the Queen had. I saw her by chance in London. At the end of the day, who will take her out? It wouldn't really accomplish too much. She is only important because of tradition. We don't have that tradition.
