Do parents get so immune to a stinky diaper that they can't tell that it needs to be changed?
Today I had PT and when I walked into the facility, there is a kid and daddy playing with the door. As I walked by, I got a nice whiff of diaper. I figured that that was the last of it.
Not so. I went into one of the rooms to change into shorts and I heard ear splitting screams coming from the treatment facility. I walk in and sure enough, kiddo and daddy were on one of the treatment tables, right next to where I"ve been assigned. Dirty diaper smell even stronger.....UGH!
I asked that we not do mat work first (it's not done on the floor, but on the tables) so we moved to the other end of the facility to use the pilates equipment. The smell wasn't quite as bad down there, but the screams continued. I guess after about 30 min (I was there for 2 hours today), they left.
Who brings their family with them to physical therapy? Why would you bring a toddler into a room where you have people in various stages of disability, working with equipment that could be dangerous? And why the hell didn't they change the shitty diaper?
ARGH!

I wish I could become immune.

I never could either. There were a couple of kids that used to go to DD's daycare that if one parent dropped them off they would be perfectly clean but the other refused to change a diaper. God help the kids if mom left early for work.

I wish. DD's usually such a noisy pooper that I am aware of it before it even gets a chance to stink. We got stuck with a dirty diaper couple once at the pumpkin patch. I kept sniffing DD's diaper thinking it was her because the smell was AWFUL and I could not figure out where it was coming from. I even discreetly sniffed DH thinking he had farted! It was someone with a two year old behind us who decided to change her kid right there on the floor. I had to grab DH otherwise he would have stepped right in it.

Hmmmpf! Men always get the blame. Only in these two cases. they happened to be the men that wouldn't change the diapers. My DH changed more than his fair share of them!

In this case, mom was tied up in PT and couldn't change the diaper. Couldn't the father get off his ass and change it?
However, come to think of it, I don't think I saw a diaper bag with them. Who the hell goes out without a diaper bag?

Mich I used to have a really small diaper bag. It was almost the size of those insulated lunch bags today. All it held was 2-3 diapers, a small wipe pack an extra onsie and maybe a bottle. I am not sure the bottle would have fit. Every once in a while I forgot it. We just prayed we got back in time.

I don't think I saw a diaper bag with them. Who the hell goes out without a diaper bag? Done it. Shit happens (pun intended). Have also forgotten to put the new size diapers in the bag and was left with diapers that were too small. Now I keep diapers in my purse instead of carrying around a diaper bag. Makes life a lot simpler.

Can't resist playing "devil's advocate" here, so to speak---what if the dad can't smell anything, including poopy pants?

Going back to a diaper bag was possibly in the top 5 for worst parts of having 2 kids 18 months apart. With DD, we'd moved on to a tote bag and then suddenly we needed the d#mn diaper bag again AND the tote. Thank God DS's stuff fits in the tote now. We're just about done with the diaper bag.

Presumably the mother could and she was being worked on on the table next to where the kid was playing.
Hell, I could smell it half a room away! I got hit in the face with it when I walked into the treatment room, and it got stronger the closer I got.
OK, they may have forgotten the diaper bag......how about them taking the kid OUT of the treatment room to remove the smell and screams?

Leaving for wherever they could would have been appropriate yes. I understand possibly not being able to leave entirely if dad was her ride, but he could have left the physical therapy room for somewhere within ear shot.

Drama....there was absolutely NO reason why that child needed to be in the treatment room. Mom could have driven to PT and come come, or dad could have driven her and gone home again. There are a multitude of restaurants in a 1 mile radius (including a Rotten Ronnies with a playroom) that they could have hung out and waited for the hour her treatment would have taken.

Who the hell goes out without a diaper bag? I did it once. I took DS to Christmas Eve Mass when he was about 18 months old. The smell was enough to knock you out. I left with him immediately to take him to my parents house to change him. And no, I wouldn't take my kids to PT.

I think my DH is immune, though I hope to the good Lord above he's never left her in a dirty diaper in public. He really doesn't have a good sense of smell in general. I can smell her dirty diapers immediately, and they get changed immediately. There is nothing worse than that stench, and why would someone subject others to it?

I have only gone without a diaper bag a few times, all occasions where DD had pooped just before we left, had a fresh diaper and we were only going to be gone for an hour or less. I certainly wouldn't make it a habit.

Just imagine what the future Mrs. Heff has to look forward to. I am sure she will get a nurses aide. But, it depends I'm a great gramma and I do not change diapers. After the first two grandkids, that was the end. Those two are in their mid-twenties now. I have diapers and wipes at my house. GGS2 came over and now is in training pants and NOOOO they could not put a diaper on him. With gas at $3.89 a gal. another short drive across town to buy them and then they came back. Maybe one of the docs could weigh in and tell us if we could get the flu or virus carried by the poopie kid just from the smell. In addition to the headache and stress. Sometimes I think parents do this just for spite.

I would always try to push the diaper changes off onto DW. BUT if I was the only one there and the diaper was dirty, then I would change it immediately. If DS and I went out alone I hated to carry the "bag" but I did it anyway.

We owned physical therapy clinics and children were not allowed period due to liability issues. I'm amazed they were not asked to leave. I realize there are stupid people out there but the clinic should have asked him to leave. No one should be subjected to the smell and the sound of a child unless it's a pediatrician's office.

Good grief! No wonder the baby was screaming! Can you imagine being helpless, covered with nastiness, and nobody cares enough to help you? Ewwwwww! Dammit, that makes me furious!

You needed a manly bag. I have a cute pink and khaki bag, but DH picked out his own. It's a gray and orange backpack-style diaper bag made by Columbia. Actually it's pretty handy. I end up taking it more than mine.

Was the mom deaf? Surely she could hear the toddler scream. If I'd been that mom I'd have been off that table so fast and in baby daddy's face. But the office staff should have asked him to leave. I blame them as well for being chicken shits.

oh look...I think we have a super hero to rescue you, Mich!!! and after the diaper is changed, if the kid is still screaming... because we all know there is absolutely no excuse for a melt down! it is possible that the sight of a grown man wearing a fanny pack and brandishing a wooden spoon could throw a kid in to a real melt down

I had 2 kids and thank GOD I was smart enough at the time to marry someone who knew how to change a diaper and when children were not in an appropriate venue. He was as smart as I was and I knew it as well.
