A friend threw a laptop at me and I'm about to ditch the desktop and humongous desk. Unfortunately,I have no way of transferring my pirated copy of Quickbooks. Do any of you have experience with the free double-entry accounting programs out there? I've heard that Quicken is cheap ($130) but even that is a bit out of my range at the moment.
I'm basically looking for a gloried check register. A fairly simple double-entry program will do the job. I have zero interest in downloading transactions from my bank. I prefer to make the entries by hand.

It may sound like a stupid idea but is there any way to use both for a while? I know you want the huge desk gone but is it really that big a burden? You could share files between the two. Still have the convenience of the laptop and just use a memory stick to transfer data. You could still use your old desktop for your quickbooks accounting.
This would at least get you through till you can afford something to replace it. Just my 2 cents.

I'm not very familiar with this but you might check out www.gnucash.org. It's freeware in the sense of linux, pgp, etc. Available in a Windows version. Screenshots look as good as the last version of Quicken that I personally used (which happens to have been a very long time ago; I use Excel and my own spreadsheets). I'm going to read more about it.
