On Sunday I wanted to buy a book for my Nook that I saw on the bookshelf in a local store for $7.99. B&N has it labeled as "New" and was charging $12.99 for it.
I could not figure out why I should pay a premium for the electronic version of the book. After all they do not have to print it, ship it, shelve it, or employ a sales clerk for me to purchase a book for my nook. I ended up going back to the store and purchasing the physical book. I was not going to pay $5.00 extra for it.
I have been purchasing all my books for my Nook from B&N b/c they is how it is set up. Can I buy from Amazon?
Thanks.

I don't think so - the way it was explained to me is Kindle = Amazon only, and Nook = B&N only. I may be wrong. Our local library "rents" out e-book downloads. You get to download it for like 2 weeks or something. One library is Kindle friendly and the other is Nook and E-Book friendly.

What I would do is get an iphone, android phone, ipad, or similar device. On those you can download the apps for nook, kindle, google books, and others, then you can shop anywhere because you have all the programs built into one device.

There was another thread where someone explained how to delete a book from your nook. I thought there might be some info in that thread about downloading something to your computer and then putting it on your Nook - that is why I thought I could possible do it.
I tried to use the search feature to find it, but I failed miserably.
I have a smart phone but the screen is waay to small for my eyes to read a book on. Eventually I will get myself something on the order of an I-Pad, but the nook is good for now...as long as I am not paying a premium for the novelty of downloading books to an electronic device.
I like to read current stuff, all my library has available for dowload is really old stuff.

You don't need iphone or android phone. You can root your Nook and have Android running on it. Then install Kindle on it

Basically it's a really quick way of turning your nook into an expensive paper weight if you don't know what you're doing. He's talking about modifying the device to the point where you have control of the operating system on the device and installing the Kindle application. I don't want to sound condescending, but I would say that if you didn't understand his comment your probably safer staying away from it.

Bean29, if you can get someone to root your Nook, that would be the best way.
Basically what it is, you install Android OS on your Nook and your Nook becomes pretty much like a tablet.

Have you tried it? You can resize the text to make it extremely large (far bigger than the font size in most books), so the size of the text shouldn't be too small for your eyes at all. Of course then you are having to flip the page every 15 seconds if you choose the largest test, so it has it's disadvantages too.
I read all the time on my android. I prefer kindle's format, but nook has far more free books available, so I go back & forth.

I have not tried to put a book on my Android Phone, but i have tried resizing the text when I am surfing the net. It does not work real well, as someone mentioned b/c not a lot fits on the screen. My DH has an EVO though, and I bet that phone would work fine for reading a book as the screen is slightly bigger.

Not sure if this is of interest, but the easiest and least risky way to do it would be to just install the Kindle app on your computer and read it from there. (I know, I know, way too oldfashioned ;D)

lurkyloo, I did buy a laptop, but it is way too big to slip in my purse on the way to the Dr. Office etc. The guy at the sprint store compared "rooting" my nook to jailbraking a phone and advised against it.
Maybe I will just keep thinking about it until I-Pad's competitors are set in the market and the prices drop. Then I should be able to read books on a tablet and buy from whomever I want and will probably force B&N to compete with Amazon's pricing.
The salesmen at the sprint store said the new blackberry tablet is really nice. My kid is on a first name basis with everyone who works at the sprint store b/c she has so many phone issues. He also told me last week that blackberry is much better for getting (work) e-mails on b/c they show up almost immediately while android phones pull e-mails down at periodic intervals.
Thanks for all your input.

bean, BB is good only in aspect that it's secure transmission. That's why gov uses blackberry. Besides, you will need to have BB Enterprise Server to get those "immediate" emails. I get my emails immediately too.. on my iphone and on droid phone. You can set iphone or droid to pull/push emails.' Don't listen to sprint guy. You will spend $500 on iPad when you can do same thing already on your Nook for FREE. It's really easy to do and it will transform your Nook into tablet PC Ask around, maybe someone who is savy can do it for you.

Indebt, Interesting about setting a regular Android phone to push/pull. I wouldn't think the sprint guy had a particular reason to push a blackberry over any other product they have in their store - after all they make money on all products they sell right? I get an occasional e-mail but nothing I am concerend about waiting 5 minutes to get. He is reading work e-mail. He said most companies that give their employees phones for reading e-mail provide a blackberry b/c it is truly better for said purpose. I know my brother's work phone is a blackberry and his company has a large sales staff all over the US. I figured my neighbor could root the nook for us. The is a tech person...DH does lots of favors for him so he owes us a few. I just need to wait a few weeks until it warms up here and everyone is outside more so we can casually ask if he can do this for us. My thing is though that I am not particularly concerned about making my nook act like a tablet. That is not why I bought it. I bought it so I could read books on it and mine is B&W not color. But if I could save some major $ by rooting my nook, I am willing to give it a try. Another interesting development is that Amazon is going to make their platform available to libraries, so if you can use both platforms, you might have more books available to "borrow" from the library for free. www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/business-tech/technology-news/110421/amazon-kindle-library-ebook-loansThanks again.

companies use BB because they can control them via BlackBerry Enterprise Server. That is the only real reason why companies use BB.
I didn't know you had B&W Nook. I am not sure about that one then. I seen color Nook rooted. It's pretty nice.
