Well - let's see...what is today? What did everyone in America need to do today?

I got lazy and filed an extension because I'm still sorting out some nonsense with 8606 forms for non-deductible IRA contributions. I'll let you know in a week or two what the final number is. (It'll be north of $20k.)

Between the 3 of us - I think we employed one federal employee!

Just under $4k to the Feds!!!! Total tax is ~4% of our earnings. Thanks to my Obama/making work pay credit and my Bush/Child tax credit and my Obama?/American Opportunity Credit (2 college kids), plus showing a loss for our business (I think our previous accountant really messed up on prior years), we got down pretty low.

I guess we are one of those people that you hear about on the news that are able to pay very little taxes. This year things just worked out for us.

That was my liability. I had $3190 withheld & recieved a refund of $3720.

In all honesty, I still haven't seen the folder we usually get from our CPA so I have no idea what our taxes looked like last year. I know we got a refund, and I know roughly how much it was, but I have no idea how much was deducted from my paychecks. I don't get a paper pay stub anymore, it's all electronic, and I don't log in to look at them. I'm not even totally sure I know what my base salary is right now. I've been super lax on keeping up with that stuff.

I think a lot of people don't pay enough - rich, middle, & lower-middle classes. I think it is ridiculous that I had a negative tax liability on an almost 60K salary. What is worse, is that I wasn't even able to claim the childcare credit because of my situation this past year. Had things been a little differnt, I would have had closer to -$1700. That is with a income too high to even qualifying for EITC.

I still had a refund. I've had income from a couple sources for the last few years, and it is has been hard to figure out exactly how to do it right.

I think I have everything right so that I'm not giving the government an interest free loan. Thanks to all the YMers for the insight!!

The only thing that stuck in my head is the 58k of losses/whatever that we are carrying forward on our personal tax return.

I think the current income tax system is a screwed up mess that is full of loopholes and we should go to a straight national sales tax instead. I'm not much of a consumer though, so I'd probably still be doing ok.

~$5k to Feds, $600 to state (This was after being employed in a state with income tax for only 3 months... the other 6 months was spent in a state w/o income tax).... this was after only being employed for 75% of the year and maxing out a 401k...

I would hate to see what it would have looked like if I had worked the full year.

Did I pay my share? On the fed level, I think I did (I am single and don't use many services... did use the natl parks this year, though . On the state level, I don't think I paid my share... I am at a state university for grad school so I think I got more than the $600 of value out of the state last year. My contribution will probably be even less this year, as I am unemployed and will probably only be working during the summer..

$4700 refund from feds, $900 from state. Loss from remodel of foreclosed office vs. selling price, plus many legal fees connected to the foreclosure due to dealing with the nutbag over and over in court.

I think you are right, a national sales tax like the Fairtax would be far better than the monstrous tax code we have now. And if you are frugal you pay little or no federal taxes.
